Darkness

Emma POV:

"Devon let's go. Do you have my bag ready?" I giggled from the hospital bed as he peeked his head out of the bathroom to glare at me.

"Would you calm down, you know they haven't even gotten us the papers to sign yet. It's not like me rushing will make us leave faster." I groaned at his words and shifted a bit, trying to get more comfortable. He was probably right and I knew I could fit a short nap in before then. "Besides," he continued. "You put stuff like, everywhere. Why did you even need a hair straightener? You're in the hospital."

"For something trivial, and that was my baby bag, you know that. It was packed for a trip to have a baby, not for dehydration." He rolled his eyes at me before continuing to pack everything back into the backpack.

"Emma why would you need to have a hair straightener to have a baby?"

"For the post birth, baby pictures duh." He just shook his head and kept himself busy tidying up the room. I let my eyes flutter shut and relax for a few minutes, praying the nurse would be in soon to let me go home. At thirty two weeks along it was a bit disorienting to be in the hospital and not be leaving with a newborn, but I was happy my little one was staying in me a bit longer. I wanted this precious second chance to have the best start possible for their life. I wanted to meet them so so so badly but I knew the next two months would fly by. And if I were being honest, my world wasn't ready for a baby yet. I had a crib, and some clothes, and some diapers. But that was it. There wasn't even stability in my life right now.

The thoughts overwhelmed me with how just unprepared I was, but I let them wash away with calm breathing and letting sleep come over me. The baby was coming whether I was ready or not. Stressing wouldn't help that.

I had just fallen asleep when Devon's voice broke though the fog.

"Emma wake up. Wake up right now."

"What Devon? Is the nurse letting us go home?" I opened my eyes to see his panicked face and any jokes fell aside. A tear slipped down his cheek and he gripped the end of my bed with white knuckles. "What's going on?"

"Lilie was hit by a car this morning. She's gone." The breath dropped from my lungs. My best friend. Finally someone I trusted and cared for, was gone. I looked at him in shock as rage filled me.

"What happened? Who did this?" My voice shook with anger and fear. Tears fell from my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. My heart ached in my chest. Devon breathed out slowly before walking around the edge of the bed and kneeling on the floor next to me. He reached for my hand and rubbed his eyes for a moment before looking up at me.

"Emma I don't know how to tell you this. It was Wyatt driving the car that killed Lilie. " I couldn't breathe.

"She was walking on the road up in the mountains and he was driving way too fast." I shook my head.

"He flipped his car but was okay after the accident." It couldn't be.

"He left her there Emma. He walked away and left her there to die." It couldn't be him. It couldn't be her.

"He was wanted for a hit and run and reckless driving." Someone made a mistake.

"But they found him shortly after, he had jumped off the cliff right across from the accident." No.

"He didn't die." No.

"He's here in this hospital Emma." No.

"If you need to, we can go see him." No.

"Emma?" No.

"Hey hey, breathe. Look at me Emma. Are you okay?" No.

The last thing I hear before the world fades to black, is Devon screaming my name and the monitor's alarms echoing into silence.
