4: A Fight To Remember

The soft chirps of birds and the warm sun helped me stir out of bed.

My head throbbed, as if I'd hit something constantly while I slept. Shaking the mild headache off, I tried to remember what happened last night.

The party instantly replayed in my mind, along with all the filthy words that spewed out of my mouth, Noah beating up a few jocks, and Ear Biting for Dummies by Lexi...as well as that mysterious fellow.

Sneaky little bastard. I mentally grunted, feeling somewhat abandoned as I remembered how quickly he had vanished. I didn't even have time to register the fact that he was gone, not to mention scold at him for it.

I distinctly remembered 'visiting' the police department's holding cells, and being rescued by none other than the handsome Mr Kensington.

After that, we had a few drinks – which would explain the splitting headache I'd currently been experiencing – and, abracadabra, I was here...wherever here is.

I opened my eyes, rubbing them excessively. As I moved my hands away from my eyes, I noticed the chestnut-coloured ceiling, which I'd seen a million times before.

A figure shifted beside me, letting out a stifled groan.

My entire body tensed as the figure shifted again, letting out a muffled yawn.

Crap.

My mind kicked into overdrive, trying to figure out who the hell I had been in bed with.

From where I'd lay, I couldn't see this mysterious figure beside me. All I could see where his bare legs that crept out of the duvet, as well as his arms, which covered his head with the help of the light brown pillows.

Wait...I've seen those sexy legs and manly arms before...

The figure shifted once again, only this time, he turned around completely, his face finally deciding to show.

Noah stuffed his head into his pillow, his arms wrapped around it tightly.

Out of instinct, I shrieked as I rolled off his bed, landing with a hard and loud thud.

Well, that was stupid. My subconscious scolded.

Noah grunted, not seeming to want to wake up, not to mention help me up from the ground.

Letting out a sigh, I lifted myself off the ground. When I'd managed to stand upright without falling over, I glanced at Noah.

God, he was beautiful.

His perfectly sculpted body rest on the bed, with his grey, tight underwear carefully wrapped around his nether regions. Only the outline of his flawless posterior could be seen; if that wasn't a sexy behind, I don't know what was.

He happened to be lying on his front, his muscular back being the only thing to sort of wake me up. His eyebrows were scrunched, as if he was having an unsettling dream. His lips were pursed, and his eyes were shut tight, but you cannot imagine the pain I had to suffer to prevent myself from kissing him right then.

"Dan?" A voice called out. I turned around to find Lexi standing at the door, dressed in only her pink polka-dot silk nightgown. "Would you mind waking Noah up? We're going to be late."

I nodded, and she smiled, disappearing from the doorway.

Giving Noah one final glance, I strolled over to him and hoped that I'd be able to resist myself.

In all movies that somehow revolve around teenagers in high school, a classic card is constantly played...the fact that they all say, "You will, and I mean will be respected by the entire school if you end up in jail."

Just to notify you; this is a perfect example of pure bullshit.

In fact, I think the jocks despised us even more now that we managed to somehow get imprisoned before them.

 Wonderful.

As Noah, Lexi and I strolled onto the school grounds, not even a hint of respect was shown in the rueful glares of the infamous jocks, who would've pummeled me there and then if it hadn't been for Noah.

Ever since that little encounter last night, it seems as if the entire football team – excluding Noah – had already set their eyes on us and deemed our little group a target.

In simple English; we're gonna die.

"Forest," a distinctive voice called out from behind us. I cringed, knowing exactly who it was.

I turned around to see the jock I had sent covert but blatant cusses towards. His face was scrunched up in anger, the only expression I knew that could say 'I Googled what you said' without saying anything at all.

If my parents hadn't been gone on their business trip, I am positive that they would give me the lecture of all lectures for the words that spewed out of my mouth.

"You, me, football field, after school." He whispered, dipping his head and positioning it so close to mine that I could feel every breath he made through his clenched herbal-scented teeth. "Be there, or die."

I let out a shaky whimper, already terrified of what he would do to me, but even more worried about the distance between our faces.

Even though I couldn't be any less attracted to the meat bag in front of me, that didn't stop my body from shivering from his bodily heat.

As if my mind had sent some sort of message to the jock, he stood upright, glared at me, then turned around, trudging off to who knows where.

My lungs suddenly filled with air, as I'd just realized I'd been holding my breath since he'd uttered the word 'die'. In case you haven't noticed, I don't particularly indulge in the use of that word, nor do I promote it.

"You're not going, right?" Lexi asked eagerly. I simply stood there, not letting out a word. "Right?"

"Lexi, I kinda have to." I pointed out once I'd regained my ability to speak. "He didn't really give me much of a choice." She gawked at me.

"Since when is Dan Forest a guy who takes orders?" She inquired, seeming truly shocked.

"Since the gigantic jock threatened to kill me." I whispered crucially, hoping she understood just how much I valued my life.

"He's not actually going to kill you, Dan." Noah mentioned, smiling warmly. "He might act big and strong, but Rock Head would never do that."

In case you're wondering, Rock Head happened to be the name of the jock we'd just been talking about. And can you guess who came up with it?

Me.

I assumed I still had a worried look on my face, but that all disappeared too quickly when Noah placed his hand on my back comfortingly.

"You'll be fine." He told me. I smiled, nodding.

He'd always been good at convincing me.

My day had been the epitome of ugh.

During first period, my teacher gave us double homework, since he'd figured out that his oh-so perfect student – me – had landed in jail.

Second period, the teacher discussed the disadvantages of becoming a juvenile delinquent, freely using my situation as an example.

Third period, all my teacher did was whine on and on about how his kids suck.

And by fourth period, the entire student body had found out about the fight that would take place this afternoon, making me dread it even more.

And when lunch finally came around, my name was whispered through the hallways. Well, not my name specifically; rather 'the-guy-who-is-totally-getting-pummeled-by-Rock-Head'.

Although it wasn't as catchy as 'Dan', I'd have to live with it.

"You're worrying yourself," Noah chirped from beside me. I blinked myself back into reality, turning to face the handsome young ma.

A concerned look adorned his beautiful face, the worry gleaming in his eyes as well.

It's nice to know he cares.

"I am not worrying myself." I protested, crossing my arms over my chest as we strolled out of school.

"Yeah, and your name isn't Dan Forest." Noah retorted. I rolled my eyes, making my way to the bench Lex, Noah and I always sat at.

"It could be, or it couldn't," I replied, "but you'll never know, will you?"

"Actually, I do." Noah sat across from me, grinning proudly.

"Shut up." I huffed, placing my bag beside me.

Lexi rushed over to us, cradling three large bags of McDonald's and a tray of sodas with her.

"You're buying tomorrow," Lexi muttered, her recently-dyed carrot hair cascading over her left shoulder.

"My parents aren't coming back 'til next week," I mentioned, "and, uncharacteristically, I'm broke."

"It's hilarious that you think I believe you." Lexi replied, placing a bag of food, as well as a soda, in front of me. She did the same to Noah, then strolled around me and planted herself to the seat beside me. "Pretend to be a hobo to get that money, because I've been buying for the past week, and your shift starts tomorrow."

I grunted, reaching into the bag of vast opportunities and pulling out a burger, and a box of chips, along with two sealed packets of ketchup.

"I guess I have to get a job." I muttered, already digging into my food.

Lexi, Noah and I always eat like this. Every single day, to be exact.

As all the teachers know, the three of us – Lexi and I specifically – are probably the most unacknowledged pupils of the school, and since they've witnessed the torment we – specifically me – go through nearly everyday, one of us is allowed to leave school five minutes before lunch, buy food and dig in.

It wasn't the best arrangement out there – since the teachers could actually do something about the bullying, they just refuse to – but it was better than being pushed into a corner and have your lunch money taken from you.

Trust me, it's happened before.

"That would be ideal," Lexi muttered her agreement. "Or you could just call your parents like a normal child; I'm sure they'll understand."

I shrugged, sipping my delicious Crème Soda.

"Dan," Noah called out. I looked up, feeling a strip of lettuce hanging on my lip. "Who was that guy fighting on our side at the party?"

I sucked the lettuce in, remembering the mysterious boy's eyes as they sparkled in the dim light of the party.

"I have no idea," I replied, taking a bite out of my Cajun Deluxe burger. It was nearly as hot as Noah.

"Isn't he that guy from the locker room?" Lexi offered.

 Oh, right.

"Yeah, I think so." I agreed through a mouth full of food.

"Locker room?" Noah repeated, his eyebrows furrowed. I nodded.

"Yesterday, your ingenious peers trapped me in the locker room," I explained, "then I met that guy, who just happened to be showering, and after that, Lexi saved me. Happy ever after for everyone."

Mainly for me, due to the splendid fact that I got to stare at the mysterious boy's body for more than five seconds.

I finally finished my burger, throwing it into the large packet. Lifting the box of chips, I ate them all one by one as silence reigned over our little table.

It wasn't awkward in the slightest...more like comfortable.

After I'd finished my chips, the bell rang and the three of us trudged our way to class.

School ended way too quickly.

After what felt like five minutes, the entire student body raced out of the front doors, lifting their hands in joy.

It's only Tuesday; I don't know why they're getting all excited.

Sighing, I remained planted to my locker, waiting for Lexi and Noah to show up. I wouldn't allow myself to leave the school alone, since I knew I would run.

And when it comes to the jocks, running only makes it worse.

Noah strolled out of Chemistry, looking spiff and span. He must've spilled chemicals on his previous outfit, since he'd taken the liberty to change into a golf shirt and shorts.

Lexi followed after him, wearing the same clothes she'd worn before.

Unlike her brother, Lexi is highly skilled at not making a complete mess with chemicals.

"Are ya ready?" Noah inquired, smiling. I nodded.

"I don't know why you're stooping to their level, Dan." Lexi muttered, crossing her arms as she walked with us. I furrowed my brows. "All guys assume that fighting is a great way to win anyone over, whereas, it just makes everything a million times worse."

"I'm not trying to win anyone over, Lex," I replied, "I just don't want to be ripped apart by some gigantic steroid-pumping jock."

She shook her head disappointedly, strolling down towards the field beside Noah.

As we walked, I could see the small crowd around Rock-Head expand. Loud cheers were already emitting from the group of people, and I wasn't even there yet.

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

My heart pounded in my chest as my brain screamed at me, warning me about the consequences of what I was about to do.

We neared the group, and Rock-Head laid his eyes on me hungrily. And no, not the sexy type of hungry – Rock-Head is about as attractive as a sewage pipe – the 'I-am-going-to-destroy-you' type of hungry.

And if it hadn't been the latter, I had briefly considered the fact that he just might want to eat me.

Ew.

The cheers seemed to only grow louder, and by the time we reached the group of hormonal and sexually frustrated seniors, I could barely hear my own thoughts.

Great.

Somehow, I'd been pulled away from Noah and Lexi, and at the present moment, the crowd had decided to grab hold of me in all sorts of places, their main goal being to push me towards the centre of the square-shaped circle.

Or, as my mathematically-inclined father would say, 'squircle.'

By the time my overly-touched body reached Rock-Head, the cheers died down and he stood right in front of me, looking extremely intimidating.

From the way his shoulders stuck out, I could already tell that the infamous Rock-Head had taken the liberty of wearing shoulder pads, giving him an unfair advantage.

Of course, I could just blatantly point it out; the crowd would fearfully remain oblivious, and I'd look like the biggest joke on this side of America.

"Are ya ready, twerp?" Rock-Head grunted, his voice sounding forced.

Another advantage for him; he could draw crowds with his simple wording, while I made them disappear with my extended vocabulary.

 Wait...that's it!

"Would you care to define the loosely-used term?" I inquired regally, making sure my voice was dripped in pure witty sarcasm that only the minds of the highest order would understand.

A yawn emerged from the crowd, and I knew my plan was already working.

Rock-Head furrowed his brows at me.

 "What?" he groaned.

"That isn't the required answer, dear Sir." I replied matter-of-factly. I spotted a member of the crowd leaving, making his way out of the school.

One down, forty more to go.

"What I require of you," I continued, "is to briefly explain what –"

"Shut up!" Rock-Head shouted. "Let's just get this over with."

 Crackers.

He ran towards me, a menacing glare plastered onto his face. I jumped to the side, watching as he accidentally crashed into the crowd.

Almost instantly, they helped him up, and he set his sights on me once again. His enormous body dashed towards my frail one, forcing me to roll to the side.

Unfortunately, someone in the crowd thought it would be fun to push me right into Rock-Head's meaty chest.

The smell of garlic, dandruff and fresh sweat hit me like a cannonball. Cringing, I pulled away, and ended up tripping on a foot that just happened to appear out of nowhere.

God, I hate these people.

Rock-Head towered over me, a pure evil look of satisfaction twirling onto his fatty face.

"Prepare to –"

And just like that, a figure from the crowd leaped in, a firm fist high in the air. The strange person's fist immediately connected with Rock-Head's face.

Like a feather, Rock-Head dropped to the ground, and the mysterious figure had vanished as fast as he came.

Of course, the entire crowd was as shell-shocked as I was.

With the help of Lexi and Noah, I clambered to my feet, watching as the eyes of the crowd members darted from me to Rock-Head.

"Oh dear Lord..." I whispered, pointing at his nose.

Blood, as in blood, as in the red liquid that flows through your veins at this very second made its way down the area below Rock-Head's enormous nose.

If I haven't made it obvious enough, blood terrifies me to unbelievable lengths, hence the main reason I didn't want to fight.

That and the fact that the only thing I can physically hurt are flies, and I can't even do that without the help of a fly swatter.

Lexi's eyes widened, her hand instantly gripping my arm.

"Let's get out of here." She whispered. Noah nodded in agreement.

As if a fire had started, the entire crowd dispersed, leaving Rock-Head and a few jocks in the middle of the field.

"Who was that?" Noah asked. I shrugged as the memory of the strange figure replayed in my head. That sickening crunch blasted me back into reality.

"I don't know..." I whispered, "but he just saved my life."
