I parked in my usual spot, staring at the huge building in front of me.
School. Oh joy.
It's not like I didn't enjoy school or anything – trust me, I would've buried myself alive if it wasn't for my best friend – it's just the prospect of receiving my daily dose of bullying was rather daunting, as always.
Luckily, I'd avoided it this summer because my dad refused to let me go anywhere alone. It sucked, but it was better than having my balls crushed into powder.
Oh, where are my manners? I haven't even introduced myself yet.
I'm Dan Forest. In case you're wondering – no, I do not have green leaves for hair and twigs for arms. My oh-so-easy-to-tease last name has nothing to do with trees or nature or blah blah blah. My grandfather just decided he wanted to be different.
Idiot.
Back to me...um...honestly, there's nothing even remotely interesting to tell.
I'm your average eighteen-year-old gay dude.
Oh, that's right, I'm gay. Queer. A faggot, as many of my 'intelligent' classmates like to call me.
And no, I'm not interested in glitter or fairies or the idea of magic, in case you're wondering. I don't have the slightest clue as to why any presumably straight guy would assume all homosexuals love glitter. Like, no.
No.
I grunted, stepping out of my Audi TT – bought for me by my loving parents on my sixteenth birthday – slinging my bag onto my shoulder.
I kicked the door shut, locked the car and shoved the keys into my pockets as I leisurely began my short journey to hell.
In case you haven't noticed, I hate my school with every fibre of my being. Thankfully, I'm in my senior year, and I've only got to put up with incoherent Neanderthals called the Blue Devils football team for one more year.
Twelve months. Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred and sixty-five days.
Oh joy.
"Hey you, in the tutu!" A loud voice jeered. I rolled my eyes, not even bothering myself to turn around.
They must've thought their rhyming skills were rather impressive, but on the other hand, they just chose words that ended in the same letter.
Idiots.
I continued my already grim walk to the school, hoping the jocks wouldn't attempt to call me again.
"I'm talking to you Queerest!"
I grunted audibly, still not allowing myself to give them the satisfaction of my response.
Queerest – as many of the beefed-up athletes like to address me as – is a nifty combination of 'Forest' and 'Queer'. Sadly, they assumed they'd invented a new word.
Once again: idiots.
A hard object hit my back, and I tried my best to keep balanced.
Unfortunately, my balancing skills are as good as my 'try to act straight' skills.
I dropped to the ground, letting out a gasp.
Laughs erupted behind me, and a hand reached out for mine.
"Get up, Dan," A familiar voice instructed, already agitated.
I hopped onto my feet, quickly dusting myself off.
"You just got here and they're already treating you like crap," My best friend grunted, glaring at the jocks. They immediately turned around and rushed off. Luckily for me, they'd always been scared of her.
Which brings me to another introduction...
That's Lexi Kensington, the ravishing blond who had taken the title of my best friend since ninth grade.
She'd witnessed one of the many beatings I'd been given by the brainless footballers, and managed to chase them away with her sharp tongue and quick remarks.
We've been best friends ever since.
"They're idiots," I muttered as we linked arms, strolling into school together. "Plus, I have to congratulate them for actually remembering the first day of school." Lexi chuckled, her grayish-green eyes glowing.
"So, did anything particularly eventful happen during summer?" She asked, raising her naturally thin eyebrows.
Lexi had spent the summer visiting her unmentionably senile grandmother, who lived in Connecticut.
"Absolutely nothing." I muttered, letting out a sigh. "Well, unless you count the fact that Dad finally let me out of the house alone today."
"We should have a party," She chuckled. "But something super intimate, with tea and cake and popcorn."
"Who in their right mind would even come?" I inquired, shrugging. "In case you've forgotten, we've been deemed the social outcasts ever since the teenagers that walk these halls could calculate the value of pi."
Lexi sighed.
"I would come," She cheered. "Plus, all your stuffed animals would be invited too." I let out a hearty laugh, mainly because I was desperately hoping nobody heard about my stuffed animals.
Look, I know gay guys are supposed to be the epitome of confident, but that doesn't apply when your best friend is rambling about what's hidden in the back of your closet.
"They're inanimate, Lexi," I pointed out. "You know, you don't have to act like our unpopularity is a touchy subject." She let out another sigh.
"But it's senior year, Dan!" She replied, untangling her arm from mine. "We're supposed to leave a mark! Make everyone remember our names!"
"And how do you suppose we do that?"
She shrugged, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I don't know," She murmured. "But still. It's our last year here. We should commemorate it. Just like Olive Pendergast said, 'Not with a fizzle, but with a bang.'"
"That is still my favourite movie." I remarked. "The best part was when –"
"Stop trying to change the subject, Forest." Lexi barked, halting at her locker. "I'm serious about this."
"Why would I want to make everyone at this godforsaken hellhole remember me?" I inquired.
I just want to get out of here, not give them another reason to detest my existence.
"That's the point." She sighed, opening her locker. I did the same with mine, hoping I wouldn't find another vibrator inside.
Last year, the ingenious – note the sarcasm – group of jocks decided to surprise me with a little 'gift'. In a small box, with glitter sprinkled all over it, with a pink bow tied around the container. Inside was the horrifying sex toy, along with a note.
I still recall every single word to this day.
We hope this will help with your hormonal issues.
- The Football Team.
Yeah, they were that brave.
Although, their courage didn't make up for the fact that most of them probably wouldn't graduate high school. How sad.
My locker seemed surprisingly normal, except for the little box that stuck out like a sore thumb.
It was pink – I don't have the slightest clue as to why they still assume that pink is my favourite colour – with a purple bow around it.
"Look what I got," I muttered to Lexi. Her eyes widened as she peered into my locker.
"God, I hope it's not a vibrator." She whispered. I nodded, lifting the box. It was the size of my hand, which was rather big for a gift that the jocks had been so 'kind' to give me.
Sighing, I unwrapped the gift, opened up the box and found a gleaming silver card inside, along with a note.
"You've probably been lonely this summer," I read aloud, "but not anymore. Here's a gift card to Erotica Land for free porn. Welcome back, Forest!" Lexi grabbed the note from me, tore it into miniscule pieces, then snatched the box out of my hands.
"They're douchebags," She grunted, flinging the box over her shoulder. "Ignore it." I nodded, shrugging slightly.
I've been ignoring their horrid attempts to torture me for as long as I can remember. It gets rather strenuous, to be honest.
"Doesn't this classify as harassment?" I muttered, neatly organizing my locker.
I definitely needed to install some sort of security system into my locker. Somehow, those Neanderthals still manage to break in.
"Sorta," Lexi replied, rummaging through her locker. I furrowed my brows, pulling out a few books. "I know what you're thinking, but don't do it." I cocked en eyebrow in her direction.
"I'm aware that it's not the most intelligent plan I've come up with," I began, "but it's something. Sooner or later they're going to resort to physical torture. Again."
Lexi sighed, brushing a strand of loose hair behind her ear.
That meant she had an idea.
"I'll ask Noah to take care of them for you, okay?"
I nodded, flashing a small smile.
Noah is Lexi's unbelievably hot, impeccably straight brother. Thanks to him, my life at Arnold High has been a tad less painful than it would've been.
Noah's the captain of the football team, and since most of my tormentors are part of that accursed sports club, Noah asked them – nicely, I hope – to stop pushing me around.
Obviously, they did not heed their wise captain's advice, and one of them was sent to jail for hurting me in a way I'd rather not explain.
Then, they stopped bullying me. Well, physically anyway. The sending of their crude and perverted gifts continued...but I guess that was something I'd have to accept.
"What's up guys?" Noah greeted, seeming to come out of nowhere. He had an impossibly charming smile on his bright face, and I felt myself melt.
Yes, I have a crush on him...but my dreams of holding his hand will never come true, because he plays for the other team. The team that happened to be staring at female cheerleaders rather than actually playing the game.
I sighed, placing a smile on my face.
"Hello," I replied, suddenly sounding like a Leprechaun.
That was Noah's effect on me.
Lexi cocked an eyebrow at me, using her exceedingly surprising grip on facial expressions to tell me to 'calm the hell down'.
"Hey brother," She muttered, shutting her locker. I did the same, making sure to lock it afterwards. We began walking, looking like a tightly-knit trio, similar to the three musketeers.
I guess we were.
Ever since Lexi stuffed me under her wing, Noah and I have been close friends. While my unpopularity had been taken into consideration, Noah still decided to befriend me, and because of that I assume a few of the jocks were curious about his sexual orientation.
Just so you know – he's as straight as hell.
"We're having a party," Noah mentioned nonchalantly, running a hand through his dark blond hair. Lexi gawked at him as if he'd just told her that he was gay.
I wish he had.
"We?" Lexi repeated. "As in you and me? At our house? Where we live?" Noah nodded, probably already realizing the route this conversation was taking. "Did you get hit by a football before you got here? Or are you forgetting what happened last time we had a party?"
I cringed, recalling the memories of the party vividly.
Long story short; three windows were broken, five lamps were smashed, the fridge was flipped onto its side, the pool turned orange and Mr Kensington's car was in dire need of repairs.
It wasn't a pretty sight.
"Dad's cool with it," Noah countered, suddenly looking very proud of himself.
"You asked him after he woke up, didn't you?" Lexi moaned. Noah's triumphant look faded just as quickly as it came. "You know how dad is in the morning! If I asked him to quit school, he'd say yes."
"You're not quitting school, are you?" I inquired, just to make sure. She shook her head, glaring at her brother.
"You're calling it off." She sneered. "There's no way Dan and I are cleaning up after you again, especially if it's a party we didn't even want to go to."
Lexi should be a lawyer.
"I second that motion," I agreed, nodding my head. Noah rolled his eyes at me.
He looked so cute when he was agitated.
"You guys are total buzzkills." He grunted.
"But you adore us endlessly." I remarked, my grin resembling that of the Cheshire cat. Noah rolled his eyes again, letting out an irritated moan.
"Anyway, I hear there's another party coming up," Lexi chirped. "One of the jocks told me this morning."
"I think it's a setup." I muttered. The Kensington siblings gawked at me.
"Why would you think that?" Noah asked.
"In case you haven't noticed," I began, "your sister and I are the worst definitions of popular. Plus, it's happened before."
Back in tenth grade, Lexi had been invited to a party – by the jocks – and she decided to drag me along. It took a while for me to enter the car, but when we finally reached the address, we discovered that we'd been hoaxed.
We were only sure of it after the creepy old cat lady had chased us away from her lawn with a rolling pin.
Definitely not my best moment.
"I'll ask around." Noah suggested. I nodded, trying to stop myself from gazing into his enchanting eyes.
The bell rang, and the sounds in the hallway changed from hushed whispers to loud screams and rushed footsteps.
"See ya later guys." Noah said before leaving us.
My heart dropped.
Before I was aware of it, something – or someone – bumped into me, and I found myself getting closer and closer to the ground. Turning on my side, I plummeted to the ground, praying that I would fracture something so I wouldn't have to attend school.
I had no such luck.
Pain greeted my arm as it met the cold hard tiles, and I bit my lip to refrain from shrieking like a little girl.
"Dan, are you okay?" Lexi shouted. I nodded as she helped me up, looking around frantically for the possibly blind asshole that knocked into me.
"I'm fine," I reassured her, gripping my left arm tightly. "Let's get to class." She nodded, giving me a worried look as we began venturing down the hallway.
This isn't going to be a pleasant year.
