Chapter 1: the beginning
Being in a headquarter of the most wanted organisation of earth, isn't really the best thing to do. Especially not after Captain America pissed them of. Yet here I am, walking around past the countless villians in the building. The air is thin, it makes you think that you can hardly breath. Well, what do you ecpect of a building that's almost 100 feet under ground?
Don't worry, I'm not a villian. At least I hope so. I was captured by hydra, sent here and kept prison here. Now they're using me as a slave. Why did they kidnapp me, you might think. Well, because I'm a danger to them so they think that if they lock me up here, and use me as a slave for the other prisoners, I will be no danger anymore. They're right. I've been here for almost five years now. I didn't even have a small change of getting out of here. Not even if I use my powers.
Yes, powers. You read it right.
Around twenty years ago my parents used me as an experiment. They wanted to remake the serum they used on Captain America. They thought that the serum was ready, everything would turn out as they wanted. So they thought. Yet it had gone wrong. So here I am, not knowing what powers I have nor how to use them. Still wondering why my parents did what they did. I would never find out though, they're kind of dead.
Hydra thought I was dangerous. For some sort of reason they thought I would, well, find my powers and use them against them. They couldn't have been more wrong.
Anyway, today is a normal day here in the prisons of Hydra. Yes a few weeks ago, the helicarriers where shut down and yes the head of hydra was killed as did most of the agents, but what can stop them? Cut of one head, two more shall take its place, Right?
Hydra was furious, project insight would have been their greatest succes. The world would have been theirs. Yet Captain America stopped them. You might think that Captain would be smart enough to stay low for a few days, but he didn't. He just walked on the streets of New York like: hey people, I just pissed off the most evil organisation in the world yet here I am searching for my best friend Bucky who wanted to kill me. Well I can tell you, that wasn't the greatest plan he had done. 8 days after project insight was taken down, he had been kidnapped by hydra. So here he is, in the building.
You might think, how the hell does a girl who's taking care of the prisoners know so much? Well I will tell you my secret: being a nurse and all will help you hear things from the prisoners. Or you could just listen to the normal hydra agent cursing and abusing a hero. Always helps. The only down side of that is that, well, you might get kind of pissed at the Hydra agent for knocking your favorite hero down.
Don't get me wrong, I love to help the hero. The only thing is, after a few year of doing this job you start to hate them. The agents here hate me because I take care of their enemies. That's also why I have been abused numerous times. The real me, the funny, confident, honest and nice girl is long gone. Hidden behind the large walls in my heart. I act like I don't care, like I don't feel anything. Everyone here does. It's the only way you will be able to survive.
"Adams, they need you in room 18. Right now." A hydra agent said, I think his name was Stefan. Not quite sure though.
I nodded and walked towards the room. Who have they beaten up this time? Maybe it's Captain? I haven't seen him yet. They say that he's here. Maybe they don't want him to cure?
After a long trip in the dark musty hallways I finally arrived at Room 118. The door was still open so the prisoner will be attached to a chair. Plleeaaase let it be Captain.
I stepped into the room and came face to face with a well build blond man. Nope, no shield, no stars. Dammit.
"Who are you?" He struggled to breath and talk. They sure gave him a hard time. He slowly tilted his head to look at me. His piercing blue eyes soon met mine.
"Just a nurse, don't mind me." He was extremely handsome. Still, no Captain. Well what did I expect? To see him standing there in his whole costume, saluting at me and then taking of?
I took some bandages from my pocket along with some cloth and water. "Look at me." I demanded. He tilted his head up again.
"That doesn't look good." I whispered and scanned all kind of cuts on his face and arms.
"Go away." He growled and furrowed his eyebrows. He tried to get out of the chains that had him tied up to the chair. His arms were already heavy bruised because of the chains.
"Chill, I'm only taking care of your wounds and I will be gone." I huffed and got the stuff I needed.
"I don't want to be helped by Hydra. Go. Away." He growled again but this time I actually got scared of him.
"Do I look like a Hydra agent to you?" I shot back. It seemed to shut him up. I sighed and took care of his wounds. He was the worst I had ever seen, he had bruises, cuts, and even some broken bones here and there.
"What did you do?" I asked, concern written over my face. He might die because of these wounds. I can't remember Hydra being this violent against their prisoners.
"I stopped them from killing." He shot a glare at me, he definitelly didn't want to talk to me. Yet he spoke again.
"So if you're not an Agent, what are you doing here?"
"I'm a prisoner too. Only I get to take care of the other prisoners." I cleaned a cut that was on his jaw. He hissed in pain when I poured some alchohol on it.
"How do I know you're not lying?" The angry look on his face dissapeared to be replaced with one filled with exhaustion and sadness.
God, what did they do to you?
"You can't." One final time I looked at him before walking out of his room and closing the door. First rule of being here: don't get to attached to the prisoners. They will die eventually. All of them.
There is no escape. Not even the slightest chance of freedom. You know that when you're here, you will never see the sun again. Nor your friends, family even some nice stranger who lives in your neighbourhoud. No, you know you will die here.
The only thing is: I'm still here. Most of the time they kill you after 2 years. They will be fed up with you. I'm an exception for some reason. Maybe because they think I might me useful because of my "powers." Well I might just tell you one thing: I don't think I even have powers. So what's the point of still keeping me here?
I'd rather be dead or something else than being here. You have no idea how it is to live here. Everyday you get to take care of people whom you know only tried to save others. Yet they are locked up here to die a most painful dead. First I feared that death would come to me, now I fear that it will never come at all.
You get attached to the people. The prisoners. It hurts to know they will die. That they will no matter what they do, never get the future they deserve.
For all I know, every Hydra agent wants me dead. Except for two: the one who's keeping me here and Luke. Yes, Luke is a hydra agent but he is nice and.. well. He is the only one who has been looking out for me these years. You won't expect him to be an agent. He's more like the cute, handsome boy from the football team. And he's been taking risks all those years because he wanted to help me.
But he can't, I'm already dead. There's no way I will ever get out of this.
"Grace?!" Luke screamed. Soon I saw him walking around the corner. His brown hair was a mess.
"Yes? What's wrong?" Luke never talks to me when there are people around. It's to dangerous, when they find out we actually like each other, they will kill him.
"There's something wrong. Like terribly wrong. Like a disaster." He dragged me towards a closet.
"Tell me." We hid in the closet and started whispering.
"They've got a twin, locked up in room 2199. They've got powers. Like god-like powers. I don't think that they're even meant for Hydra, I haven't read anything about them." His brown eyes met mine. He was confused, scared and exhausted.
"What are you saying? That they aren't hydra?"
"Yes that's excactly what I'm saying. I think that another organisation has taken over here." He sighed and ran his hand through his hair.
"That's bad. Like very bad."
"That's excactly what I thought." He rested his head against the wall and closed his eyes.
"What did you hear about the twins?"
"One can do telekinese and the other has super speed. They said something like that it's not the age of hero's anymore but the age of miracles."
"Shit. They have something big planned, I can feel it."
"That's not even the worst part. They were talking about you, Grace." His eyes met mine again.
"What did they say?"
"They knew how to get your powers out. And they want to try it soon." His eyes filled with concern.
"Well they better get me fast 'cause right now I've only got one patient to look after." I huffed. Like I care that they're finally going to kill me.
"Grace it's not a joke. They're going to do things to you. Like terrible things and this time I can't do anything to help you. This is bad." He put his hands on my shoulders and stared deeply into my eyes.
"No it's good. They will find out that I'm useless. I will be free."
"They will kill you."
"I know." He stared into my eyes for a few seconds and then pulled me in for a hug.
"I don't want to lose you." His voice broke.
"I'm sorry Luke, but you will eventually." I hugged him back and closed my eyes. He was like a brother to me. He was actually the only reason why I'm not shooting myself now.
"Now what were you doing?" He manned up and let us out of the closet.
"I was looking for a first-aid kit. I forgot my own." It was actually pretty stupid, I'm a nurse after all.
"Lucky you, I always got mine with me." He handed me his and walked away.
"Thanks!" I screamed after him. Soon I arrived again at room 18. The man was still chained to the chair an was still struggling to get out of it.
"You know, if you stop doing that it might just hurt less."
"Well what do you suggest me to do?" He stopped for a moment and locked his blue eyes with my green ones.
"Give up, you're not getting out of here, you're only hurting yourself for nothing." I took out the bandage and wrapped it around a cut on his arm after I cleaned it.
"I can do this all day." He said firmly. It made me look back up at him again. If there's one thing That makes me like people, is that they never give up.
"What's your name?" I ignored my own rule of not getting close to people. Every damn time I know someone's name, I will start caring about them. I just didn't care anymore.
"Steven Rodgers." He tightened his huge muscles.
"I'm Grace." I smiled at him before continuing with my work.
"Did you know they're keeping Captain America here? I heart it from another prisoner, he said that he could get us out of here. That's actually what got him killed but.. You know, I kind of feel honoured but also sad that he's here. It makes me wonder if there's any hope for us. I just don't know where they're keeping him, otherwise maybe I could've helped him and maybe, just maybe gotten us out of here." I said. I used to be a talker. I would just keep on talking without stopping. Right now I couldn't stop myself.
"Then why do you tell him to stop trying to get out?" Steve smirked and looked up at me.
"You've got to me kidding me." I gasped. Suddenly the door of his cel swung open.
"Director, sir." I quickly staightened up and scooted away from the tall and powerful men who just came in. He was also the one who's keeping me here.
"Grace, my favorite prisoner." He smirked at me but then looked at Steve.
"I see you've met our hero. But I have to dissapoint you, your efforts to heal him will be for nothing. Get out." he motioned for me to leave. My heart became cold and started pumping as crazy. This fast? Are they already killing him now?!
"Director, you have to reconsider." I suggested hopelesly. I can't let him go when I just met him.
"Why? He has already cost me project Insight. Now if you'll excuse us-"
"Director, he might still be of use." I quickly added. Steve shot me a glance while Director's eyes went cold and walked over to me. Then he was towering over me, intimidating me.
"What did I tell you about disobeying orders?"
"Sir-" Then he hit me. Fast, hard and quickly. It knocked me to the floor and my cheeks burned of his touch.
"Don't forget the reason why you're still living." Director hissed and walked to Steve who was glaring at him.
"So then we will do it in her presence. Agent Wood, I will give you the pleasure." He stepped back for the Hydra agent.
"Yes sir." Wood took out his gun and aimed it at Steve's head.
"No!!" I yelled and pushed him away. Right now was a good moment to die. Especially if that means I get to save Captain. But I wasn't fast enough to hit the Director. He threw me against the wall.
"Fool, he will die. Whether you like it or not." he hissed at me and now aimed his gun at Captain America.
Before I knew what was happening, I threw my hand in the air, aiming at the Director. And then something happened nobody had ever expected.
