Chapter 23: Not yet

The white faded as Kaira was again met with the spirit jungle.

She sucked in a deep breath and let it out after a moment. She took her hair band off and tied her hair into a loop. It was loose as always and begging for a hair cut.

She had to steer clear of Daya. How could she? Kaira wondered painfully. After all that talk about getting justice for her mom. After saying all those nice things about her. After everything. Why?

It was all part of Daya's plan. Kaira was fooled.

She had been lied to too many times and it sucked.

Spirits stared at her as tracked through the jungle to the settlement.

When she made it there, the place was as calm as ever. Her heart rate picked up. Had Daya already taken them out?

"Kaira, back so soon! " Latik's voice called.

Kaira didn't say a thing. She stared at him, fear creeping up her face.

Latik became worried, he lowered the vine and slid down himself.

"What's wrong? " He asked.

"We need to go, where's Daya? "

"Daya, the keeper? She's not here, why? Do you need her? "

"She doesn't want you all here, we need to get them out–"

"We can't leave" Latik said, "we don't have anywhere else to go"

"If you don't leave, you'll all die, please, not again" Kaira pleaded. She wasn't going to let anyone else die, not on her count.

Latik looked at the child's fear ridden face, "ok, ok I'll tell everyone"

Latik signalled to the man on the tree house. He would lift him back up. Halfway through the lift, the man stopped. Latik glanced at the spot he was, only a second ago.

Something was up.

Kaira POV

Latik swang on the vine, throwing himself back and forth, until he reached high enough to get onto the platform. I couldn't see clearer from down here, but I could've sworn he flinched. He moved forward and kneeled on a knee. His head moves side to side, searching.

His guard was up. He turned to me and beckoned me forward.

I hesitated but grabbed the vine. Latik turned the wheel and up I went. This felt too strange to be ok. When I made it up, latik put a finger to his lips and nodded at me.

He handed me a spear, from I don't know where and walked forward with his own. I flinched out of my skin when I saw the man propped up against the wheel, his face pale and cold. Just like Jin.

I let out a breath and looked away, that's when she appeared. Data. I know, it just happened. I took a shaky step back.

Latik put his hand out before me, protectively.

"Kaira" Her voice as calm as ever. "Why are you back so soon, did you take care of Malaika?"

I trembled. I was scared out of my mind, after knowing what she did. How could she?

No words could leave my mouth. What was I to say?

Latik suddenly shifted his spear towards Daya. She tilted her head only the slightest.

"After everything we've done for you, this is how you repay us...!" Latik growled.

"Humans are disgusting creatures, only looking out for themselves, destroying everything in their path for comfort and luxury. Soft. Pathetic! " Daya sneered.

What she said, struck a nerve in me, "Says the person who's letting her own kind get killed"

"Humans always need power, they must always be the last on a food chain, they think they own everything"

"Latik, could you make sure if everyones ok? " I said, letting out a sigh. He stared at me in bewilderment as I saw from the corner of my eye.

"Please, I'll be ok" I added. He nodded a little too hesitantly, turned and ran for the houses.

My eyes narrowed and my heart thumped louder than my own voice, as I put my spear to her face. Calm down, I actually have a fair idea of  how to use a spear, because I spent a lot of time around Nico and Jin's dad.

I was the verge of crying or screaming.

"What do you think you're going to do with that? " She laughed.

"Protect my kind, spirits" The spear in my hand dove for her shoulder. No, I wasn't actually going to hurt her. As crazy as it sounds, no way was I hurting anyone.

She hopped back onto a branch swiftly avoiding my attack.

I lost focus for a second and she was gone. I shifted my self around, turning my head. Not a trace.

Then I was hit with an immence force from behind that knocked me forward like a boulder. My body ached everywhere, but I wasn't going to give up so easily.

I picked myself and my spear up, and stood strong.

"You scared? " I mocked, grinning.

The wind whistled among the trees. Critter noises went quiet. It was calm.

"I won't fall for your cheap tricks, child! " Her voice echoed throughout. But she was close. Too close actually. Behind me.

I swung myself and my spear around. I wasn't sure if it cut anything. But it touched something.

I turned and she appeared before me again, her hood torn only the slightest at its edge.

"Humans do not deserve to live in this world" She said.

"We're not all bad and you're not all good either"

I aimed my spear at her cheek. She grabbed hold of it and back flipped pulling me along and back onto the hard floor board. I so need to gain a few more pounds.

I was being beaten to a pulp.

"This fight is over" Daya said, and her hand went in the air and towards the houses. Insect noises started around us. Bees. Or at least it sounded like it.

No.

A herd was seen a yard away. They followed the direction of Daya's hand. The sound got louder and louder untill it was deafening. But my heart beat was louder. My feet moved on their own and I was already before Daya's hand. My hands out beside me.

"You're going to need to go through me to get to them! " I growled.

Daya said nothing. And the spirits came on command. They rushed forward.

I wasn't on anyone's side. I'm supposed to be the bridge. I keep them connected. I'm supposed to be strong and steady, ever ready during whatever weight. I'm between, never for, nor against, if I've learnt anything from all this.

"Raava, is that you? "

My right eye pried open to the sight of the swarm of spirits.

What now?

"What are you doing, take her out! " Daya yelled.

The small red creature edged closer to my face. But I wasn't scared.

"It is you? " The spirit said.

"Does this mean, you won't destroy this little village place or...? " I asked.

"If you wish to-"

My hands waved about in dismissal, "No no, not at all, thanks" They seemed to understand as they started to leave.

Latik grunted, "Don't be so sure of yourself avatar, you think I had to force the spirits in the human world to fight? not at all. They did it on their own free will"

"That's because you lied to them"

"They killed because your kind killed"

Something ticked in me. It was like a light switch. I  went off and something else came on. Something more dangerous. Anger.

The spear was flying from my hand towards her face. It was fast, fast enough to cut through the hood and through her skin, or whatever it was.

My left foot moved back, and my hands came up to my chest in defense.

"I'm sorry I hurt you but you've hurt too many people"

A moment passed before her eerie snickering echoed around us.

"You must be dying to see my face, aren't you? "

I kept my stance and silence.

Her fingers grabbed onto her hood lightly and pulled it up and over.

My breath hitched in my throat. I felt weak. I felt sick. I felt like falling.

Mom. Her face was ruined. Her face hardly a face. An eye was gone, her lips were blue, and thin, her nose was twisted and bruised too badly. Her long hair was replaced with a bald head, with a large scar. A fresh cut on her cheek.

I found out at a young age that dreams didn't come true, when I wished too hard for mom to come back. Some dreams do, some dont, some are nightmares you wished never would.

"Kaira it's me" Mom's voice called out. My chest heaved with anger and sadness all mixed together in one.

"How dare you?! " My feet moved on its own, my hand grabbed hold of a stick on the floor, and I'm racing towards her. Of course I couldn't do it, I could never. I stopped a feet away and dropped the stick.

"You're weak, like every other human" Daya said.

A piercing sound rushed past my ear and onwards, when I looked up I would see an arrow stuck to Daya's shoulder.

Immediately after that a bright light exploded around us. A pillar of light so bright it was blinding.

Third POV

"Where are they?! " Kiva yelled.

Mun sealed his lips together and looked ahead.

"Those spirits don't deserve to die! " Kiva yelled even louder.

"Says you" Mun grunted.

"What? " Kiva flinched, and looked his way.

Mun's lips pull into a tight grin. So scary it could scare a baby, "why are you protecting them? "

Lee looked up from his leaning position against the wall. He wasn't the type to interrogate and force information out of someone.

"Because it's the right thing to do"

"You know Kiva, we're pretty similar"

"I am nothing like you" Kiva sneered.

"You lost someone precious to you, as did I"

Kiva's jaw tightened, and his fist folded ready to swing.

"My wife was murdered by a spirit...."

Kiva stared at him, waiting for him to continue.

"And so was yours! " He said.

Bam! Went Mun's jaw.

"I figured" Kiva scowled,"but that doesn't change anything. My daughter has some sort of light spirit in her, and she sure would never hurt a spirit fly for anyone. They're not all bad"
