"Grangran, you okay?" I asked, concerned.

She broke out of her trance, smiled and nodded up at me almost unsurely.

I muttered an excuse me and went to the door to welcome dad. He froze in his spot when he saw me, eyes wide.

I raised a brow at him, only for him to sigh, pat my head and walk past me into the house. I shrugged and followed after him to the kitchen, where I lit the stove to heat the pot of tea.

As I was walking back to the dinning area I heard whispering.

With a sly grin on my face I hid behind the wall and listened in on their conversation.

"Why didnt you tell her?!" Gran, whisper-shouted.

"She doesn't need to know" Dad replied strongly. Whoa, what is going on?

"Who doesn't need to know what? " I asked, coming out of hiding, startling them in the process.

Dad was quick to answer. "Uhhh nothing, honey, your grangran here was just talking about her cousin" What? Grangran has cousins who are still alive?

"Grangrans cousin huh? " I questioned as I glanced at Gran, who nodded hesitantly and kept quiet.

"Yeah, she's sick and we don't want her to know, yeah hehe" Dad said as if he wasn't sure of himself. I knew dad was lying, I could feel it in my bones. But since I figured it was none of my business I didn't question him any further.

"Uh ok, the teas on the stove, so it's gonna take a while" I muttered as I lowered myself onto the the chair, only for grangran to stop me.

"Kai, darling, why don't you go out for a walk, it's been awhile since you've been in town" Grangran insisted walking me to the door. I saw what they were getting at. They so don't want me around. Those suckers.

But grangrans right it has been a while. I guess I'll go to the dock. I know I'm oblivious to all this mystery, but I just didn't feel the detective in me then.

"I guess I could do that" I said as I narrowed my eyes at them and walked backwards out the door."But I shall be back! " I announced, dramatically.

I strolled down the street, taking my jolly good time. By the way, It was freaking hot outside. Everyone I passed looked like they were about to fall over like a dehydrated puppy.

I couldnt help but notice a group of 6 kids lying under a tree, of a small field. They looked like they had passed out from playing too much in the hot sun.

"I wish it would snow right now" I heard one of the girls said wishfully .

"Me too!" Another agreed with great enthusiasm.

"Me three!" A boy said.

"Me five!, oh wait four" Another said, his face scrunching in thought.

"It's never gonna snow in this part of the earth kingdom" The other replied.

"Oh stop your whining all of you, just shush so it won't be too hot! " Someone said, probably the leader of their little gang, shutting them up for good.

Just then I got an idea.

"Hey! " I called out as I stalked towards them. They turned to me with scowls perched brows.

"Who are you?" A pony tailed boy asked.

"Uhh hi I'm Kai, you guys wanna see something cool" I said scratching my head. This was unplanned.

They turned around and huddled together, whispering among themselves, even though I could hear every single word they were saying.

"Does anyone know who this girl is? " The leader asked.

"I saw her going into old lady Ryus house, she must be the granddaughter "

"So, what does she want from us?"

"Guys I'm bored, just let her show us her trick please" One of them pleaded.

"Yeah, look at her she could never take us out"
Why would I take them out?

They nod heads and turned back to me.

"Ok then" The leader said to me, still suspiciously. I never thought I was that suspicious.

"Close your eyes. And no peeking"

They closed there eyes obediently and waited. I stretched my hands out beside me carefully pulling the water vapour from the air and pooling it into a big blob of water above their heads. My hands shifted in the air, turning the water into ice, I shifted again and the ice crunched and fell.

They opened their eyes to the cold. And awwed at the snow.

"See Ping, my wish did come true! " The small girl  said poking her tounge at the leader kid.

They put there hands out to collect the snow as more fell, and ran around in the snow happily. They fell on to it, making snow angles. I did bend a hefty amount of snow.

"Youre a waterbender" The leader said to me, when he caught me smiling like a creep.

"I guess I am" I said.

"But aren't you old Ryu's granddaughter, how come you're a waterbender?" Another piped up.

"My mom was a waterbender" I said with a sad smile.

"How's life at the poles?" Another asked.

"Can't remember. I was only born there, we moved to the earth kingdom, when I was 3" Kids sure are curious...

"Can we see one more trick please"  A small little voice said. It came from the youngest of them all.

"Sure"

I gathered some water vapour arouund his head and froze his hair, frosty. They laughed and cheered. I wasn't the most responsible baby sister but I knew just as much that a child's smile was a treasure, as precious as a gemstone.

The show was over and I decided it was time to leave.

"Hey, where are you going? " Ping, the leader shouted after me.

I shrugged, "Anywhere, maybe the dock"

"We're going to get noodles, wanna come?"

Eating noodles with a bunch of ten year olds. That's cool too. Cue the awkward shrug.

"Thanks I'd love to join"

The noodles place was actually Nini's moms house. Nini being little girl who asked for snow. Lucky for us it was across the street from the field.

Nini opened the door and we all stepped in after her. Yes yes I know "what is this 15 year old girl doing with a bunch of kids? " well I don't know either.

"MOM WE'RE HOME! " Nini screamed out to her mom who was in the kitchen, stiring something by the stove.

"Welcome back kids" Nini's mom smiled widely taking a careful glance at each one of us, including me, "oh and who's this? "

"This is Kai, she's a waterbender and she wants to eat noodles with us" Nini said, nonchalantly, picking her nose.

Nini's moms eyes widen when she heard Nini call my name. Surprisingly she walked over to me and pulled me into a hug.

"Oh my, you've grown so much" I was dumbfounded."You probably don't remember me, I'm a friend of your dads" And then it hit me.

"AUNTY VIRRA!!" I exclaimed, pulling her into a hug. Old memories of aunt virra and hot dumplings resurfaced.

We sat around the table, slurping up noodles and spitting out stories and jokes like a long lost family.

After our little reunion I hugged and said goodbye to the kids and aunt Vira. They said we could hang out tomorrow.

As I promised myself earlier, I decided my trip to the docks could still work out. Luckily I remembered all the directions, I tried to memorize while we drove past it. The sun was near the horizon.

I sat on the cold, wet floor boards and closed my eyes to the orange sky, my eyes falling close.

A loud rough sound rung in the air. Why is there an engine in bedroom? And why is my bed so stiff and hard against my back...

And then I felt a hand on my wrist. Adrenaline rushed through me as I water whipped the person into the water, half asleep. I wasn't the kinda person who practiced self defense but stuff like this kinda just came out of me.

The person was in the water, splashing trying to swim to shore. I froze the water's surface, trapping him or her in the water. I walked over to the edge and there he was, twisting and turning in the water. It was pretty dark outside, but the light from the street lights illuminated his figure.

"Hey you! What was that for?!" He yelled, still splashy uncontrollably.

"You really shouldnt touch strangers" I said.

"I thought you were dead!, why were even sleeping on the dock?!"

His reason was valid enough to make me feel stupid.

"Heh, Sorry...?" I grinned, rubbing the back of my neck. I then realized he was still in the water and bended him out with a whirlpool of water.

"Whoa what the! " He exclaimed once I'd sat him down, "You're a waterbender?"

I couldn't see him cleary before, but now I could. He wore a red and black uniform thing. And had a short haircut. All in all he looked about my age actually.

"Yeah, I am" I frowned at his soaked figure, pushing my hand forward, also pushing away the water.

"Wait, I'm still mad at you! " He scowled, realizing after a second.

I groaned, "Didn't I already pull you out and dry you off, can I go now? "

"No!"

"Uhhg, Why?"

"Because I said so"

"Fine what do you want, I am your humble servant" I bowed groggily.

"First off all I want you to take me to the nearest inn, from here"

"Inn" I repeated to myself. What? It had been a while since I've been in town. But I did remember. "Yeah. let us leave.... ?"

I waited for him to give me his name only for him to stare at me blankly. "Who exactly are you?" I asked.

"Rich of you to finally ask that, I'm General lee of the fire Nation" He announced visibly annoyed by me.

"I'm the Great Kaira, of the earth kingdom. I once saved the whole world from an evil old lady!" I said putting up my hand for a high five. He scowled so hard I feared his face would stay like that for good.
"No? " I moved my hand down for a shake, but he still didn't take it.

"Arent you a little too young to be a general" I asked.

"Aren't you a little too young to be sleeping outside on the docks" He replied sarcastically.

I was defeated."Good, good point"

Some time on the road later I decided to ask. "Hey so what's a big fancy fire Nation general doing in this little town?"

To which he replied with a stoic expression. "I'm not gonna stay here for long"
