Chapter 16 Pt 1: The Battle (Third POV)
Avatar Kaira, just straight up disappeared while the everyone else was trying to deal with protecting the city.
Jin, Nico and Chiyo's voice echoed into nothing. Once Kaira was fully gone the spirits shot out tree faster than dumpling could trample anyone.
One shot right at Oppa. The spirit resembled a wolf, but larger, he sprung at Oppa dropping him to the ground. However Oppa was a skilled officer who had trained day and night for his job. He got to his feet, bended all the water in the air he could and circled the wolf spirit with it, creating a big ball of water. He wasn't trying to use the water bending method that calmed down evil spirits, he'd already tried that before and the results weren't pleasant. The spirit broke from the ball of water, growled at the water bender and stared back at him with eyes ready to kill. Again Oppa bended the water and shot at the spirit and their fight continued.
The man each fought with the spirits, it was an equal match, no one had won yet.
A small green bush–like spirit stood before Jin, it's thin eyes blank.
"You don't wanna hurt me, do you? " Jin gulped, "we could be friends, hi I'm Ji–" Before he could finish the spirit was already chewing at his toes. Jin yelped and ran back and forth, as everyone else fought for dear life.
Spirit after spirit flew at Nico only to be knocked back with her air bending and a wave of her staff. Then out of the blue came running a monkey spirit, he was quick and agile, jumping onto Nico's shoulders, turning in the air and kicking her from the back, resulting in her falling face first to the earth. While she lay there, grunting, the spirit made a few ooh ahh sounds while beating its chest in joy.
Chiyo was–well she was kicking butt. Spirits flew here and there with every earthbending method she had mastered since she was twelve. She bended a boulder, threw it at an attacking spirit, which also somehow hit another officer in battle. She cringed."sorry" And that's when Jin just so happened to have freed his toe from the bush spirit and bump into her, knocking both of them to the ground.
"Leave it to Jin to knock people over during a very life threatening battle", Chiyo groaned.
"Move back!! I said Move Back!!! " Oppa yelled at the top of his lungs, "We need to protect the citizens!! "
And just like that everyone dropped there fights and ran for the Vans. Chiyo picked up Jin, and they ran, along the way dragging Nico with. They made it to a van dropped onto the seats like flies and watched from the closing doors as the spirits ran after them.
"They're not evil?! " Nico yelled at Chief Oppa.
"When did I ever say they were" He said. Face blank and calm.
"I thought waterbenders could just use their technique–thing and stop all of this! " She said her voice dropping slightly.
"These things, they aren't evil. They're angry"
"Then why can't we just talk to them? " Chiyo inquiried.
"We did" Oppa said, "she told us, this was their will untill the portals open again"
"Where did Kaira go? " Jin asked.
"I wouldn't know. I've never seen this happen before" Oppa's face twisted in confusion.
"She's ok right? " Chiyo asked.
"Yeah... She has to be" Oppa answered, but he didn't sound so sure of him self either.

3 hours earlier
Lee had been summoned to the Oppa's office when they arrived at the police station. He had dropped Jin, Nico and Chiyo at the armory with another officer before he made it to Oppa's office.
"You summoned me sir" Lee said, head straight, eyes foward, stance as still as a statue.
"Lee I-" He cleared his throat "-you need to know something"
"Yes sir? " He answered relaxing a bit.
"Mako... He hasn't made it back yet" Oppa said.
Lee felt his heart drop. "What? " He said, unsure of himself.
"We thought he would be back. He said he would. But it's been at least 24 hours since the battle. We don't think he–"
"This is your fault" Lee said, his voice cold as ice.
"Hey hey hey! No! He wanted to go. He could go and he was the only one who could enter the portal."
"If you hadn't have sent him out he wouldn't be... " Lee's voice cracked at the end.
"We still don't know if he's alive, he told us to stay claim, so be calm"
Lee stared into his eyes. He was angry. He couldn't wait to get out of here, he couldn't wait for Oppa to get out of his sight. So he nodded, and turned for the door.
This wasn't what was planned and he knew it.
Two hours later the sun was setting. He was at the Portal Vines, waiting patiently for any sign of life. Nothing. Complete silence. Untill an ear piercing scream of a women.
He tried the best he could to ignore it and keep his eyes on the vines. If any thing would walk out of those vines. But he knew, he was trained for this all his life, to save people. He ran to the scream. Out of the Vine overgrown area and to the buildings beyond. Once he made it to the buildings he looked back and forth between them, for the women. And there she was standing in the street, a big blue bear–like spirit rushing towards her, it's claws out and ready to strike.
"Someone help!!! " She screamed, pushing lee to a run towards her.
"Stop this I don't want to hurt you! " Lee yelled when he was within six feet of the spirit.
The spirit heaved an angry breath and turned to the incoming Lee. Lee threw his first blast of fire at it. It dropped to its paws and scrambled to the side.
"You humans think that we want to do this..." It said. The spirit said.
The women screamed when it started growing larger in size.
Lee gulped and watched it grow. It's eyes we're now black and it's claws were as large as knives. It lunged for Lee, but Lee was swift he took a calm step aside just in time for the spirit to attack. It flung foward, growled and turned back at Lee.
"Go" Lee said to the women, his back turned to her. Scared for her life, she ran down the road.
He punched flamed fist at the spirit. But it was no use it dodged every hit, it knew that if it came in contact with Lee's flames, it would be a goner. Lee kicked a ball of fire at him, to the hurdling spirit but it side tracked and moved out of the way again.
"We don't have to fight" Lee said, slightly out of breath. It took it as his chance to head straight for lee, swinging his huge claws at him, throwing lee against the building.
"But we do, this is all your fault. Your avatar's fault. She shouldn't have played with the portals" It growled back angrier than ever.
"What are you talking... Kaira didn't do this–" Lee coughed out, standing on shaky feet.
Before Lee could continue it threw himself at him once again, but Lee was alert he threw a fist of fire at the incoming spirit right on its jaw, making it disappear into thin air, without his reason as to why it said what it did.
Lee looked back and forth between the buildings, once he felt he could leave he did, making his way back to the Portal Vines, still angry. Angry at Oppa. Angry at the unknown.
When he did make it back he let out all the anger he could at the vines. Shot flames at the vines to no extent, letting out all his anger at once.
If only these things could disappear and things would be normal again, he thought.
Mako was more like his second father. Maybe more than that. He was his mentor. He aspired to be like him, a great fire bender and a great leader. He thought him all he knew about fire bending, this couldn't be the end. Not his end.
And just when he thought all was lost he heard a voice. A voice that he would one day come to love and cherish.
