Ode to Sleep

        •Tyler•

I wake up to a jolt, groaning quietly as I roll over in my bunk to check my phone, squinting at the screen despite the brightness being all the way down. 3:27 am. We left around midnight, all of us exhausted. Stupid potholes, waking me up, I silently curse. Pulling my blanket back over me, I close my eyes, only to open them again when I hear rustling from Jenna's bunk above me.

I slide my curtain open and stick my arm up, feeling around for her. "Jenna," I whisper. Soft, blue light leaks out of her curtain from her nightlight. My fingers find what I think is her arm. "Are you awake?" I poke her several times, feeling like a little kid.

I hear her gasp. "Ty?" she whispers, finding my hand.

"Yeah, it's me. Are you okay?"

"I was having a bad dream."

I frown. "D-do you want to come and lay with me?" I ask, barely audible.

It's quiet for a moment. "Sure." The blue light disappears, everything becoming completely dark. I hear her shift as she climbs out of her bunk. I scoot over to make room in my tiny space as I feel her crawl in beside me. I hear the whoosh of my curtain closing.

I slowly wrap my arms around her. "Is this okay?"

"Yeah," she breathes, shifting closer to me. I can feel her breath, her exhales lightly tickling my neck. I feel her put a hand on my shoulder. "Wait...are you shirtless!?" she whisper-shouts.

"Uh, no, I'm wearing a shirt that's made out of flesh-like material. You can find the weirdest stuff on Ebay..."

She swats my chest playfully as I snicker. "At least you're warm."

Aw, she thinks I'm warm! I silently laugh at my inner teenage fangirl. "Do you want to talk about the dream?" I ask, lightly rubbing her back.

"Eh, it's just reoccurring stuff. Remember the dreams I'd have about Brett once a month or so? Now I've been having some about Brendon since a little before tour." She draws little circles on my shoulder blades, making me shiver.

"I'm sorry to hear that. I wish there was something I could do." I frown at the thought of what Brendon was doing in her dreams.

I feel her shrug against me. "I'm sure they'll go away eventually. Anyways, I have a question."

     "Go on," I murmur.

"The girls told me that your fanbase is called the Skeleton Clique. How did you come up with that?"

I grin. "Remember when we dressed up as skeletons our senior year?"

"Nuh-uh, you did not name that after one of my weird jokes. There is no way."

"Well, I did. It inspired it at least. I thought it was pretty clever. Everyone is the same when it comes down to their anatomy. Bones have the same basic structure and aren't different colors or genders. They're all equal."

"Wow. Also, you kept the hoodie I gave you?"

"Yep. I even found Josh one to match. We wear them at all of our shows." I hug her tighter.

"That made me so happy to see you wearing them. It really took me by surprise." She begins to snuggle into my chest, but I pull back, a thought popping into my head.

"I have a random fact for you."

     "Go on."

"Okay." I inhale deeply, trying to calm the sudden whirlwind of butterflies in my stomach. "Did you know that according to science, people can find each other's lips in the dark?"

"Is that so?" Jenna asks, a smirk in her voice.

"Um, well, I-I guess. I was wondering if you wanted to test that theory..." I hold my breath. Saying I'm nervous would be an understatement. We haven't kissed on the lips since high school. I haven't kissed anyone on the lips since high school!

"Hmm...I suppose we can," she replies after a moment.

I begin to grin uncontrollably, but do my best to relax my face as I place a hand on her cheek, leaning in blindly. Boy, I really hope that fact is true.

Sure enough, our lips find each other, and we gently share a kiss that's not-too-short but not-too-long, either.

"I didn't realize how much I missed that," Jenna whispers after pulling away.

"Yeah, that was a few years overdue, I guess." I chuckle awkwardly, reaching for my phone. "It's 3:43 and we have a show tomorrow."

"Yeah, we should probably go to sleep," she replies, squinting at the light. The screen fades out, plunging us into darkness once again.

"Well, I guess I'll let you go back to your bunk then." I start to scoot away, but she places a hand on my chest, stopping me.

"No, I'll stay." She settles down next to me, resting her head on my chest. I run my fingers through her hair as I lay back on my pillow, a wide smile plastered on my face. I listen to her breathing gradually slow, my eyes growing heavy as I wrap my arms around her. I fall asleep faster than I have in a long time.

A/N: So I already procrastinated writing this chapter because I didn't want to finish it too soon and then when I try to start I get sidetracked listening to the Star Wars BLR music and I was like, "I can't write with these vibes." Then when I finally got to the skeleton clique part I got sidetracked watching the Ode to Sleep live intro (only skeleton bones remain), which lead to the ERS intro and then to the Trench intro, all for a total of about 30 minutes. Then when I was trying to type the A/N, my cat was blocking my whole computer screen and partially sitting on my hands. I'm a mess lol.
