Chapter 16
While you were already on your way to the café where you were supposed to meet Harrison, he was pacing around his room, wondering why he didn't just sent you the final paper you needed to film your project.
It's been four weeks of only seeing you from afar, neither of you acknowledging each other's existence. Harrison knew that he missed you, but he definitely didn't know what it was that he felt after he left your flat.
He knew that if that was what a broken heart felt like, he wasn't ready to ever feel it again, but it's been four weeks now and it finally didn't hurt anymore to see you smile or to simply just catch your eye from across the room.
Harrison was doing fine without you, he sometimes went to a party with Tom and his brothers, but as much as he wanted to, he wasn't ready to talk to any girls yet. He tried to be the exact guy you told him he was, but he couldn't - because it still felt like he was cheating on you.
You weren't doing fine without Harrison, you had barely had a good night's sleep in the past weeks. The words you had said to Harrison haunted your dreams, making you wish you could go back in time, just to tell him that you're sorry and that you didn't mean it. Just to run after him in the hopes that he would forgive you for being the one to fuck your relationship up - because he meant so much more to you than you let him know..
Harrison was doing fine without you, he had mastered the art of pretending that everything between you was fine. Tom knew that Harrison was hurting and he knew that something had happened, but his best mate didn't tell him anything, so he waited patiently until one of you would tell him about it. Every time Harrison's family asked about you, he told them that you were fine, but just really busy at the moment - because he liked to pretend that you were still his girl.
You weren't doing fine without Harrison, Tom had tried to talk to you, but you shut him down. Yes, Tom was your friend too, but he was Harrison's best friend first and you thought that it was Harrison's right to tell Tom what happened. It was his right to tell him about how you broke his heart - because Tom had warned you that you needed to talk about your feelings or one of you would end up heartbroken.
Harrison was doing fine without you, but it didn't change the fact that he didn't know if he wanted to see you. He had hoped you would just tell him to send the pages and he would be fine, but you texting him that you wanted to meet up changed his plan to avoid you for the rest of the semester.
Hoping that Tom was home, he made his way towards the boy's bedroom door before knocking two times, "Tom?"
"What's up?" He heard Tom say from behind the door giving him the green light to open the door.
"You don't happen to be busy right now?" Harrison asked as he scratched the back of his neck.
"Why?" Tom knew Harrison would ask for a stupid favour, because that was his 'I need you to do something dumb for me'-face.
"You don't trust me, do you?" Harrison laughed as Tom shook his head, "You kind of need to go meet (Y/N) in a few minutes to give her my finished papers."
"Why don't you do it? Thought you were fine."
"W-We're fine, everything's fine, I'm just busy, okay?" Harrison said, knowing Tom wasn't buying his lie for a second.
Of course Tom wasn't buying his lie. He hadn't seen you with his mate for weeks now, and he most definitely knew that it wasn't because either of you were too busy to spend time with each other.
Harrison was full of shit and Tom made it his mission to get him to talk, because he saw him hurting as he tried to pretend everything was fine.
"Yeah, alright, I'll do it." Tom grinned.
"What's the catch?" Harrison groaned. "There is always a catch with you."
"I want to know what happened."
"How often do I have to tell you that nothing happened, we're fine, okay? Nothing's wrong, we're still cool, we're just really fucking busy, okay?"
"If everything's okay then you won't have a problem with taking an hour of your busy day to meet her, right?" Tom smiled, "I know you're full of shit, Harrison. Meet her and talk about the shit that happened or tell me and I'll go for you."
"Fine! You win, go meet (Y/N) and I'll tell you what happened." Harrison accepted his defeat as he threw the papers onto Tom's desk, "Twenty Minutes, I'll text you the address of the café."
"You better fucking tell me, mate. I'm tired of seeing you drown yourself in your own sadness like that."
Harrison didn't know if it was the right decision to avoid meeting you in person, all he knew was that he felt good with his decision. He had no idea what would've happened if he went to the café, would you talk to each other like nothing happened? Would it be awkward as hell because neither of you wanted to talk to each other? Or would it be completely different than he imagined it to be?
You were five minutes early as you picked a table in the back corner of the little café. It was safe to say that you were nervous about seeing Harrison again. You had revised this whole monologue of you apologising for being an asshole, but you knew that there was no way you would tell him all those things today. You knew that you wanted to apologise for everything you had said to him and you knew that you wanted the two of you to go back to being friends because you definitely missed spending time with him.
When Harrison still didn't show up five minutes after 3pm you got more nervous with each minute that passed. You were scared that he had decided that he didn't want to see you at all, that he was finally done with you and that you were not worth it - which you probably weren't, but you still hoped that he would at least tell you that in person.
You were checking your mails to see if he had sent the papers instead of giving them to you in person when you heard the bell ring, telling you that someone had entered the little café. Feeling your heart start racing, you looked up from your phone only for the feeling of being hit in the stomach consume you.
The second you saw Tom walk through the door, you knew Harrison wasn't coming. You knew, because it obviously wasn't a coincidence that Tom showed up at the place you were supposed to meet his best friend only a few minutes ago.
As soon as Tom spotted you, he saw the smile fall from your face, telling him that you were hurting just as much as his best mate was. You had stood up to greet the boy with a hug before he sat down opposite of you, making you wish you had just told Harrison to mail it to you - because then you wouldn't have to deal with the fact that Harrison didn't want to see you.
"Harrison asked me to give you the papers, something came up and he's sorry he couldn't meet you in person." Tom smiled as he handed you the stuff for your project.
"We made the plan like an hour ago, you don't have to lie, I know he doesn't want to see me." You smiled as you put the papers in your bag.
"You know you can always talk to me, you know?" Tom said when he saw how much you tried to keep your cool, "I thought I told you that I'm keeping you when you break up."
"We were never together, so we didn't break up." You scoffed, wondering what would've happened if you had agreed to this becoming real.
"The two of you sure as hell act like you did."
Tom stopped trying to get you to talk after you told him again that everything he claimed to have seen between the two of you was an act.
You were never together and all you did was put on a show to make it believable for everyone else. You felt yourself get a lot better at pretending that this between you was never real, mostly because it hurt less if you told yourself that you were just acting, but also because you wanted to believe that you had never felt those things you had most definitely felt.
You spent another half an hour talking about random things before Tom had to leave. Getting up from your seats, you were soon pulled into a hug by the brunette.
"There's a party tonight if you want to join us." Tom smiled, "Harrison won't be there, promise."
"I-I'll think about it okay?" You said, already knowing that you were most definitely not going to be there.
"We'll text okay?" Tom smiled before pulling you into another hug.
"Could you tell Harrison that I'm sorry for everything?" You smiled as Tom nodded.
Tom knew he needed to know what happened. Mostly because he was a nosy person in general, but also because he wanted to try and fix the two of you. He liked you and he liked Harrison, but he liked the two of you together even more.
"Harrison! Story time, you twat." Tom shouted as he knocked on the blonde's door before opening it and throwing himself on the boy's bed as if it was the most obvious thing to do.
"I didn't say you could come in." Harrison said, turning around on his desk chair to glare at his roommate.
"Well you said I was going to get the story, so go on, tell me the story."
"I don't want to. Hasn't (Y/N) told you all you wanted to know?" Harrison groaned, hoping you would've told Tom everything that happened between you.
"She didn't tell me anything except to tell you that she's sorry for everything."
"She said that?"
"She did, and if you ask me the two of you really need to talk about what happened because you're both pretending that everything's alright." Tom said as he propped himself up on his elbow to look at his mate.
"There's nothing to talk about, I told her we could make this real and she said no, nothing more to talk about, Tom. It's over, she did this because I was going to help her get a good grade and when the wedding was over, this between us was over as well and I didn't realise that before I told her we could make it real." Harrison said as Tom's mouth dropped open - was Harrison really not the one to fuck this up?
"Wait, again, you wanted her to be your girlfriend and she rejected you?"
"She told me that I was still me and that she didn't think that I'd ever wanted to put a label on something."
"And you believed her?" Tom raised his eyebrow.
"Uh, yeah, what else should I have done? I fell for her and she didn't fall for me, it's fine, really. I'm alright." Harrison shrugged, "I've just never been on this side of a rejection so I'm figuring out how to get over it but it's cool. She's just another girl."
"She isn't though, is she?" Tom felt bad for Harrison, he had never seen Harrison being rejected or heartbroken.
"Whatever." Harrison shrugged again, clearly done with this conversation about you, "Close the door on your way out."
Tom left the boy's room confused as to why you would reject Harrison. He saw how much the two of you liked each other and he had seen you look at Harrison with so much love in your eyes as if he was the only boy for you. There had to be a reason for you mess this up like that - and Tom made it his mission to be to one to find it out.
You were lying on your back on your living room floor, just staring at the ceiling. It was something you liked to do when life seemed to get the best of you. Just as you closed your eyes to think about what had gone wrong in the last month, your phone buzzed, revealing a message from the one and only Tom Holland.
Tom: We're going to a party. Harry, you and me. I won't accept a no.
No.
Tom: Nope, we'll be there at 9 for pre drinks.
You let out a groan as you realised you were not getting out of this one. You had gotten to know Tom and you knew he'd definitely show up. Hoping that you would be able to get out of the party if you talked to him in person, you texted him a quick Fine!
It was ten minutes to 9pm when you were standing in from of your closet, wondering if you should just put on your sweatpants and an old shirt since you were definitely not going out today.
Why would you want to go out with Tom and Harry? It's not like you didn't like them, it's more like everything about them reminded you of Harrison - and seeing them without Harrison for the first time would remind you about how the boy didn't even want to see you.
It was five past 9 when Tom and Harry arrived with bottles of pre drinks in their hands and full of motivation to get you to admit to them that you liked Harrison. It felt like they were constantly throwing in the boy's name in a random conversation, just so you would constantly be reminded of his existence.
You liked hanging out with Tom and Harry, especially now that you had a few drinks. You thought the alcohol made everything easier, because it was now easier to say Harrison's name without being close to bursting into tears, but you soon realised that the alcohol just made it easier to pretend like everything was alright between you.
You arrived at the party at 11pm. You wanted to go there, because the alcohol made it easier to forget and move on with your life. You wanted to be happy and right now, you were happy. You didn't know most of the people there, but it didn't matter to you, because right now, you were singing along to Journey as if you hadn't felt nothing but heartbreak within the last four weeks.
"Don't stop believin! Hold on to the feelin!" You heard Tom shout next to you as you burst out laughing.
"Streetlights! People!" You shouted back as Tom wrapped his arm around your shoulder, flipping Harry his middle finger as he had pulled out his phone, probably recording a Snapchat Story.
Harrison was lying on his bed when he got the Snapchat notification. Opening the Snap from Harry he felt his heart almost break into two pieces again.
He wanted to punch Harry for sending him that Snap of you singing and dancing with Tom. He wanted to punch Tom for partying with you - and he wanted to punch himself for not going out with them when they asked him.
Screw you, Harry.
Harrison saw that Harry started typing immediately.
Harry: Any chajnde of u pickinf us uo laterrrr?
Great. Harry was drunk off his ass and so were you and Tom probably. Harrison knew you could look after yourself and he knew Tom was usually still capable of getting someone home safe, but he liked the idea of him being the one to make sure his friends got home safe.
Yeah, just shoot me a text if you want to go home.
It was 2am when Harrison got a text from Harry, asking him if he could come and get them. Putting on one of his hoodies, he grabbed the car keys and typed in the address in his phone.
The blonde had no idea what he was expecting from seeing you when you were drunk, but he knew he'd much rather have you not talking to him the whole time but see you get home safe than you going home alone or with some random person.
You were laughing at something Harry said when you spotted a familiar someone walk through the front door. Everything in your body seemed to go numb as your eyes were still focused on the boy you were currently trying to forget.
Harrison's eyes caught yours as soon as he took his first look around the place in the hopes of finding his friends. He had texted the two boys but neither of them had seen the text, so he parked the car to look for you guys.
You looked beautiful. Harrison's heart started racing the second he saw you. He knew he shouldn't smile at you or even just look at you but he couldn't help himself. Walking towards you, he realised he had no idea what to say to you or what to do when he arrived next to you.
"Oii, Haz!" Harry shouted as he finally spotted his friend making his way over to the two of you.
"How drunk are you?" Harrison laughed when he saw Harry struggle to stand straight without falling on his face.
"Just a tiiiiiny bit!" Harry giggled as he showed Harrison that he could still touch his nose with his finger. Fun fact: he couldn't.
"Alright, where's Tom?" Harrison laughed as his eyes landed back on you.
"Should be 'round somewhere, I'll go look for him. Jus' get him outside." You smiled as your eyes scanned to room in the hopes of immediately spotting your brunette friend.
"I can help you!" Harry almost shouted in your ear as you rolled your eyes.
"I'll get him to the car." Harrison laughed as he pushed Harry towards the front door.
You found Tom within the next three minutes and at this point you weren't sure which one of the Hollands was the drunkest right now. Tom was slurring his words even more than you were and he definitely wasn't as steady on your feet as you still were.
Making your way outside to where Harrison was probably waiting for you seemed to take a decade because the boy kept stopping.
"(Y/N)," Tom said before a hiccup made him interrupt what he wanted to say, "I don't feel so good." Another hiccup, "I think" Hiccup, "I need to throw up."
You were glad that you had at least reached the front yard before Tom told you he needed a second alone behind the next bush he could find. A laugh escaped your lips when you heard him whine about never drinking again.
"Is he alright?" A voice suddenly startled you as you were deep in your thoughts, waiting for Tom to come back.
You didn't realise that Harrison had walked up to you to check where you were.
It's been ten minutes since he had successfully put Harry in the car and his plan was to help you look for Tom, but you had clearly found him - in a worse condition than he expected him to be.
"Jus' a bit too much to drink." You smiled as you rubbed your arms in the hopes of getting rid of your goose bumps which the cold night air had caused.
"A bit, huh?" Harrison chuckled.
"I think the last beer was expired." Tom groaned from behind the bush.
"Yeah, mate. Probably." His roommate laughed as another shudder ran through your body.
"Here," Harrison smiled as he pulled off his hoodie, "You can go wait in the car if you're too cold. I'll check on him."
The boy handed you his hoodie, making you hesitate for a second before ultimately accepting his offer and taking it from him. He was being too nice to you after what you had said to him the last time you were talking to each other.
"Thanks." You smiled before starting to walk towards the car while the scent of Harrison was surrounding you, making you feel safe and sound again only hours after he had made you feel like you were stranded in the middle of an ocean with no one to stop you from drowning.
