CHAPTER NINETEEN
FLASHBACK.
Sister Tayo's POV.
We got married, I got married to Kola. We did a plain court wedding because we were scared Don might show up.
A few weeks later, I heard and confirmed that Don died of heart disease. I was at ease, I knew it's unfair to be happy that he died but I was glad.
It was as though the storm in my life was over, I looked at myself in the mirror and I was glad my life was molding back into shape.
"Look who we have here, the new bride in town." Kola hugged me and we both stared at ourselves in the mirror.
"I can't be the new bride in town, I'm very sure more weddings would have been held after ours soooo." I chuckled.
"But, you'll forever remain new to me" He smiled.
Those days when I thought life was getting better, when I thought: After all I survived, those days when I was at peace, internally and externally. Luckily for me, I conceived, I guess God was merciful to me or I was really fertile.
A few months later, I was surprised at who I met at my doorstep. Remi!
"Would you at least let your sister in?" She looked pitiful.
"Yeah, co-come in" I stammered still shocked.
She apologized for not being there for me, she told me she realized how cruel she was and she regrets every bit of it. I was happy, I was happy at the fact that I now have my sister back and she realized how mean she was to me.
"Sis, you're living large! This is beautiful. Wow, so you mean your boyfriend owns this place?" She stood up and looked around.
"No he's not my boyfriend, he's my husband." I wiggled my fingers so she'd notice my ring.
"Tayo. You're married? You got married without telling me?" She asked looking very surprised.
"It wasn't something big, court wedding," I added.
"But still, it's still a wedding. Wow, so soon? So you mean you now own this place? Like you are his legit wife?" She asked randomly.
"Yeeeees" I feigned a smile.
"Wow, that's nice".
" Thank you" I smiled. I'm this type of person that forgives easily, as long as I get an apology. I allowed her to fool me again, a few weeks after she came by, she kept coming and coming. Sometimes with her daughter, Rose.
Days grew to weeks, weeks to months, and months to years; Kola lost his job. He was on loans so he used his house as collateral and many more of his wealth went down the drain.
"How do you intend to fend for this little child Tayo." She said to me during one of her visits.
"Sis, it's not that bad. I still have some money left with me, moreover, Kola still feeds us and does the needful." I said to her.
We moved to a new and smaller apartment and for months I didn't hear or speak with my sister Remi, most times when I called she'd say she was busy and forgot to call back. I stopped trying, after all, she was Remi; the mean sister I had.
Years later, actually the exact year they died, I visited Remi and luckily for me, I met her husband, Tunde. I gave them another opportunity for us to reunite again, let go of the past and move on. Most times Tunde couldn't look me in the face, I guess his conscience hit him really hard; and that was enough revenge for me.
"See how lean you look, how are you coping with those two kids." She asked me.
"Just the way we've been coping all these years sis." I feigned a chuckle.
"Tayo, I have a life-changing offer for you. That's if you're interested." She told me.
"Oh, ok. What's that." I've always known her to be a selfish type of person and I knew she was up to no good this time again.
"Well, there's this drug lord that's willing to give us a truck of goods to sell. If we're able to sell it all we'll have 50% of the money." She smiled.
"Really, Remi! You still do this shitty deals?" I was surprised.
"I've stopped a long time ago, but this is a life-changing offer. I'm talking about hundreds of millions. But we need six million naira, as a deposit in case if we don't get to sell it all." She said to me.
"Go ahead, what's my business with this? Like, how do I come in?" I asked.
"Well, if you want to be a part of this, you'll have to add two million naira," Remi said to me.
"Two million naira? I don't want to be a part of this. Thank you." Once beaten twice shy, I couldn't let her fool me again.
I had up to two million in my account, I've been saving up half of my salary ever since I got a job at Linkeup.com. Kola wasn't contributing to anything in the house, all he did was to sleep around with maids and little girls. Most times I heard rumors and I once caught him and my maid in bed together.
I thought of it all and stupidly transferred the surviving two million naira in my account to Remi. A week later, we got the goods as expected and Remi called to tell me it has arrived.
I followed Remi to where the truck was parked secretly and I saw the goods. I was relieved, I felt they were being honest this time. Tunde and Remi liked illegal deals. I was convinced it was the only paying job.
Tunde still had connections with most of Don's buyers, he contacted some of them and none was interested in buying.
A month later, I was already getting frustrated. The truck was parked in Remi's house, no one knew about this but me. I don't know how Tunde did it, we finally got a buyer, an old white man who intended to buy all of the goods. Remi called to share the good news and I rushed to their house.
"Wow, is this what I see it is?" I was surprised and happy when I saw the money in dollars.
"It is sis," Remi replied.
"Wow, he paid in cash? This is risky though. So today is Saturday and you can't deposit this into the bank till Tuesday, because there's a public holiday on Monday. Right?"
"Lower your voice. Yes, we'll keep ours till Tuesday." Remi smiled.
"Me too." I smiled.
"Have you given the man his share? I mean the drug lord." I asked.
"He was more than happy, he was really glad when I gave it to him. He wasn't expecting that much." Tunde told me.
"So may I have my share now ma'am," I said to them and we all laughed.
"Ok, ok. Here is two hundred thousand dollars. If you change this to naira, I think a dollar is now three hundred and sixty naira. So you should get seventy million Naira. Can you imagine how big that is? I'm so happy for you. Here, have it." She gave it to me.
" Are you joking." I laughed and she smiled.
"I'm not Tayo, I'm not. It's all yours." She added.
"But, Remi you told me when you called that he bought the goods eight million dollars and half of that should be four million right? So how am I getting just two hundred thousand dollars out of four million dollars? " I looked at them both and also at the money on the ground.
"Tayo, don't be disturbed by the remains of this money. We almost couldn't get half a million when we divided it, I still have to pay those who helped me get the buyer, the owner of the truck, the security man that almost caught me while I was driving the truck, and many more. Plus, that should be enough for you." Tunde said to me.
"Enough for me? Why do you guys want to cheat me? At least let me have a million dollar, you can have the remaining three Million." I said to them.
"Why are you being so difficult? Tayo, take this and leave!" Remi yelled at me.
"Ladies, we have to be fast about this; My daughter would be home any moment from now," Tunde said to me.
"You know what? You can have your money for all I care." I threw the money at them and continued.
"I should have known, you guys did this to me before, now you want to cheat me again after all you've put me through? You won't live to enjoy that money you have with you. This I promise you!" I said to them and left the house.
Actually, I made an empty threat that afternoon. I didn't intend to kill anyone, all I was expecting was for them to call me back to increase my share or I'll gladly accept the two hundred thousand dollars.
When I got home that day, my kids welcomed me. Kola noticed that I wasn't looking happy, he asked me what was wrong and I narrated the whole story to him how it all happened without adding or subtracting anything from it.
"Wow, so that was why you wanted to have your revenge the day you came to me. But you told me a different story Tayo." He was taken aback by what I told him.
"I'm sorry, it's a shameful story to tell," I said to him.
"It's fine, so now they have four million with them? You should have at least accepted the two hundred thousand dollars first before you started complaining. How foolish of you." He said to me.
"No, if I did; they won't take me seriously," I told him.
"So, what do you want to do now. You're the only one that knows they have that amount of money with them. I mean, except me." He asked.
"What do you mean by that?" I was confused. He then whispered to me and said.
"I have some people that can forcefully collect what is rightfully yours, I mean ours and also have them wasted if possible." He smiled at me.
"Really? But wasted, I don't know about that." I told him.
"If we send those guys and they forcefully collect the money from your sister and her husband, they'll definitely know it's from you. They might end up killing you. Think about it." Those were the words Kola said to me that day and it rang a bell in my head.
So that was how Kola recommended a man who was a hired assassin to collect the money from them and also have them murdered on Monday before they get to deposit the money on Tuesday.
The assassins murdered them successfully and came back empty-handed. Telling me, they searched everywhere in that house and found nothing.
After they passed, I stayed in the house for days with Rose their only daughter to see if I would get the money or something, but I failed. I guess they were smarter than I was anyway.
And that was how I lost on both sides; I lost the money, I lost my sister, I lost everything and I'm about to lose my life; because I definitely know I won't get away with this.
PRESENT TIME.
ROSE'S POV.
I couldn't hold back the tears after reading the story, indeed my parents were mean but she shouldn't have killed them.
