Chapter 8 | Opportunities
Part 8
Anna had been honest to Jay about whether or not she had opportunities to stay after this job. Jay ended up saying he understood and that she shouldn't give up her life for him in New York.
He just didn't know that she didn't have anything to tie her to New York anymore. She could move today and she would be fine.
The worst thing was that she could actually see it. She could see the two staying together, taking this to the next level. She dared to say that she could see a future with him.
It had been months and Anna wanted to wrap this mission up. It was taking too long, she was going to hurt Jay with the ending of this.
She knew it, yet she couldn't bring herself to let him go now, before they would get even closer.
Anna sat under the bridge on the hood of her rented car and stared into nothing. She had been having the feeling of someone watching her lately, so this was a test.
Flashes of the explosion played in her mind, she clenched her eyes shut as the explosion happened all over again. While everyone was running away– she was running towards the explosion, for as long as the force allowed her before it blew her back.
She had been close enough to see her partner's face before he went up into smoke. He screamed, he screamed for her help.
The guilt settled in again. Her partner Nicholas Tyrrell had gone rogue on a case, Anna had tried to help him and when he finally let her, she tried to convince him to wait for backup when they tracked down the drug and sex trafficking cartel. Isaiah Demico's.
They were just two people against twenty, it was odds Anna hadn't believed in. So, she told him to wait, but Nicholas didn't listen to her.
Nicholas left two children and a wife of twenty years. Anna had been left to deal with the mess his death unleashed. They would no longer see her. Everyone blamed her.
So, she was the one who had to make things right, she had to take Isaiah and his entire gang down. No matter the cost.
After reliving the incident for too long, Anna felt numb, at the same time a car rolled up in front of her and she kept calm.
"Hank Voight" Anna acknowledged when he exited his car. "Anna Lorenzi" Hank said and stepped up to her. "Why have you been following me?" She asked straight to the point.
"I know that you're working undercover. I talked to your boss, but I don't trust a chief who sends one agent into the field alone" Hank said.
"I'm more than capable on my own" Anna insisted. "Even if I call up Jay Halstead right now?" Hank said and showed her his phone, Anna looked at the screen and saw Jay's number and name.
"You think I'm using him, but I'm not" Anna said, killing the suspicion about her and Jay. "I believe you, I've seen you two together. I think what you have is real, but you're lying to him" Hank said and put his hands in his pockets.
"Let this case go and disappear or let me in on whatever you're working on and I might not have to crush my best detective's heart" Hank said.
"Either way it ends with heartbreak, Hank. Does it not?" Anna asked knowingly. "I suppose it does" Hank admitted.
"What are you doing here, Anna?" Hank asked. "I'm working a case" Anna simply said, but he already knew she would say this.
"I've seen you at Isaiah Demico's clubs. Why are you there?" Hank asked. "It's classified" Anna said, showing no emotion.
"Nothing is classified when it's in my city" Hank said with a scoff. "And what did my boss tell you?" Anna asks and tilts her head.
"It's classified" Both Hank and Anna said in unison. "I won't leave a mess behind when I'm done, Hank. Don't worry" Anna assured him.
"And Jay? Is he not gonna be a mess when you're done?" Hank made a low blow and Anna glared at him. "You're not manipulating me. Jay knew what he went into the night we met, he knows this will come to an end" Anna said.
But her heart clenched at the fear of crushing Jay's heart.
"Anna, if you need my help, here is my card. Antonio was one of my best detectives, I take care of my own and I still do. He made sure you could find him if you needed him, and you did. I can help, call me if you need it" Hank said and handed Anna a card.
Anna swallowed the lump in her throat and accepted the card. It couldn't hurt to have backup, right?
Hank's phone rang and he answered. "I gotta go, we got a new case" Hank said and Anna nodded. "Be careful, Anna" Hank added before he got into his truck and raced off.
Anna released a shaky breath and clenched her eyes shut. "I need you, Nick. To do this, I need you" Anna whispered, she opened her eyes and felt the wind pick up. It was about to rain.
In exactly a week after, Anna got the plans for the gun shipment. Isaiah had everything planned and Anna just had to show up in a truck.
She had also purposely distanced herself from Jay. Though it was hard, because the guy always made her feel better and knew what to say and do.
Anna glanced at Jay when she buttoned her shirt. She felt her heart flutter when he stirred in his sleep. He moved in his sleep and immediately searched for her body.
His arm wrapped around her thigh when she sat there, trying to get dressed. Anna reached down and brushed her thumb softly over his cheek.
Anna knew Jay had severe PTSD, he had his rough nights, he had been good at hiding them at first, but it was a matter of time before Anna had seen him.
Anna had experienced the same thing after she came back from Iraq. Her first and last tour, she never went back after that. But Jay did, he had gone back multiple times.
She ran her hand through his hair and savored the moment. He looked peaceful for once, Jay had a couple of rough days, so naturally he was struggling with sleep.
So, when Anna had started to put space between them, it had gotten worse. Which Anna felt even more guilty about.
Anna reached down and pressed a few kisses on his cheek. It was late at night, but Anna had to get to the club, she was meeting Isaiah.
Next week was the gun exchange. They had things to go over and Anna had to be part of everything, she needed to plan their downfall.
"Are you leaving?" Jay said in a hoarse, sleepy voice. "Yeah, I just got a call. I'll be back in a few hours, just go back to sleep" Anna said and raised from her bed.
Jay hummed and Anna crouched down next to the bed and ran a hand through his hair again, she pecked his lips and he kissed her back sloppily, she chuckled a little and pressed one last kiss to his cheek before getting up.
She slipped on a white pair of dress pants and grabbed her black coat. She headed out and drove there in a car she had rented.
When Anna arrived, the bouncer let her in immediately without checking her name. She had been there so often lately. He recognized her all too well.
She went straight to the VIP room and greeted Isaiah and his dealers. "Princesa, you made it" Isaiah said and kissed the back of her hand.
"Of course" Anna said and sat down along with the others, they went over the plans and planned who to drive which trucks.
Anna realized this wasn't just for her guns, it was drugs and girls as well. That's why the big trouble for this. All of the meetings.
It took hours to land a perfect plan, since everyone had objections. Anna had thought about pulling her gun out and ending it all there, but she wanted to ruin his entire business.
Many hours later, Anna was finally on her way back to the hotel. She got in the shower before greeting Jay who was hopefully still sleeping in her bed.
She showered the long night off of her and slipped one of Jay's shirts over her naked body and then she went into her bedroom, Jay was sprawled out across the bed, sleeping safely and sound.
Anna chuckled a little before sliding in next to him, she leaned over and laid her head on his back and placed a few kisses there, to let him know she was there.
Jay rolled over within seconds and scooped her up into his arms, he was still asleep, yet he had pulled her close like his life depended on it.
Anna brushed her hand over Jay's cheek and jaw, she loved how peaceful he looked.
In the morning Jay woke up first, noticing Anna was sleeping in his shirt, but also that she wasn't wearing any panties or underwear at all.
Jay smiled a little and pressed a kiss to her neck before moving them over, Jay was on top of her and Anna stirred in her sleep.
"Anna, baby" Jay whispered, Anna hummed sleepily, but didn't open her eyes. Jay laughed quietly before kissing down her neck, she hummed in satisfaction and let her arms wrap around his neck.
"Good morning to you too" Anna said sleepily and looked up at the fully awake man on top of her. She bit her lip and locked her legs around his waist.
Jay pressed his morning wood into her bare pussy and Anna moaned in delight. "A good morning it is" Jay said in a low voice and Anna hummed in agreement before kissing him.
Anna and Jay caught another round of bed gymnastics before both headed to the shower, automatically they had to take a round in the shower as well.
Anna moaning and panting when Jay pressed her front into the glass wall and fucked her fiercely from behind.
One hand on her spine and the other on her hip, never had Anna wanted to fuck in every room possible, like she had now.
After breakfast the two parted ways, heading for work. Both with pleased smiles on their faces.
