Part 30

Anna walked down the dark street until she turned up at a familiar apartment. Anna stood in front of the door for what seemed like forever before she lifted her hand and knocked.

Less than thirty seconds passed when the door opened. "Anna?" Jay's voice made her look up. Her anger from earlier raised to the surface and Anna clenched her jaw.

"We need to talk"

Jay stepped aside, letting her in. He was dressed in sweats and a CPD shirt. "I'm sorry for how I treat–""--No, let me rephrase that. I need to talk" Anna cut him off.

"You seem to get in the way of my love life every way I turn, so you wanted to know why I left you almost a year ago? I tried to find out why, why I felt so guilty, why I felt the need to run and hide" Anna snapped, jabbing her finger into Jay's chest.

Jay was quiet and let her talk, he was hoping her shouting at him was worth the information he was about to get. The answer he had been waiting for, for almost a year.

"Because I was so deeply, madly in love with you. I had fallen so damn hard for you, I had to leave! I had to protect you, I thought I was. I had to make it easier for you" Anna half shouted at him.

"I hurt you so deeply, and it scared the shit out of me– I was so blindly in love with you that it terrified me of the results of me having lived a double life with you. I lied to you, for so long" Anna was done ranting and realized how close they were, and took a step back.

"There's your answer! Goodnight!" Anna shouted and aimed for the door. "Hey! You can't just drop that bomb on me and then leave again–""--Watch me!" Anna scoffed and grabbed the door handle, but Jay hurriedly slammed his hand onto the door, blocking it.

"No, we're gonna talk this out" Jay disagreed and pushed himself between Anna and the door. "We don't need to talk it out. I got closure" Anna snapped.

"You got some nerve dropping this on me, I have begged you for that answer and you don't even want to hear my response to it?" Jay snapped.

"No"

"No?"

"Fine. What is your big response?" Anna shouted at him. Jay shocked her by pulling her closer by the back of her neck and crashed his lips onto hers. Anna kissed him back, feeling a magnetic pull, Anna pulled him closer by locking her arms around his neck.

Jay turned the two around and slammed Anna's back into the door.

The team caught a new case and everyone was gathered in the bullpen except Jay. Jay had been first on scene in a shootout and it all looked suspicious and corrupt.

"Let's go" Voight called out, the team rolled out to support Jay at the shootout. Anna's pulse was hammering in her neck, Antonio was holding onto the panic handle, with indeed much panic on his face.

Antonio looked back and forth between Anna's face and the cars she miraculously avoided to get to assist Jay. Antonio knew better than to say anything and trusted her to drive, even this maniacally.

"You okay?" Voight asked Jay once he made it out, Anna froze when she finally saw him and exhaled deeply in relief.

"Yeah, offenders are in the wind. The way this went down, there's gotta be more than one of them, 'cause he couldn't have got behind me that fast" Jay said and Anna overheard it.

"How many victims?"

"One, her name was Theresa Mattel. She was a student at Central Chicago University. Sarge, the offender fired three rounds. Two center mass, one head tap" Jay said as they walked up to Anna, Hailey and Kim.

"Doesn't sound like a mass shooting" Voight pointed out. "Yeah. I did not feel like one. He used a military stun grenade. M84" Jay said and took his vest off.

"Hey, you okay?" Hailey asked and nudged Anna subtly. "I did something stupid" Anna blurted out under her breath as her eyes followed Jay.

"Oh no, what did you do?" Hailey asked. "Well, Zach and I broke up and I might've gotten a little affected by it" Anna said, pausing and wincing mentally.

"How do you mean?" Hailey asked, confused, but then caught on to Anna's gaze on Jay. "Oh, did you go to him?" Hailey asked.

"I did..." Anna admitted. "And?"

"We got work to do" Anna cut it off before admitting what had happened to Jay's partner and her own friend.

"Sarge, we have a witness who saw our female victim running inside with a kid. She hid, heard gunshots, looked up, and saw the offender running for an exit with a boy over his shoulder" Kim called out, getting everyone's attention.

"Any sign of the boy?" Hank asked and Anna narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. "So, it was a kidnapping?" Anna realized along with the others.

Jay had pulled up footage of the shootout and the team got a feeling of what was going on. "It might be a long shot, but Narcotics has had a bead on a kidnapping and ransom crew they can't make" Antonio added.

"I heard about this. They're going after kids connected to West Side dope gangs" Anna said. Jay eyed her, flashes of last night playing behind his eyes, clouding his mind for a second.

"Right. The crew, they nab a kid, set ransom, banger pays them with drug money, never calls the cops. No victim, no crime. All they got is what they're hearing on the streets. Crew's three males. Black, Hispanic, white. Twenties, trained" Antonio listed.

"I mean, if we're to assume our guys had a getaway driver, it's a match" Antonio finished. "Dig into it" Voight ordered and Antonio nodded his head.

"Hey boss" Atwater called out. "We ID'd the boy. Theresa's calender says she picked up a Cody Barton. He was at a music lesson two blocks away from Randolph Park. Adam is on his way with the mom right now" Kevin informed everyone.

"Hey, tell Lugo keep a lid on this to the press. If there's a crew out there working a ransom, we don't want word of it to hit"

"Copy that" Atwater said.

Anna sighed and excused herself silently to the locker rooms. Jay saw and debated mentally if he should follow her or not.

Anna leaned her forehead against her locker and the cool metal calmed her down. Flashes of last night played in her mind. She felt herself getting hotter by the thought of Jay's lips against hers again, his body against hers, his skin melting together with hers.

Last night when the two had given in, they had almost ended up in bed together, Anna would've let it happen if his phone hadn't rung and Will had been all panicked about something on the phone.

Jay had answered and then Anna had slipped out of his apartment.

While Anna was reliving the memories, she hadn't seen Jay sneaking up behind her. Jay noticed the sign of distress on her face, he smirked a little before licking his lips.

He gently reached up to push her hair softly over her shoulder, freeing her neck to him. He watched as goosebumps formed on her skin, he loved how her body recognized him and trusted his presence.

He leaned slightly down to place a soft kiss to her neck, he felt her exhale shakily and he continued kissing softly up her neck, to just underneath her earlobe.

"Jay..." Anna whispered. Jay's hands were placed firmly on her waist, on each side, trapping her against the lockers with her back pressed into his chest.

"Anna..." Jay muttered teasing her. He expected her to make him stop, but when she turned around in his arms, she slammed her lips against his.

Jay kissed her back eagerly and unfortunately became too eager and pushed her back into the lockers, letting a loud echo of the noise ring through the entire locker room.

"Why did you leave?" Jay asked between kisses, Anna just kissed him harder and found herself not knowing why she had been so stupid to leave this man alone last night.

Anna could feel his excitement and Anna's own excitement was only getting worse when she felt just how aroused he was.

"Jay, we need to go" Hailey called out. Both detectives pulled away and froze. Hoping that Hailey couldn't actually see them, but just knew that Jay had walked in there.

"I'll be there in a second" Jay called out after clearing his voice.

Now Anna knew why she had left him. She had just become single yesterday, was she ready to drop herself into Jay's arms already? She loved him all this time. No one else.

She knew it now, she knew it then.

"We need to talk about this" Anna told Jay, who nodded in agreement. "Dinner, my place tonight, okay?" Jay said and Anna nodded her head agreeing.

Jay couldn't help but kiss her one last time before leaving to find Hailey. Anna let the back of her head collide with the lockers and she sighed.

That goddamn feeling never went away, so now she would embrace it instead of running away from it.

Anna knew she and Jay had become friends, perhaps a friendship was what was needed for her to realize she could safely let Jay into her heart and acknowledge it.

Jay ended up going undercover and Anna got an uneasy feeling in her stomach. She was preparing him with cameras and trying to walk through the plan with him.

"Ruzek will log everything. I'll stick by you in the field, and Antonio will be there as a second. We'll have eyes on you even if you can't see us" Anna said and put the camera in his shirt.

"Why the neutral?" Jay asked and looked down at her. He referred to the vote the team had to make whether Jay was going under or not.

"Just been a little concerned lately" Anna said, glancing up quickly before back down at the wire.

"About what?" Jay asked her. "About you" Anna retorted with a small eye roll. "You cover well, but I got eyes, Jay. You sure you're solid?" Anna asked.

Jay looked at the screen and Anna's face on it, from the camera in his shirt. He smiled a little when he saw the details of her face on the screen. "Yo, we just got the undercover Narcotics up to speed. We got the coverts trailing Luis to the Veil Club" Atwater called out.

"Uh, bartender there is named Camila. That's his sister" Kevin finished, both Anna and Jay nodded their heads to the information. "Let's roll"

Jay going undercover was a mess, he beat three guys up and fled with Luis. Anna was left to deal with the guys he knocked out on the floor.

"You alright?" Anna said and watched as Jay ran out with Luis. That dinner at Jay's apartment never happened, because Jay didn't let the team hear from him for hours and hours.

Anna was anxious and Hank ended up telling the team to go home. Anna was pissed, for one, that he ditched their date. Secondly, he delivered so many punches, he was supposed to throw one...

Anna had no idea where he was and what he was doing or who he was with...
