Part 28

Inspired by season 6 episode 2 part 2.

"Chicago PD!" Kevin shouted and broke down the door. Letting Anna take the lead, as she pushed past Jay who was trying to go in first.

Anna secured the rooms, with the guys behind her, she felt Jay's anger from a mile away. Then as they were about to accept the apartment was clear, the lights turned on.

Machines powered up and Anna looked around feeling exposed and unsafe. "What the hell" Anna cursed, her voice shaky. "Woah– everybody stop. Do not key your radios" Voight called out, Anna saw the cameras and looked panicked around.

Anna blamed Jay for this, his carelessness was affecting her judgment. The entire team's.

"The cameras are motion-sensored?" Kelley asked the team when they had gotten back outside. "Yeah, motion-sensored and hooked up to Daniel Mendoza's cloud. As soon as we moved in, cameras recorded and sent images digitally" Anna explained to him.

"That's smart. I mean, this apartment's gotta be his contingency plan. He set it up as a fail-safe. If his plan failed and the cartel came for him, the apartment would alert him" Antonio added.

Severide pulled Anna aside. "Hey, are you okay?" He asked with a raised eyebrow. "No, honestly, I'm not. But I have to be till this case is over" Anna said.

The team got confirmation that there were no explosives in the apartment and Jay spun out. "So, we're waiting for nothing. He's probably in the damn wind. We basically just told him to run" Jay snapped.

Anna looked down and Kelley looked at her. Sensing just how much Jay's anger was affecting her, he'd been updated by Hailey and Adam how Jay had treated her while grieving and he wasn't a fan of it.

"All right, so we get ahead of him. Get out a BOLO, investigative alert, emergency ping" Hank said. "All right. You got it, Anna?" Jay called out, nodding his head towards the car they drove in.

"Jay?" Kelley called out, making Anna look up at him. "Yo, I've been meaning to tell you, I'm–""--Don't. Don't. Kelley, honestly, man, you're like, the only guy that hasn't given me some half–ass sympathy speech. So you don't have to, all right?"

"No, I wasn't going to. I was gonna say I wanna be here when you find him. We pulled bodies out of that fire. I watched Stella almost lose her life. For a cartel hit? Anything I can do to help, anything, I'll help" Kelley said.

"All right, thanks man" Jay said and shook Kelley's hand. "Oh and Jay– make sure this one walks out of this alive, no matter how clouded your mind is" Kelley called out, squeezing Anna's shoulder. The exhaustion was clear on her face as well as the mental stroll it'd taken on her.

"Always" Jay said exhaling deeply, his eyes became vulnerable and Kelley nodded before side hugging Anna. "Be careful" Anna said and the firefighter nodded his head.

Anna went with Jay and the two drove in silence. Jay went in and got the two a coffee to keep going, he let Anna stay in the car, to relax for just a few minutes.

Back at the district the team tried to break it down to find Daniel. Jay ended up convincing Hank to let him and Voight talk to Carlos.

Anna watched as Jay put his gun on his desk, opposite of Anna's. "Man, Jay is on fire" Atwater muttered. Anna remained quiet and began to attempt another way in.

"Anna?" Hailey called out, but Anna typed her life away on that computer. If someone asked her if she was okay, she'd break. So, she ignored Hailey, which made the blonde back down immediately, she knew her well enough to know.

"Juan Mendoza, Carlos has another son!" Anna finally found something. "He's married, has three kids. Got no connection to the cartel. Good job downtown, we pick him up, he's our access point to Carlos" Anna said.

"We ran Juan. We got nothing on him" Adam said. "They don't know that" Jay butted in. "Contrary to public opinion, fathers have favorites. If we squeeze Juan, Carlos rolls on Daniel" Jay said.

"Okay, it's too risky" Hailey said and Anna nodded, agreeing. "We get Juan involved, then he's actually involved. The cartel starts gunning for him, too" Hailey said.

"Yeah man, that ain't right. There's gotta be a better way to do this" Adam and Anna agreed. "Like what?" Jay asked, shrugging his shoulders.

"Exactly. We're at a dead end, right? I don't even know why we're debating this" Jay said. His words ticked off Anna and she scoffed. "Because we're playing with an innocent man's life, Jay" Anna retorted.

"Five other innocent people died because of this guy's not-so-innocent brother and father. So I'm sorry if my heart doesn't bleed like yours" Jay snapped.

"Excuse me?" Anna snapped standing up and taking a step towards Jay. "Okay, that's enough. It's what we have. It's what we'll use. Bring him in" Hank said.

Both Jay and Anna stood frozen on the spot, Anna debated on whether or not to knock him on his ass. Jay finally looked into her eyes and Anna scoffed before showing just how disappointed she was at him before backing off, turning on her heel.

Hailey, Adam and Jay got into a brawl when picking up Juan. Jay almost attacked the guy and Hailey had to shove Jay away.

Anna felt so affected by Jay lashing out this way, she wanted to be there. But Jay wasn't ready to let someone be there for him, not before the one who started the fire was found.

She tried to bear with Jay lashing out on her as well, endangering her life, he was so careless, no matter who he brought down with him to find the firestarter.

Jay's play ended up making Carlos break, so Carlos told them what they needed to know and agreed to give them Daniel. Anna and Jay teamed up to catch him, despite Anna's trust issues with Jay.

"Jay, you're not coming" Hank told Jay. Anna bit her lip as she knew Jay was about to explode. "What?"

"Give me your keys, and your two way" Hank said. "You gotta be kidding me" Jay said, but he was looking at Anna. Probably blaming her.

"It's for the best, Jay. Keys and the two-way" Hank said and walked away. "You're too close, Jay" Anna half whispered.

"What does that mean?" Jay snapped at her. "He's your dad. I didn't say anything–""--You don't know anything about my dad"

"I'm not pretending to–""--No, you're just projecting whatever parents–daughter crap got you screwed up" Jay snapped at her.

"Okay, I'm done being your punching bag. Give me your keys. Give me your goddamn keys, Jay!" Anna shouted at him.

"Two-way" Anna added when he finally gave her his keys. Once he gave it to her she hurried away from him. Tears were streaming down her cheeks as she went to her car.

She let her head hit the headrest and she shouted curses before following Voight out of the spot. "Goddamnit Jay, why did you do that?" Anna shouted at no one in particular.

Jay called Severide for help and Severide texted Anna the details. Anna redirected her car to get to where Jay and Severide were.

But Jay got there first. Jay was chasing Daniel while Anna was driving like a maniac. "Police stop!" Jay shouted as he chased the guy.

Daniel pulled a gun out and shot at Jay, hitting him, while Jay shot at him as well. Both going down injured. "Come on, Jay. Where are you?" Anna whispered to herself.

"This is 5021 George, emergency. Shots fired. Offender down. Need an ambo. Lower Wacker and Columbus. Just try to get him some help. Get him help" Anna heard.

Anna ditched her car and started running. "Jay! Call out" Anna shouted. She heard grunting and groaning and just as she turned a corner, she saw Jay, bleeding.

"Jay? You okay?" Anna shouted. Anna slid onto her knees and saw the blood. Adam called it in while Anna ripped Jay's shirt open, revealing a white bulletproof vest, but he had been shot in the side.

"It didn't go through. It's okay, you're gonna be okay, just breathe. Come on" Anna stuttered and kept his head up and leaned her forehead on his chest momentarily to catch her breath.

Ambulances and police filled the place and Jay was checked out by Foster and Sylvie. Anna was in shock and stood far away from the ambulance.

She couldn't get near him. Anna could hear Foster saying he was okay, then Voight came and put Jay in his place, shouting at him.

Anna flinched at the tone and her face remained void. Finally she pushed herself to go talk to Jay. She sat down next to him in silence. "Daniel?"

"He was pronounced at MED. Antonio's with Juan and Carlos. He's taking them into protective custody. DEA says bodies are already dropping in Mexico, so.." Anna trail off.

"So a happy ending?" Jay said. "Anna...I just couldn't stop myself" Was all Jay said, his words stung and Anna had to get up and walk away before she crumbled like a piece of paper.

She shot him a small smile and got up. Her face struggled to keep her emotions in as she put more distance between her and Jay. Atwater saw and walked up to her.

"Hey" Atwater softly called out. "Hey" Anna said and nodded his way. "You alright?" Atwater asked as he followed her. "Yeah, fine" Anna responded, but her body betrayed her.

She began to break down and Atwater pulled her into his side. "Oh.. yeah that's the adrenaline" Anna sobbed and Atwater got her around the corner from everything happening and let her get it out.

He knew her well enough to know just how long she'd held this in. "I thought he was dead" Anna sobbed. "Yeah, me too"

"You know what? Let's get you a drink" Atwater said. Anna nodded and the two left the scene. Anna turned her personal phone on and realized she had gone MIA on Zach for the last 36 hours. Her phone had been blown up with texts and calls.

Atwater drove them to a bar where they could be in peace. Anna and Atwater was able to settle down, Anna drank her sorrows away. The pain mending while being washed down with Alcohol. Atwater watched her and frowned a little, he later texted Kim where they were.

Cause Atwater knew he would need backup with Anna. The girl was crumbling apart.
