Chapter 20 | Guilt
Part 20
Jay carried Anna in his arms with Voight behind him as easily thirty police cars pulled up to the empty building. "Give me an escort to Med!" Hank shouted.
"Hang on, Anna" Jay said as he got into the backseat with Anna on his lap as Hank raced off, police cars clearing the streets.
"How's it looking?" Hank shouted back to Jay. But he didn't answer, it didn't look good and he didn't want to voice it. Anna was drifting in and out of consciousness.
"Jay!" Hank shouted.
"Thank you" Anna whispered, Jay leaned his head against hers and exhaled a deep shaky breath. "Go faster!" Jay begged. "We're one minute out" Hank called out.
Before Jay knew it, Anna was taken from his arms and a small puddle of blood was on the seat and his clothes were stained from the blood.
"Will" Jay called out to his brother. Jay felt deja vu, he had been in this situation before with Anna, Will knew it as well. Jay didn't have to say anything else, Will took over.
This time the Intelligence team and Trudy walked up behind Jay backing him up. "She's gonna be okay" Hailey said and Jay silently watched them wheel her away.
"What happened to Harry? Is he in custody?" Trudy asked. "He's dead" Jay answered plainly. "Let's get you out of these clothes, man" Adam said and pushed Jay towards the toilets.
Kim and Hailey got Jay a new set of clothes and he changed into it. But he still felt stained with Anna's blood.
"Any news?" Severide asked as he came in, with the entire 51 firehouse. Everyone sat down with the detectives and officers in the waiting room.
"Nothing yet" Adam said. Jay was staring down at his hands, feeling them being stained with her blood, but he knew he had washed them fifteen times.
"She's gonna pull through, Jay. It's Anna, right?" Severide said as he went over to him to talk to him. "Yeah" Jay said, but his mind was screaming his worst fears at him.
"She was in bad shape, Severide" Jay said, doubt flashed across his face and Severide clenched his jaw. "She's gonna pull through, Halstead and then she will whoop your ass for doubting her" Severide said and Jay sighed.
He would love it if that was the case, but his fears spoke louder than her odds.
Hours went by and every first responder stayed in place, for Anna alone.
Finally Will came through the door and Jay jumped up immediately. "Is she okay?" Jay asked immediately, alarming everyone else in the waiting area. Everyone stood up and Will felt the pressure of delivering the news.
"She's stable for now, but she's not out of the woods, yet" Will said with a sigh. He hated that he couldn't give his brother anymore reassurance.
"Can we see her?" Voight asked. "No, it's too soon, she's too fragile. I almost lost her twice" Will said. "Give her a bit more time, we're monitoring her" Will said.
Will gave everyone a sad smile and as he turned on his heel, Jay followed him. "Room number" Jay demanded. "Jay...–""—Room number" Jay hissed.
"310"
Jay slipped out of the crowded waiting area and Will followed his brother to Anna's room. Jay opened the door and saw Anna hooked up to more machines than he could count.
Jay walked up to her side and gently took her hand in his. "You got this, Anna. I know it can be awful here, but give it another chance, okay?" Jay muttered to her.
Jay brought her hand to his lips and exhaled deeply. He swore he felt her squeeze his hand a little and he smiled, knowing she'd heard him.
"Jay, it's time to go. You're really not supposed to be here" Will reminded his brother. Jay nodded and got up and left before he got Will into more trouble.
Jay was back in his seat and remained more calm than before, he got a good feeling in his stomach after seeing her and feeling her squeeze his hand a little. It was soft and weak, but she definitely squeezed his hand, he was sure.
Many hours later, a new presence in the room got Voight's attention. "Voight? What the hell is going on here?" Antonio Dawson's voice shocked everyone and they all turned to him.
"Antonio, I'll explain. Come with me" Voight said and immediately brought Antonio away from the anxious people.
Gabby had called her brother to tell him how Anna was in the hospital and that it was bad. Antonio was filled in by Voight, he told him everything from the mission Anna had first come to Chicago to do, to her situationship with Jay, to staying in Chicago and the last case with Harry O'Hara.
Antonio beat himself for not having told Anna that he wasn't in Chicago back then, it could've saved her a lot of trouble.
But now he was back and he was there to stay.
Jay sat still, he hated Anna for never telling him why she left him. He hated Anna for not telling him or the entire team that some freak had stalked her and watched her.
Even if she didn't know it was O'Hara. She should've asked for help. She shouldn't have ignored it. Jay became furious with her the more he added things to blame her for.
But most of all he hated how she still made him feel. Jay's feelings for her never disappeared, they were just clouded by his anger towards her.
What made it harder to get over her, was the way she was. Anna's personality was amazing, she already knew so many people here in Chicago.
Jay saw it by how many showed up to support her in the hospital. He hated how good she was. He hated that Anna may have been real about their relationship back then when they met.
He hated how she didn't use him for her mission, it would've made it easier to hate her. But it had been real, he had seen the real Anna, the Anna he fell for was who she was, not an undercover character.
Jay stood up, needing to escape his thoughts and Hailey watched him surprised. Jay ran a hand over his face and sighed.
He hated how he so easily had fallen for her and still he wasn't over her. Six months later, he was still feeling those stupid butterflies and tingles. Despite the hatred he tried to hold against her.
Jay had been able to become friendlier lately, forming a friendship they both needed, they were there for each other. Anna had his back and she had shown it many times already.
Jay had realized it wasn't necessarily because of her guilt, it was just who she was. He had seen how much she cared for the team. He knew then that it was just her personality.
He knew he could count on her, in a shootout, she was who he wanted next to him. But the way Anna had called Jay's name in that warehouse, when she had sat there all defendless, calling his name, begging him to save her.
He felt like he had failed her, sure he had put a bullet into Harry's forehead before he had the chance to drive that knife into her stomach, but he hadn't been there fast enough.
He should've worked harder, he should've been faster to alert everyone. He should've trusted his gut, the second he felt something was off.
He felt like he had let her down. Harry had beaten her, cut her clothes off, who knows what he would've done to her if they hadn't found them. He and Voight. Who knows what sight they would've had to see when they found her too late. Just five minutes later.
"Jay, calm down" Hailey half whispered to Jay, people were watching him as he paced and constantly ran a hand through his hair or over his face.
"It's my fault" Jay said. Voight overheard and stepped away from Antonio for a second. "Hey, no– this is all Harry O'Hara. You found her, you tracked her down, you trusted your gut" Hank said.
Jay shook his head not believing a word he said, but Hank pushed Jay away from the curious eyes and ears.
"Hey, don't do this now. Anna will pull through. She will heal from this, but she's gonna need you and the team to help her do that" Hank said.
"Jay" Will called out, alerting everyone. "She's awake. She's stable" Will announced.
