Chapter 17 | Flashlight
Part 17
Anna woke up in the middle of the night, only to see a flashlight directed into her bedroom window. Her eyes widened and she grabbed her gun. "Hey! What the fuck" Anna shouted and got out of her bed immediately.
The person fled and Anna ran out in barely any clothing, but with her gun in her hands she felt safe enough. She saw nothing when she ran out of her driveway.
The person was gone.
Anna was breathless from the adrenaline pumping through her bones. She took another spin around herself to see if the person was around. But nothing happened so she ran back inside.
A person had been watching her while sleeping. After securing her doors, she grabbed her phone only to see a few missed calls.
Anna narrowed her eyes, it was two in the morning. Anna called Adam back. "It's Al" Was all Adam needed to say. Anna got dressed shakily and raced to the hospital.
Anna was still shaken up from the window stalker, but she had to be strong for Al. Something was dangerously wrong.
"Anna?" Hailey called out once she saw the brunette walk through the doors of the hospital. "Someone stabbed Al, multiple times. It's not good" Kim said.
"Are you okay?" Hailey asked, noticing the extra panic on her face. "No, yeah– can I crash with either of you for a couple of days?" Anna asked.
"Sure, you can stay with me" Hailey said, Kim touched Anna's shoulder and gave her a small smile. "How is Voight holding up?" Anna asked.
"Everyone" Adam called out. Hank walked into the waiting room and Anna knew it was bad.
Hank didn't say anything, he didn't need to. A simple shook of the head let the team know what they had feared. Al was gone.
Anna felt a gut wrenching pain, like someone had just hit her in the stomach with a sledgehammer. Tears immediately prickled in her eyes, some dropping.
Jay stormed out and Anna felt dizzy, not understanding how this could be reality. But while everyone was falling apart, Anna pulled Hank into a hug.
He didn't fight her, he hugged her back, allowing her to help him just a little. Like he had helped her.
Trudy sat down and Kim was crying as well. Hank pulled away and captured Trudy in a hug as well. Anna squatted down, to take deep breaths.
Nothing helped, she was panicking, grieving and struggling with the fact that this wasn't a nightmare.
Anna felt it harder to breathe when Ruzek engulfed Kim in a hug, so Anna left the room. Anna stormed out of the hospital with determination. She needed to break down, once she pushed the hospital doors and fresh air engulfed her.
She felt like she could breathe. Sobs escaped her throat as she fought to make her way to her car. Anna's hands shook as she tried to get her car keys to unlock her car.
"Fuck!" Anna shouted in the rush of anger. Anna gave up working her car keys and slid down the side of her car. She sobbed and hid her face in her hands. She couldn't believe it.
Al was really gone.
"Anna?" A voice called out. She couldn't make out the person until he stood in front of her, Jay crouched to her level. His eyes were blood red from the tears and his cheeks were wet.
"Come on, we gotta get back in" Jay said with a shaky voice. "We need to know what to do now, how to find the guy who did this" Jay said.
Anna didn't look at him, she just kept sobbing. She slowly felt Jay's arms around her and his cheek pressed against the side of her face.
"Come on" He whispered, but he was crying again himself. After a few minutes passed Anna ran out of tears. She tried to catch her breath and held onto Jay's shoulders, slowly Jay pulled back and kept his hands on her shoulders as well.
Somehow Jay and Anna agreed on getting up, still holding onto each other. Anna pulled Jay into a proper hug and Jay felt a certain warmth from her body, one he needed right now to keep his shit together.
"It'll be okay" Anna half whispered, she knew Jay had known Al for much longer than she had. Still he had been comforting her, she tried to return the gesture and when she pulled away from the hug she put a hand on his cheek and the other on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, Jay" she whispered. Her thumb caressed his cheek a little and she took a final sigh before pressing a kiss to his other cheek. "I'm so terribly sorry for your loss" Anna finished and stepped back.
"Stay with me" Jay caught her off guard and she slowly nodded. She wasn't sure what he exactly meant by asking her this.
But she figured whatever he had meant was in the moment of grief. Something he'd regret once it had passed. The two walked back inside the waiting room, at the same time Atwater walked back in.
Anna tried to remain calm, ignoring the way more waterworks were pressuring her tear ducts. She and Jay stood next to each other and remained quiet, neither daring to speak up.
"All right, I know. I mean, we're all in pain. I get it. But the best way to honor Al is to find the son of a bitch responsible for this. So, for now, let's put all our energy, all our passion, our love for Al, into finding the person who did this. I know that's what Al would want" Voight spoke up.
"I guarantee it. Then, when this is over, when we got this prick, then we'll mourn Al" Hank said. Sniffles and deep breaths were all that filled the room.
"So, take the time you need. But just know, right now, we got some business to do" Hank said and left the room.
"Get some rest if you can, we'll meet at the precinct in a few hours" Jay spoke up. Everyone nodded their heads and Hailey put her arm around Anna's waist when Anna put her arm around her shoulder.
"Let's go" Hailey whispered when people cleared out except for Jay. "Give me a minute" Anna said and Hailey nodded before leaving the two alone.
"Let me know if you need anything, Jay" Anna half whispered. Jay began to open his mouth and she knew right then what he would say. "If I did– Jay, you would regret it and neither of us needs this right now" Anna cut him off, knowing he had asked her to stay with him.
"Maybe you're right" Jay admitted and put his hands on her waist. Anna nodded and pulled him into another hug. He held her closely and took a deep breath before closing his eyes.
"I'll see you in a few hours" Anna said once she pulled away. Jay nodded as his arms retreated to his sides. Anna squeezed his shoulder before leaving, she found Hailey waiting down the hall and the two drove to her apartment.
Anna slowly told Hailey what had happened at her house, not to take the grief away from her, but to get it off her chest as to why Anna wanted to stay over at Hailey's.
"You need to report that" Hailey had said, but Anna brushed her off and asked her to keep it to herself while they were going to find Al's murderer.
Hours later everyone arrived at the prison Al was murdered in. "All right, where are we at?" Hank asked when he walked into the office the team had taken in the prison. "Prison is on lockdown" Adam said.
"Good, keep me in the loop" Hank said. "Guards are going through cells, hallways, laundry rooms, looking for blood" Kim said.
"Any eyewitnesses?" Hank asked. "Not yet, we talked to inmates that were proximity to the stabbing," Anna said.
"Well inmates being blind, I get. What about guards?" Hank asked. "No luck so far" Kim added. "The weapons at the lab. They're checking it for prints and DNA" Jay cut in as he entered the office.
Anna looked away as she remembered how he had wanted her to stay with him last night. "It was a plastic comb before they turned it into a shank" Jay finished.
"Boss, I found a guard who actually saw the attack. His name is Dietz. He's waiting in the hallway for you" Adam said.
"Kim, Hailey, track down every frame of surveillance video you can get your hands on" Hank said as he backed out of the office. "Got it" Both Kim and Hailey said.
-
"We get that surveillance video yet?" Hank asked once he came back in. "Ruzek's pulling it up right now" Anna said.
Everyone settled down to see what the camera's showed. "All right, four cameras, all of Cell Block G. Here comes Al walking right there. Walks up to these two guys. They start jawing" Ruzek points out as the videos play.
"Guard comes, breaks it up, two guys keep moving. Now, this is a different angle, different camera" Adam said and typed to show the video. Anna held her breath as she felt the fear of watching Olinsky get murdered.
"You're gonna see the guard still with him at this point. Now the guards gonna get a phone call right here and break away. Al keeps walking towards his cell" Adam says and pressed pause on the video.
"This is where it happens" He warns everyone. Anna feels the tears pressuring her eyes again and she clenches her jaw. "Okay, run it" Hank says once taking a look at everyone's faces. To see if they could handle it. Adam clicks the button and the video resumes.
"Wait, freeze it" Hank says. Kim starts to break and Anna steps back, accidentally stepping into Jay. His arm supports her waist and she stays still, her hand covering her mouth in horror.
"All right, blow it up" Hank ordered. "Still can't see the bastard's face" Kim says, her voice breaking a little. "All right, so we got any other angles? Other cameras?" Voight asks.
"Pulling it up right now" Adam said in a low voice which suggested they would see some things they wouldn't like. "The hell is he doing?" Kevin retorts when he sees the guard pretending to have a phone call and then hides behind the wall.
"He's just standing there" Hank says. "He's a coward" Kim snaps. "The son of a bitch is in on it"
What do you guys think about this one?
