*Cassy's POV*
I sat in my room, my fingers effortlessly braiding my hair to the side of my head, as my mind was preoccupied with a whirlwind of thoughts.
There was so much for me to think about lately. It has been four months since Lady Dis's arrival in Erebor and in those four months a lot had happened.
Number one; Brielle and I have grown a lot closer over the time she's been here and I have to admit that I have loved finally having a female friend. I mean I love my friends but it's nice being able to talk to someone about things other than training and stuff. The only problem is Brielle still hasn't met the company yet, only Kili. She was too nervous meeting new people so I told her that I'd only introduce her when she was ready.
Number two; More dwarfs have arrived in Erebor and the whole mountain has finally been restored, much to Fili's relief. He's also begun meeting with the people of Laketown and their new leader Bard to discuss plans for rebuilding Dale to its former glory.
Number three; the biggest news of the four months was when Fili had formerly announced the date of Kili and I's wedding. It was only a month away... Well actually less than that, 25 days and counting. To say I was a nervous was an understatement. A big understatement.
I had only confided in Brielle so far that I had been feeling nervous about marrying Kili. It wasn't that I didn't want to marry him; I wanted to marry him and be with him more than anything but I couldn't help feeling the strange butterflies in my stomach.
And not to mention the fact that I would have to wear a dress again, much to my displeasure. But I could deal with it, I guess.
But one thought that kept racing through my mind was... who was going to give me away at my wedding?
...Caspian was my first and only choice but obviously that wasn't an option. Fili had to be by Kili's side so I couldn't ask him. I thought about Lord Dain but for some reason I couldn't picture him giving me away, he may be my friend but he didn't seem the right person.
Then I thought of Balin but then realised that he would be the one conducting the service so I couldn't ask him either.
I thought about all my companions but none of them seemed right for it. They were my friends basically family but I needed a real member of my family to walk me down the aisle, but that wasn't possible.
I sighed and stood from my bed before exiting my room and began walking down the corridors, not paying attention to where I was going.
"Cassy!"
I turned at the familiar voice and smiled at Balin as he hurried over to me.
"Good evening, Balin." I smiled as he walked with me.
"Aye, it is." He said with a kind smile. "What are you doing wandering the corridors?" He asked.
"I could ask you the same thing." I countered with a grin.
"I was actually looking for you." He said which made me raise my eyebrows in question.
"Really? Why?" I asked as we continued walking.
"Someone has asked for you. He's in the throne room with Kili, Fili and the others." He explained.
"Who?"
"He didn't say his name, he said he'd only speak when he saw you."
I frowned in thought. "Okay, let's go."
I followed Balin as he led me towards the double doors to the throne room. The guards opened the doors and I gasped upon seeing the person stood facing the company. It couldn't be him... I hadn't seen him in forty years... it wasn't possible and yet here he was.
He had our family's signature raven black hair which fell in front of his purple eyes, the same purple eyes as his father, my father and me. He had pale skin and the Manaria smirk that looked far too much like Caspian and my father's.
His leather jacket was unzipped revealing his tanned sculpted chest that had a past scar across it, his black trousers hung loosely on his hips and his dual swords were on the ground beside his feet.
It was my cousin. It was Devlin Mandaria, Donovan's son.
"Hello Cassandra." He smiled as he caught my stunned gaze.
"Devlin..." I breathed. "I thought... I thought you went missing."
"I was locked up for six years by goblins but I managed to escape. It was nothing I couldn't handle." He smirked.
I just stood there, in a trance of shock as I stared into his purple orbs that mirrored mine.
"Aren't you going to give your dear cousin a hug?" He grinned.
That grin snapped me out of my thoughts and I grinned back and strode over to my only remaining family (with the exception of my Aunt Nanallia). As soon as I was within reaching distance he moved forwards and pulled me against his chest and wrapped his strong arm around me.
I missed this... I missed him... I missed being held by my family.
"What are you doing here? How did you know I was here?" I asked as I reluctantly pulled back to look at him as his arm's remained resting on my waist.
"It's no secret about your engagement to Prince Kili, and news that the Archer Queen fought in the Battle of Five Armies travelled fast and I heard the news just as I returned to Rivendell to Nanallia. I came here as fast as I could to see you and Caspian again." He grinned. "I missed you, Cass." He sighed as he hugged me again.
"Where is Caspian?" He asked when he pulled away.
"He -" I took a deep breath. "He didn't survive the battle."
"What?" Devlin breathed in shock.
"He jumped in front of me and saved me but he didn't survive." I explained as I held back my tears.
"I'm sorry Cass. I should have been there in the battle. I should've been here to comfort and help you after. I'm sorry." He said as he pulled me to him again in a comforting hug.
"There's no need to be sorry, Devlin. It's okay, I'm okay." I reassured him.
After a moment he pulled back and that's when I remembered the others in the room.
"Guys, I'd like you to meet my cousin, Devlin." I said. "Devlin, this is the company." I smiled.
"Nice to meet you guys. It seems that we'll be related in a month." He grinned at Kili and Fili.
"It seems we will." Fili grinned.
