*Brielle's POV*

"Brielle?!" I heard the distinct sound of my mother's voice ring out through the small village.

I internally groaned in annoyance as I trudged in the direction of our small cottage. I smiled lightly at the other villagers as I passed them, silently wondering what it was that my mother wanted me for.

As I approached our small cottage I could see my mother tending to her vegetable patch whilst her friend, Liah, stood nearby and was chattering away as usual. I rolled my eyes in annoyance as I walked up to my mother and leant against the worn gate.

My mother didn't even look up at me as she tucked a lock of her red hair behind her ear and out of the way of her pale face that had wrinkled with age.

"What's wrong mother? I heard you calling for me." I asked as I sent Liah a small smile when she finally stopped rambling on about Durin knows what.

"Oh yes dear. Could you go and find Adam for me?" She asked when she finally looked up at me. Her blue eyes looking brighter in the sunlight.

"Of course. Where will he be?" I asked.

"He'll be out hunting."

I nodded and walked towards the edge of the forest in search for my cousin, Adam.

I live with my mother and my cousin Adam. My father had died many years ago and I can hardly remember him. My cousin has always lived with us, he hunted for our food and protected my mother and I from any who would want to harm us.

Our village wad hidden deep within the forests near the great dwarf kingdom of Erebor. Recently we had recieved news that the battle of the five armies had been won and our people were planning to travel to Dale to help rebuild it.

I was part dwarf so I felt obliged to help my people in any way I could and I knew the rest of my people felt the same way.

I sighed as I walked through the woods, my dress catching on broken branches as I searched for my cousin.

"Adam!" I yelled as I ducked under a low hanging branch. My blue eyes scanning through the trees in search of him.

"Bree! I'm over here!" I heard Adam's deep voice from my right and smiled upon seeing him.

"Mother sent me to find you." I smiled as I stared at the dead rabbits he held in his hands that he had shot for our dinner.

"I know, I was just on my way back." He replied as he placed his hand on my lower back and began to lead me back to the village.

"Why we're you gone so long?" I asked him as he helped me over a fallen tree.

"I thought I saw something when I was hunting and when I went to investigate it but found nothing. I could've sworn it was an Orc but I don't know... probably just my imagination." He explained to me.

I felt my entire body go tense upon hearing him mention orcs. I hated them, I mean everyone does but orcs killed my father and I had never seen an orc before only heard gruesome stories about those foul creatures.

"An o-orc?" I stuttered in question.

"Don't worry about it. I'm sure it was just an animal or something." He reasurred me.

I nodded and carried on walking when screams could be heard from the village.

Without a second thought Adam dropped the rabbits and sprinted towards the village as I hurried after him.

I could feel my heart pounding as I raced to see what was wrong but when Adam and I made it to the village we immediately wished that we had never gone back.

A swarm of orcs were pillaging the village; they were burning the cottages and huts, taking our livestock but worst of all... they were slaughtering any man, woman and child that they could see.

Adam gripped my hand in a vice grip as he pulled me through the hordes of panicked villagers and towards our own cottage but when we made it I could immediately feel my heart breaking at the sight that lay before me.

The cottage was ruined and was already mostly burnt to a crisp. There was nothing left that we could salvage. But upon seeing the two bodies that lay on the grass before the cottage I could feel the heartbreaking gasp leave my lips as I stared at my mother's dead corpse that was sprawled out beside Liah's.

"Come on we have to go!" I heard Adam yell desperately from beside me.

I nodded numbly and ran after him into the forest, I didn't even notice the tears as they streamed down my cheeks. Only one thought raced through my head as we ran from the orcs, I'm an orphan...

After running for a while we realised that a group of the orcs were now chasing us and it made me even more terrified as they slowly gained on us.

Two orcs managed to tackle Adam who tried to struggle free from their tight grip.

My eyes went wide as I looked around desperately for something I could use to help him.

Luckily I caught sight of his dagger on the ground a few feet away and I immediately dropped to my knees and grabbed it. I held it in front of me defensively as an orc advanced towards me. Without thinking I swung my arm out in an arc and slashed the orc in the chest.

I know I should be relieved to see the orc dead but that was the very first living thing I had ever killed and I still felt guilty for taking a life, no matter how awful the creature was.

I looked back to Adam who had miraculously knocked the two orcs off of him and had quickly sliced their necks just as we caught sight of more orcs in the distance coming right towards us.

"Run!" Adam ordered and without another moments hesitation we sprinted away from the advancing orcs.

We ran for a few more minutes. My breathing was laboured and I already had a stitch in my side.

My gaze snapped up to Adam as he came to a sudden stop. His bow at the ready.

"What are you doing?!" I yelled as I stopped too.

"Giving you some time to get away." He answered stonily.

"WHAT?!" I yelled in shock. "No! No! No! I won't leave you!"

"You have to! Go to the mountain and they will help you!" He ordered with a firm look. "GO!"

I quickly moved towards him and hugged him tightly. "Be careful. Please." I whispered.

"I will. I'll see you at the mountain." He promised.

I nodded and reluctantly turned and ran like he told me and I never stopped running. I could see the mountain looming ahead, the end of the forest wasn't far now. Just as my hopes began to rise I tripped. I felt my head smash against a rock, my vision was blurred as I tried to push myself up off of the floor. I could feel a strange, sticky, warm liquid drip down my face. Just when I realised that it was blood, my blood, my vision had already become cloudy.

I gasped in pain as the darkness began to envelop me. I could hear the sound of distant voices coming towards me just as I allowed myself to embrace the darkness.
