*Cassy's POV*

I hurriedly led our small group through the deserted streets of Laketown towards Bard's home. As soon as we reached the stairs that led to his front door I moved out of the way and allowed Bofur to go first followed by Oin and Fili who were helping Kili up the stairs.

Bofur knocked loudly on the door and a moment later it swung open revealing a worn looking Bard. As soon as he saw Bofur his face darkened. "No." He said. "I've had enough of dwarfs. Go away."

"No! Wait! Please!" Bofur said as he stopped Bard from closing the door. "No one will help us. Kili is sick. Very sick."

Bard looked at Kili who was slumped against Fili and looked on the brink of passing out.

"Please Bard." I said as I moved into his line of sight. His face softened at the sight of me; Bain must have meant it when he said Bard was sorry.

"Get inside quickly." Bard said as he moved out of the way and allowed Fili, Oin and Bofur to help Kili inside. "Put him on the bed."

"Thank you." I said avoiding eye contact with him as I brushed past him.

"Cassandra..." He said trying to get my attention.

"No." I said as I turned to look at him. "We will not discuss this now."

He lowered his head in defeat and closed the door. I dumped all my belongings in the corner of the room before I helped the three dwarfs lift Kili on to the bed.

"Bain fetch some water." Said Bard as he began collecting numerous herbs into a bowl. "Sigrid and Tilda, get some cloth for bandages and some blankets."

I tried to calm Kili down as he released an agonizing scream of pain as Oin stripped the old bandage off of his leg.

I watched as Oin closed his eyes in agitation and pinched the bridge of his nose. "And why didn't you let us see the wound earlier?" He said to Kili. "There is still a shard of the arrow inside, Kili, and it is infected!"

"You promised me that you let Oin look at it." I accused him suddenly feeling angry that he'd lie to me like that.

"I just didn't want to worry you, Cassy." Kili mumbled as he looked at me with a pained expression.

"You didn't want to worry me?! So your master plan was to instead stroll around for days with a fatal wound from a bloody poisoned arrow in your leg and refused to let Oin even see it?!" I snapped causing him to flinch visibly.

"Cassy I-"

"You're reckless and you're out of your mind!" I said.

"Stop." Oin interrupted, pulling me away from the bed. "This is no time for arguments. We must focus on healing him, not yelling at him."

I sighed and moved away from the bed, deciding to help Tilda collect herbs from the kitchen. I couldn't believe him! Why would he choose to lie to me like that? I was honest told not only him but the whole company about Donovan and my past which is something only very few people know and yet he can't even be honest that his injury was hurting him. I sighed again and caught Tilda looking at me worriedly.

"You know the nice dwarf didn't mean to lie to you. He's much nicer than that grumpy one that yelled at Da." Tilda said referring to the argument between Thorin and Bard.

"It's not that simple." I muttered.

"Yes it is," she replied as she looked up at me innocently, "he was just trying not to worry you."

I knew she was right. Slowly my gaze settled on Kili as I took the washed root that Tilda gave me. "Give this to Kili to eat." She told me.

I slowly walked back over to Kili and handed him the root. "Swallow this, it'll help." I said.

"I'm so sorry, Cassy. Please just hear me out." He said desperately.

"Okay. You can explain." I said.

"After everything that has happened over the past few days I didn't want anyone to worry about me. I was trying to prove to my uncle that I was a worthy member of this company. And... after last night's confessions between us I really didn't want to worry you. I'm sorry Cassy, I really am. Please forgive me?" He said as he reached to hold my hand.

I nodded and my features softened, "I'm sorry Kili. I'm just worried about you... I'm even more worried about you now." I said.

"I'm sorry, I should've been honest." He said.

"I forgive you." I whispered as I gave him a small kiss on his cheek. "Just never lie to me again."

"I promise." He smiled.

As soon as steam began to rise from the boiling pot on the stove, Sigrid grabbed it and approached the bed, with Bain following in tow.

Oin was preparing to pull the shard out of the wound. "This will hurt." He warned and then turned to the rest of us. "I need you to hold him down."

I immediately gripped Kili's hand and pushed down on his shoulder whilst Fili did the same on his other side and Bain put pressure on the uninjured leg. Kili screamed in pain as Oin pulled out the shard of arrow before he cleaned the wound with hot water. Oin then juiced a few drops of lemon onto the wet cloth to sterilise the wound.

Bard then appeared next to us and passed a bowl of herbs to Oin. The healer nodded and tried to feed a bit of the roots to Kili. "Chew on this." Oin told Kili, "It will help to numb the pain."

Before Kili could protest I grabbed the smelly root and all but shoved it into Kili's mouth, clapping a hand over to ensure that he would chew on it. Kili made a face at me but began chewing it. I smiled in satisfaction and removed my hand as he swallowed with a grimace of utter disgust.

"We need something to bring down his fever!" Oin said urgently as he pressed a hot compress over the wound.

"I think I might have something." Bard said as he hurried over to his cupboards and pulled out an odd looking herb and added water to it before he mixed it in with the water turning it into a weird looking gloop before it returned to looking like water.

"Excellent." Said Oin as he motioned for Bofur to soak a piece of cloth into the water before he wrung it out and passed it to me.

I pushed the hair out of Kili's eyes with a smile as I gently pressed the wet cloth to his forehead.

I quickly snuck a glance at Kili's injured leg and held back a grimace at the sight of the torn, black flesh. I have seen some truly horrifying injuries in my life; sliced throats, missing limbs, deep infected flesh wounds and I've seen plenty of poisoned arrow wounds, most of which were my own wounds, but I've never seen one get as bad as Kili's leg currently was.

"Does it really look that bad?" Kili mumbled quietly once he saw the look on my face.

"I've seen worse." I replied. I remembered this one dwarf, one of Lord Dain's men, had such a bad infection that the wound turned a horrible black and yellow colour and he ended up having his arm removed to stop the spreading of the infection.

"Really?" He asked obviously doubting my reply.

"I have been in so many battles and I've seen so many horrific injuries, this really isn't the worst." I told him as I continued to dab the cloth along his forehead carefully.

"What was the worst?" He asked.

"It's too disgusting to describe." I replied as I pulled a disgusted face to myself at the thought.

I smiled as Kili chuckled but he stopped abruptly when he let out a loud, pain-filled cry.

"Shh!" I said as I tried to sooth him. I sat down on the bed beside him and rubbed my thumb across his jaw line soothingly.

I looked at Oin and realised that he had just rubbed some kind of herb mixture on to the wound which, if Kili's outcry had anything to do with it, must have stung.

"Mahal have mercy." Kili hissed as he clenched his teeth together in pain.

"Isn't there anything we can do to lessen the pain?" I asked Oin.

"A kiss might help." Kili mumbled. I turned to look at him and lightly hit his shoulder.

"Shut up." I said.

"You asked." Kili chuckled. I continued to run my thumb across his jaw line before I tilted his head and gently placed a chaste kiss to his lips.

"Happy now?" I asked, not moving my face away from his just yet.

"Very." He said before he moved forwards slightly and kissed me.

"I'm going to need you all to hold him down whilst I clean the wound again." Oin said causing Kili and I to reluctantly pull back from the kiss.

We all surrounded Kili and held him down whilst Oin began to clean the injury. Within seconds Kili's pained screams filled the air.
