*Cassy's POV*

We continued to drink and eat the food that the Master provided for our company whilst the people of Laketown played music and celebrated our company's arrival. The older members of our company; Balin and Oin decided to rest their sore limbs instead of joining in with the festivities. The Master had assigned our company a large guest house for us to stay in; we were each given our own room. We were also given new clothes, armour, more weapons, and tomorrow morning we were to be given a boat so that we could cross the lake and reach the Lonely Mountain.

I tried not to drink too much but certain individuals in our company had other ideas. Fili was currently attempting to do a handstand but kept falling over and giggling madly to himself. Dwalin seemed to grin to himself before he poured a bucket of ice cold water over Fili causing him to shriek and then giggle.

Things carried on like that for a while until I got bored. I looked around at the rest of the company; most were drunk or passed out but I realised that Kili and Fili were nowhere to be seen. I stood up and walked over to a still, slightly sober Ori.

"Ori? Have you seen Fili and Kili?" I asked.

"Nooppee. I tink they went inta the ouse." He slurred. I could only just understand what he said and quickly thanked him before I decided to go to the house myself.

I pushed my way through the crowds of people until I reached the door to the house. It was unlocked so I walked straight in and up to the room that was assigned to me. There was a pile of fresh clothes and armour on the bed along with my weapons, there was also extra daggers added to my own weapons. I walked over to the bed, closing the door behind me and saw that I had been given clothes to sleep in and a bath of hot water had been prepared so that I could clean myself.

I quickly undressed and climbed into the tub; I washed the grime from my hair, face, neck and body before I climbed out of the tub, wrapping a towel around me as I did. I dried myself before I pulled on the oversized nightshirt and baggy trousers that I had been given but left my feet bare. I left my hair down in its damp curly state and walked out of my room and down the corridor towards Kili's room; I was worried about him, I knew that his leg was affecting him but he was too stubborn to say anything.

I saw that the light in his room was still lit so I presumed that he was still awake. I didn't bother knocking just in case he was sleeping so I quietly opened the door and peeked inside the room. Fili was propped up in a chair at the foot of Kili's bed whilst the dark haired dwarf laid in the bed fast asleep.

"Hello Cassy." Fili whispered as he gestured for me to come inside. He seemed to have sobered down quite a lot from before.

"How is he?" I asked keeping my voice low.

"Not good. He says he's fine but he can't even move without hurting his leg." Fili replied worriedly.

I walked over to the bed and sat down on the floor near Fili's chair. "He's too stubborn to admit how much it hurts." I said.

"Aye. That'd be true." Fili said as he looked at his brother with a small smile.

"Fili?" I whispered causing him to look away from his sleeping brother and down at me.

"Yeah?"

"I'm worried about him. I fear that the arrow that pierced his leg was not an ordinary arrow." I said.

"What do you mean?" Fili asked.

"Orcs and Goblins tend to cover the blades of their swords and daggers with poison. They also lace the tips of their arrows with the same poison." I said.

"Poison?" Said Fili as he sat forward in the chair listening intently to what I was saying.

"They use poison so that if they hit their target but don't kill them the poison would make them weak enough to kill or they would just allow the poison to slowly kill their victim. It can take days for the poison to actually kill the victim but once the poison gets into the bloodstream it slowly moves towards the person's heart and will kill them unless the injury is treated. I've been hit plenty of times with arrows; some poisoned and some ordinary. I've only known the elves to be able to take the poison out of a person's system, so if the arrow that hit Kili was laced with poison then only the elves will be able to save him." I explained, Fili's expression became increasingly worried as he then directed his gaze at his brother.

I finally noticed how tired and worn out Fili looked. I stood up and gently pulled him out of the chair so that he was standing up. "Go and get some sleep whilst you have the chance, I'll stay here and watch him." I whispered.

"Are you sure?" He asked.

"I wouldn't be able to sleep anyway. I'll wake you if anything changes in his condition, I promise." I replied.

He surprised me and pulled me into a fierce hug so that my face was pressed against his shoulder, I hugged him back tightly feeling like I was hugging Caspian. "Thank you, muinthen nín." He muttered into my still damp hair. I smiled at him when I pulled away as he put one hand on the back of my head and gently knocked our foreheads together. My smile widened as he turned and walked towards the door. My father used to knock his forehead against mine, I had learnt that it was a sign of affection amongst dwarfs so I was honoured that Fili felt close enough to me to do that.

"Fili? What does 'muinthen nín' mean?" I asked referring to when he thanked me.

"My sister." He replied with a smile before he silently left the room.

I stood there for a moment just smiling at what he said. Did he really think of me as a sister? Caspian was the only real family I had and the thought of Fili being another brother to me, even if we weren't related by blood, made me so happy.

I silently walked over to Kili's sleeping form and brushed back the strands of hair from his forehead before I leant over him and gently brushed my lips against his forehead. I couldn't help but smile when the corners of his lips curled upwards in a smile whilst he slept.

I walked over to the window and looked out at the moon that looked as though it was glowing in the night sky. I continued to gaze out of the window as I began to hum my mother's lullaby that I had hummed back in Mirkwood whilst Kili was sleeping.

*Kili's POV*

I fought to open my eyes at the sound of a familiar tune. I turned my head and saw Cassy staring out of the window as she hummed the same lullaby that she had back in Mirkwood. It was beautiful, she was beautiful. The way the pale light of the moon illuminated her face made her look like an angel, even more so than normal.

"What song is that?" I asked causing Cassy to jump in shock and turn to face me as I sat up in my bed, wincing involuntarily from the pain in my leg.

"How long have you been awake?" She asked.

"Only for a moment." I replied with a smile.

She returned my smile and walked over to me before she sat down on the edge of my bed. "How are you feeling?" She asked as she gently held my hand in her's.

"I'm fine." I said. "I'm just a little sore." I knew she didn't believe that I was 'fine', I knew that I wasn't but I didn't want to worry everyone.

"Kili -" She started but I interrupted her.

"I said I'm fine!" I said much harsher than I had intended. "I'm sorry, I -"

"It's alright." She replied with a smile. "It's just that I'm worried about you, Kili. You're in pain, you're pale, your breathing is a lot heavier than usual... can you just promise me that you'll let Oin have a quick look at it in the morning?"

"I promise." I said.

"Thank you." She said as she kissed my cheek. "You should go back to sleep."

"Okay but you still haven't answered my question." I said. "What song were you humming?"

"It was a lullaby that my mother used to sing to Caspian and I when we were children. Once she died I had to hum the tune to myself just so I'd fall asleep." She said smiling slightly.

"You never hummed it during the quest apart from in Mirkwood." I said.

"Well... um... truthfully I never had to because... because I always slept beside you." She said as a light blush covered her cheeks.

"What? Are you saying that I help you sleep peacefully?" I asked with a slight smirk.

"I don't know...Yes... It's just that whenever I'm around you I feel... safe and protected. I mean Caspian makes me feel protected but it's different with you... It's like I can sense that you wouldn't let anything happen to me. I know I don't really need protection but I guess that... I... Oh stuff it! I like you, Kili! I like you a lot." She said looking me directly in the eyes before she shook her head and smiled. "No! I don't just like you! I'm in love with you, Kili! I have been for a while now."

I released a relieved breath that I didn't know I had been holding before I wrapped one arm around her tightly and pulled her towards me with one strong move until she was pressed against my front. All the pain in my leg was forgotten as I brought her face closer to my own, smilingly pressing a small kiss to her cheek. I would never have thought that those words could make me so happy. My heart thumped excitedly in my chest and I could only just keep myself from bursting out laughing with joy as I buried my face in her damp hair. My One loved me. Cassy loved me.

"You're in love with me?" I whispered into her hair with a smile and she nodded. I pulled back so that my forehead was resting against her's. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to hear you say those words. I've been in love with you since the moment we met, I just didn't realise it until later. I didn't know how you felt and I was too scared to tell you how I feel. I love you, Cassandra." I said as I watched her smile widen. I reached up and pulled her towards me and pressed my lips against her's. Her arms wrapped around my shoulders as she deepened the kiss whilst one of my hands gently ran down her back while the other held her face close to mine.

When she eventually pulled back I opened my eyes to see her smiling at me. "I could get used to this." She sighed as she rested her forehead against mine again.

"You better," I murmured as I gently brushed my lips against her's and then pressed a short kiss to them, "because you're mine now. I have wasted too much time as it is denying my feelings and now that I have told you, I intend to kiss you a lot more. I love you Cassy, my love, my One." I said which caused her eyes to snap open. I just realised that I admitted that she is my One.

"How long have you known that I was your One?" She whispered.

"Since Mirkwood, when we were talking about a dwarf's One. It took both Fili and Caspian to make me realise it but I guess that I've always known. I was just too scared to see your reaction, in case you didn't feel the same way." I admitted. She smiled, raising her hand and softly pressing it to my cheek and letting her fingers trail over my stubble before she nodded quietly.

"I've always been yours, Kili. I always will be yours." She said with a loving smile. "I just needed some time to realise it." I couldn't stop the grin that formed on my face as I suddenly leant forward and buried my face in the curve of her neck, hugging her close to me. I felt Cassy shudder slightly at the feeling of my stubble rubbing against her collarbone as I pressed a light kiss on her skin there.

"We both took a long time to realise it." I muttered before I unintentionally yawned causing Cassy to laugh. I smiled without realising; her laugh was beautiful and it made her face light up.

"Lay down and get some sleep." She ordered as she carefully pushed me back down so that I was laid in the bed as she pulled the blankets over me. She turned to leave but I quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her back on to the bed. "Not even a goodnight kiss?" I asked her with a smirk. She leaned down and kissed me but when she pulled away I scooted over in the bed and pulled her so the she was laid against my chest.

"Seeing as though sleeping beside me helps you sleep you might as well stay." I said as I kissed her forehead.

"Goodnight, Kili." She laughed as she snuggled closer to me as I wrapped my arms around her protectively.

"I love you so much." I muttered into her hair.

"I love you too." She replied before we fell asleep in each other's arms. I've never felt so happy in my life.
