Chapter 3. The Wargs and an Arrow.

We followed a trail of troll foot prints towards an opening to what looked like a cave. As we got closer a foul smell reached my nose which caused me to gag. I hastily covered my mouth and nose with my hands. Everyone else was doing the same.

"Well, at least we know that we've found the trolls cave." I said.

"Dwalin, Nori, Gloin, Bofur and Gandalf you will come inside the cave with me. The rest of you will wait out here." Said Thorin. Thank god! I do not want to go anywhere nearer to that god awful smell!

I sat down on top of a large boulder as we waited for Thorin and the others to come back out of the cave. Well, that's if they don't suffocate from the smell whilst they're in there. I looked up when I felt someone sit down on the boulder beside me.

"You know I've just realised something." Said Kili.

"And what's that?" I asked.

"That we haven't had our little archery competition yet." He replied grinning at me.

"Oh yeah. I nearly forgot about that." I said smiling. "Next time we make camp we will have the competition."

"I look forward to it." He replied smiling.

"Lets go!" Said Thorin as he walked out of the cave carrying... an Elven sword?! I wonder how an Elven sword made its way into a troll hoard.

Kili jumped down from the boulder before offering me his hand to help me down. I smiled before I reached for his hand and slid off of the boulder with his help.

"Something's coming!" Yelled Thorin. He was right! Using my Elf hearing I could hear what I thought was a sleigh or something coming straight in our direction. We all followed Thorin who led us into the woods and towards the sound of the sled.

"Thieves! Fire! Murder!" Shouted an all too familiar voice as Radagast the Brown hurtled through some bushes on his sled (that was being pulled by rabbits) and came to a stop straight in front of us.

"Radagast!" I said happily.

"Cassy? It's good to see you again, dear!" He said when he saw me.

"Yeah it's good to see you too." I said.

"And Gandalf!" Said Radagast when he caught sight of the grey wizard.

"What on earth are you doing here?" Asked Gandalf.

"I was looking for you, Gandalf!" Said Radagast. "There's something wrong! There's something terribly wrong!"

"Yes?" Asked Gandalf.

"I... uh... wait a moment. Argh! I had a thought and now it's gone! It was right there on the tip of my tongue!" Said Radagast. "Wait it wasn't a thought at all! It was a stick insect." Radagast stuck his tongue out and on his tongue was a stick insect. Yep! He's still weird!

Gandalf pulled Radagast away to talk in private whilst the rest of us just stood around and talked amongst ourselves.

"Ha! I knew there was something going on!" Said Fili pointing at Kili and I.

"What are you on about?" I asked not knowing what he was talking about.

"If there wasn't anything going on between the two of you then explain why your holding hands." Said Fili. I looked down and sure enough Kili and I were still holding hands from when he helped me down from the boulder. I quickly let go of Kili's hand and both Kili and I started blushing which caused Fili to laugh. Suddenly there was a howl from nearby which caused everyone to become silent.

"Was that a wolf? Are there wolves out there?" Asked Bilbo looking frightened.

"That is no wolf." Said Bofur.

My Elf vision caught sight of a warg stood on top of a rock ready to pounce at us. I quickly grabbed my bow and notched an arrow before shooting the warg in the eye causing it to fall to the ground next to Dwalin who finished it off using his axe. Suddenly another warg came pouncing down from behind Thorin but luckily Kili managed to shoot it down. He was quite a good shot.

"Nice shot." I told him.

"I said I was good." He replied grinning.

"Yes, but I'm better." I said winking at him.

"Warg scouts!" Said Thorin. "That means an orc pack is not far behind!"

"Orc pack?!" Asked Bilbo. Aww! Bless him he looked so worried.

"Who did you tell of your quest apart from your kin?" Asked Gandalf.

"No one!" Replied Thorin.

"Who did you tell?!" Asked Gandalf.

"No one I swear!" Said Thorin. "What in Durin's name is going on?!"

"You are being hunted!" Said Gandalf.

"We need to get out of here!" Said Dwalin. Oh good idea! I don't think anyone else was thinking of that! But thank you for that bit of information!

"We can't! We have no ponies! They bolted!" Said Nori.

"I'll divert them away." Said Radagast. Was he insane?!

"They are wargs! They will outrun you in seconds!" Argued Gandalf.

"These are ruscabell rabbits! I'd like to see them try!" Replied Radagast. Yep! Definitely still the crazy fool I remember him to be! We heard the howls get closer and finally Gandalf agreed with Radagast. We watched as Radagast hopped on to his wooden sled and hurtled off through the trees.

"Follow me!" Said Gandalf. We followed him out of the trees and out on to a large open area where the only places to hide were behind these incredibly large rocks that were dotted all over the place.

We hid behind the first rock and waited as Radagast led the wargs away from us. "Quickly!" Said Gandalf as we ran from behind one rock to another. We ran again and again as Radagast made the wargs chase him from one area of the rocks to another. A few times we came close to being spotted but luckily we didn't. "Ori no!" Said Thorin who pulled Ori back from moving out from behind the rock we were currently hiding behind. Once the coast was clear Gandalf led us to another rock. We hid behind the rock and to our horror one of the wargs had jumped up on to the top of the rock that we were hiding behind. I could sense that this one had a rider which made it much worse. Thorin nodded to Kili who notched an arrow before stepping out from the safety of the rock before shooting the warg. Oops! Big mistake! The warg and orc howled and yelled which caught the attention of the other wargs. Dwalin and Gloin finished the orc and warg off using their axes and sword.

"Move! RUN!" Yelled Gandalf as the wargs began to run towards us.

Kili grabbed my hand and pulled me along with the others. I pushed my legs to go faster and to keep up with Kili which I luckily managed to do. We were being surrounded now and I could see more coming! We stopped running when we realised that there was no where else to run and the wargs were slowly closing in around us.

"Kili! Cassandra! Shoot them!" Ordered Thorin.

Kili reluctantly released my hand so we could fight. I grabbed by bow and began to shoot any orcs or wargs that got too close whilst Kili did the same. I looked around and shot another warg when I heard someone ask where Gandalf was then I realised that he was no where to be seen. I quickly shot a warg in the eye as it tried to get Balin before shooting the orc that was riding on its back.

"This way you fools!" Shouted Gandalf as he popped up from a gap in a rock. Gandalf must've found a secret passageway or something. Everyone started running in the direction of the rock but Kili and I just started walking backwards towards it whilst still shooting the wargs.

"Everyone in! Quickly!" Shouted Thorin as one by one the dwarfs jumped down through the gap, disappearing from sight. "Kili! Cassandra! Hurry!" Shouted Thorin which caused Kili to turn to look at him. What happened next went by in a blur. I caught sight of an orc aiming an arrow straight at Kili's back and before I could warn him the orc already released the arrow. So following my instincts I pushed Kili out of the way but unfortunately for myself I didn't move out of the way of the arrow quick enough. I cried out in pain as the arrow pierced the right side of my torso, thinking from experience I quickly broke the shaft of the arrow but left part of it still sticking out of me.

"Cassy!" Said Kili as he jumped up eyes going wide when he saw blood seeping through my shirt.

"Come on!" I said as I grabbed his hand and pulled him towards Thorin. I tried to ignore the searing pain in my side where the arrow still was as we ran. We made it to Thorin and Kili and I both jumped down the gap followed by Thorin. I tried to stand up but my legs couldn't take the pain anymore so I fell back over but before I could hit the ground Kili had wrapped his arms around me to stop me falling. He carefully sat me on the ground letting me lean against him.

"What happened?!" Asked Dori pointing to my blood soaked shirt.

"She pushed me out of the way of an arrow and was shot by the arrow instead." Said Kili worriedly as he began stroking my hair out of my eyes.

"I'm okay." I insisted.

"No your not! You need help!" Said Fili who kneeled down on my other side.

I was about to protest when a horn sounded from outside the passage. I could tell it was Elvish by the elegant sound it made and I could also hear the orcs yelling. One orc rolled down into the passage with an arrow pierced through his chest. Thorin pulled the arrow out of the orc and looked at it before throwing it back to the ground, "Elves." He said in disgust.

"I can't see where the pathway leads. Do we follow it?" Asked Dwalin.

"Of course we follow it!" Said Oin.

I winced as I tried to stand up and without warning Kili carefully slid one of his arms under my legs whilst his other arm wrapped around my waist as he picked me up. I smiled at him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

"Thank you." I whispered.

"I should be the one thanking you. You saved my life." He replied.

"Your life is worth saving." I said. I reached up and kissed his cheek before I rested my head on his shoulder and allowed him to carry me after the others who were walking down the passageway. I buried my face into the crook of Kili's neck and breathed in Kili's scent, he smelt of a mixture of leather, cinnamon and smoke which combined smelt quite nice. I could feel my eyes begin to get heavy now but as soon as I closed them Kili just shook me.

"No, Cassy. Don't go to sleep, you have to stay awake!" He said I don't know if it was because I had lost a lot of blood but I swear that Kili had tears in his eyes. I nodded in reply and looked down at my injury which was bleeding a lot now. I looked up and saw that we were finally outside of the passageway. I recognised the city that was in front of us, it was Rivendell. I cried out slightly when an intense pain shot through my wound.

"It's okay, Cassy. Your going to be okay." Said Kili before he kissed the top of my head.

"It hurts." I said through gritted teeth.

"I won't let anything happen to you. I promise." He replied. I smiled weakly at him as he began to follow the others down towards Rivendell.

"Thank you, Kili." I replied. "You're probably the nicest man I've ever met."

"You're definitely the most amazing woman I've ever met in all my life." He said.

I started to have trouble breathing now and I think Kili had realised as well because he told the others to walk faster. We finally walked past two towering stone statues that led to a small courtyard facing the main building in Rivendell. We all stood in a group with Kili still carrying me whilst Gandalf stood nearest to the stairs waiting to be greeted by an Elf. Lindir, a dark haired Elf decended the stairs and spoke to Gandalf in Elvish. I could feel the dwarfs tense up slightly in the presence of Lindir. Gandalf asked to see Lord Elrond but Lindir said that Elrond wasn't there at the moment.

Everyone turned at the sound of horses and saw a group of Elves riding horses straight towards us and within second they had formed a tight circle around us. Lord Elrond dismounted his horse and began to speak to Gandalf. My vision was becoming very blurry now so I wasn't really able to listen to what Gandalf and Lord Elrond were saying.

"What happened?" Asked Lord Elrond when his eyes landed on me in Kili's arms.

"She has been shot by an orc. We were hoping that you would be able to help her." Replied Gandalf.

"Of course I will. She shall be taken to the healers right away." Said Lord Elrond before he motioned for another Elf to come and take me to a healer.

Kili kissed my forehead before he reluctantly passed me over to the Elf. I winced as I was passed to the Elf as the sudden movement caused the arrow to move slightly. I was immediately carried away and as I was being carried my vision began to be very blurred and after a minute everything went black.
