Chapter 15. Into light.

*Kili's POV*

Everything happened so fast. I couldn't even fully register what happened. As soon as the dear knocked into our group, I acted out of instinct and shot it down using my bow. But just before I had shot it I heard a small shriek from the boat followed by two loud splashes.

"No." I whispered hoarsely, my eyes widening when I caught sight of Cassy's pure black hair disappearing beneath the water.

"Bombur!" Bofur shouted, helplessly watching his brother disappear in the dark water as well. Bombur and Cassy must've been knocked into the water.

"Cassandra!" Caspian yelled desperately as he watched the place where his sister had been.

"They have fallen in!" Added Bilbo worriedly.

I felt my heart clench painfully in my chest. I quickly looked around and spotted the rope that Fili was holding. I instinctively grabbed it from his hand and rushed towards the edge of the bank before flinging it into the river as far as I could, trying to aim for the last place I saw Cassy. I began to loose hope when the rope remained limp in my hands. They couldn't drown. I couldn't lose Cassy now, not after everything we've been through.

After what felt like a lifetime, the rope I was holding limply in one hand was tugged powerfully from the middle of the river, almost making me stumble as I tried to get a tighter grip on the rope. I quickly pulled on it with all the strength I could muster. The others quickly came to help and with all our strength combined we managed to pull the rope.

We gasped when we saw a familiar head of jet black hair suddenly emerge from beneath the water. It was Cassy. She had wrapped the rope tightly around her wrist whilst her left arm was busy holding on to Bombur's hood, effectively pulling him to safety with her. We all began pulling on the rope a lot harder and after a few seconds we had pulled Cassy to the edge of the river where she helped Bifur and Bofur get Bombur out of the water first. I ran forwards and wrapped my arms around Cassy's waist and easily pulled her out of the water and laid her on the ground. She gasped suddenly and began coughing up some water that she had swallowed accidentally.

The rest of the company quickly hurried over to us, Bofur and Bifur making sure that their brother and cousin was still alive, but Bombur was sleeping peacefully. The charm on the river must put people into a deep sleep.

"Cassy." I muttered in a mixture of relief and worry, my voice raspy as I looked at her.

She looked up at me and smiled slightly before her eyes suddenly began to lose their focus. I barely had enough time to wrap my arms around her back to keep her head from colliding with the floor as her body went limp in my arms, now she was sleeping just like Bombur was.

I subconsciously pulled her body closer to my chest, running one slightly trembling hand over her cold cheek, the water must've been incredibly cold to make her skin feel this cold. Thank Durin I hadn't lost her. She wasn't dead, just asleep, unfortunately we have no idea how long Cassy and Bombur will be sleeping for. I released the breath I didn't know I had been holding, and smiled in relief. Fili crouched down beside me and looked relieved when he saw she was sleeping peacefully just like Bombur. Caspian looked incredibly shaken at nearly loosing his twin sister and I couldn't blame him.

We all remained on the riverbank for a long time, all of us trying to recover from the shock whilst Bombur and Cassy slept on. I looked down at Cassy who was still laid in my lap, lazily and almost subconsciously running my fingers through her dark hair that was drying slowly.

"We need to get back on the path. We cannot remain here, it may become dark soon." Thorin eventually announced, getting to his feet.

"What about the two of them?" Fili asked from where he was sitting right next to me as he indicated to the two sleeping members of our company.

"We will have to carry them." Said uncle. "There's no choice, we cannot stay here and wait for them to wake up. Beorn told us this stream carries strong magic, it could take hours until they wake, maybe even days. Bifur, Bofur, Oin and Gloin you will take the first shift in carrying Bombur. We will switch in an hour."

Everyone began getting up off of the floor and collected up their belongings. Caspian and Fili grabbed Cassy's bags whilst I carefully picked up Cassy, I wrapped one arm around her waist and the other under her legs whilst she unconsciously wrapped her arms around my neck and rested her head in the crook of my neck. I smirked to myself and began to follow the others as Thorin led us down the path and away from the river.

*Cassy's POV*

"Cassy." Muttered Kili, his voice quite raspy.

I smiled up at him and tried to fight the urge to close my eyes. I was so tired. My vision suddenly became blurry and the last thing I felt was Kili wrapping his arms around my back before everything went black.

I could tell that I was asleep, everything was dark but it was a comfortable kind of dark. Suddenly a light appeared and emitted a low glow, effectively stopping the darkness. I glanced around and saw that I was in a forest, it felt strange. It was like I knew this place, like I've been here before. Without thinking, I began to walk further into the forest and towards the light. This all felt natural to me. I was holding my famous black elven bow, and I was wearing my usual hunting gear and cloak. It was like what my life was like before I met Lord Dain.

I carried on walking deeper into the forest until I reached a clearing. A beautiful stag appeared and began eating the grass. Out of instinct I silently pulled an arrow from my quiver and notched it on to my bow before I took aim at the creature. Before I could release the arrow I heard whispers. I looked behind me, wondering where the voices had come from but when I turned back to the stag it was no longer there and I was no longer standing in the clearing. Instead I was stood in a village, I smiled at the scene in front of me. I recognised the place, it was my village, the village that I was born in. My mother and father were sat under their favourite willow tree having a picnic, I would've been out hunting or practicing archery whilst Caspian would've been out riding his horse. Speaking of my bother, he ran over to me and I was just about to hug him when he went right through me instead. My smile changed into a confused frown when suddenly the scene changed again.

I looked around at the new scenery and realised that I was stood on top of the Carrock, the exact place where the eagles had taken us after they rescued us from the orcs. I was alone, well at least I thought I was until I heard a voice.

"Cassy?" I recognised that voice but I couldn't place it.

"Who's there?" I said as I looked around but found nothing.

"Do not worry. You will wake up soon. I promise." Said the voice. I deep frown formed on my face.

"How do you know?" I asked. I felt strange talking to nothing but a voice.

"Because you don't belong here anymore. You are no longer the lone assassin that wonders Middle Earth fighting orcs, you are one of us, one of our company." Said the voice.

I turned around and came face to face with a familiar, good looking dwarf. He raised one hand and placed it on my cheek, I was slightly shocked at how warm his skin was. A small smile formed on his face as he stroked my cheekbone on his thumb. "You're my Cassy, my Archer Queen. Please come back to me." He said.

"Kili..." I replied. When suddenly he began to fade before my eyes. My eyes widened and I instinctively reached out to grab him by his tunic but instead of my hand meeting the material of his tunic all I felt was air.

*Kili's POV*

"Kili..." I thought I'd imagined it at first as I looked down at Cassy in my arms. I knew she said something, I felt her speak against my neck. I waited with baited breath for her to say something else but she didn't. I sighed and continued to follow the others.

It had been nearly a week since Cassy and Bombur had been placed into an enchanted sleep. Luckily Bombur had woken up a few hours ago and uncle suspects that she will soon follow. I really hoped he was right.

"We will camp here for the night." Said Thorin as we stopped at another area of the path.

Everyone began to unpack their bedrolls and laid down. Fili placed my bedroll on the floor and I gently placed Cassy's sleeping form on it before I covered her with my blanket.

"Kili, you will take first watch." Said my uncle. I nodded and sat down beside Cassy.

After a few minutes everyone was already sleeping. I sighed when I heard my stomach growl. I hadn't eaten since yesterday, none of us had. Our rations had ran out yesterday. No matter how much we rationed the food it just wasn't enough. Uncle made Bilbo climb up a tree the other day to see how far away the edge of the forest was. Unfortunately for us the end of the forest was nowhere in sight.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my small black stone that I had shown Cassy the day before we entered the forest. I smiled to myself as I remembered when my mother gave me it. I really missed her, I couldn't imagine what Cassy and Caspian must have gone through to lose both of their parents. I placed the stone safely back into my pocket before I heard a quiet groan from beside me.

My gaze snapped up and I looked towards the sound when I realised it had been Cassy. She was still sleeping but she had a deep frown on her face and her fists were clenched. She looked like she was having a nightmare. Considering no one else was awake I quietly moved so that I was laid down before I gently lifted Cassy so that she was laid against my chest whilst I wrapped my arms around her protectively. I smiled when she immediately relaxed and smiled in her sleep, she looked so peaceful.

"Kili..." She muttered. I looked down at her and to my surprise her eyes fluttered open. She was awake!

"Cassy? You're awake!" I whispered happily as we both sat up.

"What happened? The last thing I remember was falling into the river and then being pulled out by you." She said.

"The river had a charm on it so when you fell in, you and Bombur were put into an enchanted sleep." I explained.

"How long was I asleep?" Asked Cassy.

"Around a week." I said.

"Seriously? It only felt like a few hours for me." She said.

"Yeah thats what Bombur said. By the way when Bombur woke up he said that he dreamed about food and his family. What did you dream about?" I asked. Balin suspected that the charm on the river makes people dream of something or someone they care about.

"Well, at first I dreamt that I was hunting in the forests like I used to before I became Lord Dain's bodyguard, then I dreamt about my parents, Caspian and my village. And then, I... um... I dreamt about you." My eyes widened slightly and I began to smirk.

"Oh really?" I said. I felt quite happy knowing that she had been dreaming about me, and if what Balin said was true that means she cares about me which made my heart swell happily.

"Oh shut up." Said Cassy as she playfully pushed me back.

"I'm glad your finally awake." I said without thinking.

"Me too." She said before she reached up and kissed me on the cheek. "Now go to sleep. I'll take watch tonight."

"What? Why?" I replied.

"I've had nearly a week of sleeping. I think you deserve some rest now." She said smiling at me.

"Whatever you say. Goodnight." I said before I smiled and laid down on my bedroll. After a few minutes of trying to get to sleep I heard Cassy begin to hum a song. It sounded beautiful and within minutes I was sleeping peacefully beside her.
