Chapter Two

The very next morning, after a night's rest, Ellis was first one up. Right away, he changed into the clean clothes he'd found last night in the dresser.

After he got changed, Ellis threw his cap on, grabbed his Dual Pistols and reloaded his AK-47 and put it back down on the bed for when he would need it again. Ellis strolled out of his room and peeked into Nick's room to see if he was still sleeping; he was. Ellis didn't want to disturb Nick, so he walked out onto the front porch and stood guard.

"I hope Nick is doing okay with his injuries." Ellis mumbled to himself.

Ellis stretched a little before seeing a few zombies wandering about. None of them seemed to see Ellis, but with the amount of blood on their faces and clothes, they sure did a lot of murder to this neighborhood.

About an hour later, Ellis was still on guard; he heard a few zombies in the distance fighting each other for a decaying animal body. Ellis left the porch to see what all the noise was, he sat up against an abandoned car and peeked around the corner of it. He saw two male zombies fighting each other with violent hits and bites on each other's arms. Ellis rose to his feet and rose his pistols into the air and shot both zombies in the temples; killing them both. Ellis then lowered his pistols and wiped his forehead gently while walking back to the porch. Once he got back up on the porch, he once again stood guard for any zombies or strange noises.

Nick awoke to the sound of Ellis' pistols going off. He slowly got out of bed and changed into his still dampened, bloody, white suit so he wouldn't make his clean one bloody too from his patched up claw wounds, which could open up at anytime.

"Having fun out here?" Nick spoke as he went to the front door and leaned on the rim of the opening.

Ellis flinched when he heard Nick speak to him; he put his Dual Pistols back into their side holders. Ellis then faced Nick with a scowl upon his face and began to tap his foot impatiently.

"I've been out here since dawn, Nick." Ellis sighed as he crossed his arms.

"I see that. You look exhausted; did you get any sleep at all?" Nick smirked.

"Yeah, I guess I was just sore when I came outside." Ellis brightened a little after seeing Nick smirk.

"You were sore down there? Get an aftershock?" Nick chuckled as he pointed to Ellis' crotch.

Ellis just shrugged and sat down in a chair that was on the front porch. Nick stretched his arms out in front of himself to stretch his muscles.

"How are your wounds, Nick?" Ellis asked calmly,

Nick shrugged, "Eh, they're alright, I guess. Still sore, but not as much as they were when I was sleeping."

"Well, we have pain pills in the first aid kit, you can take some of those, if you want." Ellis suggested.

Nick gave a nod and sat down in a chair that was next to Ellis. Nick got his Magnum from his holster on his side and began twirling it around; he then made it stop and a shot a zombie between the eyes; it fell to the ground and fell limp.

Ellis laid his hand on his cheek and just realized he had a bandage on his cheek from falling on the ground yesterday while being chased by a Tank. He moved his blue-eyed gaze toward Nick, but Nick didn't return his gaze to Ellis; Nick was just looking around the area for zombies, probably.

"Sooo, are you hungry at all, Nick?" Ellis offered.

Nick shrugged. "Not really. Just feel like getting back up on my feet, but I can't with these damned claw wounds." Nick said as he began to frown.

"Aw, cheer up, Nick. You'll be your bossy self in no time." Ellis chuckled and began to give a little smile.

"Psssh, please, Ellis. I'm always bossy, my attitude never changes. Even if a girl was still in our group, my attitude wouldn't change." Nick gave a fake smile to his comment. He still missed Rochelle and he wished his attitude would change one day if another girl would one day come back into the group.

Ellis just looked away and looked around the area. It was extremely quiet now since all the zombies that had been there were dead now.

Suddenly, a faint cough was heard and Nick was the first to stand up out of his seat and grabbed his Magnum from his lap. Ellis looked up at Nick, but Nick didn't meet with his blue-eyed gaze, once again.

"Did you hear that, Ellis?" Nick questioned.

"Hear what? I didn't hear anything." Ellis shrugged as he rolled his eyes in confusion.

"That cough, Ellis. It was a damn Smoker!" Nick said as he lowered his tone of voice.

Ellis looked at Nick, and this time, Nick met Ellis' blue-eyed gaze and Ellis met Nick's green-eyed gaze. This time, they both heard the cough again, but this time it was louder. Ellis then flicked his head to the right side of the street, hearing a Hunter growl. This signaled that the two special infected weren't alone. Soon a horde may come and ambush Nick and Ellis.

"Now there is a damn Hunter too? What the fuck is going on here?" Nick hissed.

Ellis stood up out of his chair and got his pistols out of there holders. He held his pistols in the air, hearing the horde cry, both Nick and Ellis held their ground when many zombies came from the corners of their eyes.

"Nick, we have to get our guns from inside!" Ellis yelled as he punched a zombie in the jaw to get it away from him.

"You think I don't know that already, Ellis?" Nick yelled back to Ellis as the zombies began to surrounded them.

Ellis reached for a pipe bomb from the back pocket of his tan pants and threw it into the street.

"Fire in the hole!" Ellis yelled.

All the zombies began running towards the beeping pipe bomb that rapidly increased in sound; then a few moments later all the zombies had exploded into millions of little pieces of guts and blood rained down from the explosion.

The horde of zombies was now a small group and they were all killed with in a matter of seconds.

The Smoker made a loud cough noise and snatched Ellis right off the porch with his slimy, long tongue. He dragged Ellis to him and began hitting and strangling him with its tongue.

"Nick! Help!" Ellis yelled as he gasped for breath.

Nick ran off the porch and shuffed the Smoker to make him let go of Ellis; he did. The Smoker stood for a second before limping off, but Nick shot him three times before a puff of smoke came from the Smoker as he fell to the ground.

"Thanks, Nick." Ellis panted and gasped for breath.

"No problem." Nick replied as he reloaded his Magnum and put it back in its holder.

Both Nick and Ellis began walking back to the porch, when Ellis turned around and shot a Hunter in the head that was making a lot growling noises; it fell to ground when it was in mid-leap.

Nick gave a nod to Ellis and walked back to house; Ellis followed close behind him.

A few days later. . .

Nick and Ellis were once again traveling the abandoned streets and killing zombies, most of all, looking for survivors.

Nick's injuries were slowly closing up successfully. Ellis' scratches were healing quite well too. Both Nick and Ellis had found backpacks to carry a change of clothes to change into every week or so. Ellis had still been wearing the pale blue short sleeve shirt and tan pants and had packed his original clothes he wore before in his bag. Nick had washed his bloody suit and put on the clean one. Nick also packed a red and deep blue undershirts with him.

"Nick, do you know where we are now?" Ellis asked.

Nick shrugged."Still in West Virginia, I think."

"Oh, okay." Ellis replied.

Suddenly, Nick stopped and looked over his shoulder and looked at the two rows of abandoned houses on the sides of the streets. He heard a faint crying sound.

"Ellis, do you hear that?" Nick whispered.

"That cry? Yeah I heard it. Do you think it's a Witch?" Ellis questioned.

Nick shrugged. "I don't think so. It's a different cry, not a Witch cry."

"Wanna go check it out?" Ellis suggested.

"Well duh, Ellis. Come on." Nick replied rudely.

Ellis sighed and followed Nick to the right side of abandoned houses that were close to the woods.

The crying was a little louder, but it was not a Witch cry. This crying had emotion in it and was softer in feeling. Nick listened carefully for what house he could hear the crying at; he pointed to a white wooded house that had lots of blood on the outside of the door. Ellis held his AK-47 flash light into the dark house.

When Nick and Ellis walked into the house, it was pitch black in there, and it was in the middle of the day and sun was really bright. But, nothing but darkness was shed across the inside of this house. Nick looked down at the floor and saw lots of blood and bodies. Nick's eyes widened when he noticed most of these bodies were Hunters.

"What was going on in this house?" Nick whispered.

Ellis looked at Nick. "I don't know, Nick."

Suddenly, both Nick and Ellis flinched when they heard the crying again. This time for sure, it was not a Witch; the crying was louder but was still quiet.

Nick and Ellis cousiously walked through a small hallway and both of them gazed upon two dead bodies laying up against the wall. A woman and man were laying motionless on the floor; still freshly bleeding.

"Holy shit. We were too late to save them from their fate." Ellis sighed in emotion as he respectfully dipped his head in memory for these two people.

"That's a damn shame." Nick sighed as he turned his head away.

The crying was louder now, it meant they were close to who was crying. Nick held his Assult Rifle in the air and Ellis held his AK in the air as well. Nick slowly opened a white a door to find a room that was bloodier than the hallway. Nick and Ellis' eyes widened but they crept into the room slowly.

"Hello? Anyone in here? We aren't infected." Ellis spoke at last.

"If you're in here, show us where you are." Nick spoke calmly.

A closet door slowly peeked opened, Nick crept over and kneeled down in front of the door. He opened the door the rest of the way and shined his flashlight in the closet to find a girl sitting in the back of the closet with her head tucked in a dark hoodie.

"Can you please come out? We won't hurt you. We are here to help." Ellis spoke for Nick.

Nick was speechless to find a young girl still alive. He stepped aside so the girl could come out of her hiding spot. She crawled out and sat against the wall, her body trembling harshly.

"Are you hurt?" Ellis asked calmly.

The girl lowered her hood and shook her head.

"What is your name?" Ellis asked.

She hesitated at first. But she finally spoke. "M. . . .Maya."

"Well, Maya, how long have you been here by yourself?" Ellis questioned.

This time she refused to speak, she lowered her head so that her layered bangs covered her eyes. Ellis looked at Nick in confusion and gave him a hand gesture to talk to her. Nick sighed but he finally gave into speaking to her.

"Look, kid. You have to talk or we are going to leave you behind to die." Nick spoke viciously.

"Nick!" Ellis spoke angrily.

"No, don't leave me here with. . .those things here. They'll kill me!" Maya panicked as she quickly crawled to Nick and grasped him tightly.

"Kid, let me go." Nick said as he made Maya let him go.

"Nick, that's no way to talk to a girl." Ellis scolded him.

Nick gave Ellis a scowl and looked at the girl. Her hair was dark brown like his and it was a little past her chest. She had a dark plaid boy's sweatshirt on and black jeans. Nick frowned at her and he narrowed his eyes.

"If you're so afraid of those zombies coming in here, why don't you kill them?" Nick questioned her.

Maya shrugged. "I'm not allowed to use a gun. I never used one before."

"What about a melee weapon, like an axe or a bat?" Ellis calmly asked.

"I can't lift an axe. And I don't have a bat." Maya answered as she started to put her hood back up.

"Well, here's my question, how old are you, kid?" Nick questioned her as he leaned in front of her.

Maya nervously lowered her head and finally answered in a scared tone. "I'm twelve years old."

Nick and Ellis both looked at each other in shock; for how did a twelve-year-old last this long in a zombie apocalypse? They looked at Maya again; from the looks of it, she was really skinny for her age.

Without warning, Maya winced in pain and grabbed her shoulder. Nick gazed at her in confusion, Ellis crawled over to her and inspected her injury.

"Nick, she has a Hunter claw wound on her shoulder." Ellis said in a worried tone.

"Patch her up. I'll stand guard outside the room." Nick slowly got to his feet.

"Uhh. . .Nick?" Ellis spoke awkwardly.

"What, Ellis?" Nick said in an irritable tone.

"She's a girl, I don't want to you know. . .undress her." Ellis grinned in a nervous way.

Nick facepalmed himself and shook his head in annoyment. "Fine, I'll patch her up."

"Okay, I'll stand guard at the front door." Ellis got up and walked out of the room.

Nick kneeled down then heard Ellis open the door again. "One more thing, don't have too much fun, Nick." Ellis winked then left the room.

Nick rolled his eyes and thought to himself, "Pervert."

"Hey, kid. Can you take your sweatshirt off for me so I can see your wound?" Nick asked.

Maya nodded and removed her sweatshirt. She then lifted her white t-shirt up so that her wound was exposed to air. She gave a a little yelp of pain and closed her eyes.

Nick got his first aid kit from his bookbag and opened it up. He grabbed a bandage patch and some anti-infection spray to clean the wound.

"I'm going to spray some of this anti-infection spray in your wound. Try not to scream." Nick said to Maya as he shook the can of anti-infection spray.

Once Nick sprayed some the anti-infection spray on Maya's wound she cried out loud in pain. Nick threw his hand over her mouth to make her be quiet.

"Shhhh! I told you don't scream." Nick said as he let go of Maya's mouth.

"Kind of hard not to when a wound that deep hurts." Maya said as she sat still for Nick.

Nick just rolled his eyes and finished patching Maya's wound up. He put his anti-infection spray away in the first aid kit and put it back in the bookbag.

Maya pulled her blood stained shirt down over herself again and put her hoodie back on. She put her hood up again and faced Nick nervously.

Nick gave her an irritable look and pulled her hood back down that made some of her hair stick up. Maya fixed hair and laid her hands on her lap and looked down.

"So kid, you going to stay here?" Nick asked.

Maya shrugged. "I might as well since I got no where else to go. My parents are dead, along with my older brother, so I guess I'll share their fate."

Nick gave a little shrug and stood up and walked away from Maya. He looked over his shoulder one last time at the girl and gave her a slight sign of sympathy. He walked away back to Ellis and gave him a gesture to leave.

"Wait, Nick. We can't leave her here alone. She'll die!" Ellis said as he gave Nick a scowl.

Nick rolled his eyes. "Ellis, she'll slow us down. She's half dead anyway, she won't make it much longer."

"Nick, it won't kill ya to at least try to take care of her. If we don't try, that's another innocent life lost." Ellis gave into sympathy for Maya.

"No, Ellis!" Nick scolded him.

"If it was Rochelle in her place, you would agree right away. She's only twelve, she's barely lived life." Ellis mentioned.

Nick looked into Ellis' blue-eyed gaze and saw a little more sympathy for Maya. "Fine, but only until we find another person to take care of her."

Ellis gave Nick a shrug and walked back to Maya's room to get her to come with them. Nick followed close behind, but when they got into her room, she had passed out. Ellis ran over to her right away and laid her in his lap.

"Nick, is she okay?" Ellis asked him in a worried tone.

Nick looked at her. "She must be tired, she probably has been awake for sometime to watch out for herself. Get some clothes for her, hand her to me."

Ellis nodded in agreement and lifted Maya up into his arms and handed her off to Nick. Ellis grabbed a black bookbag and grabbed a purple t-shirt that laid on the floor of her closet, a pair of blue jeans, another hoodie for her and pair of shoes for her. He put everything she needed neatly in her bag and threw it over his other shoulder.

Nick stared down at Maya and watched her chest rise and fall as she slept. He gave a little grin at her and held her against his chest to get her warmed up. Ellis looked at her and rubbed her head gently.

Nick and Ellis walked out of Maya's room and closed the door behind them to leave the house in peace for Maya's parent's death. They went outside and looked around for any zombies; none were around. Nick and Ellis began walking down the abandoned street toward where ever they would stop next, hopefully the next safe room.

An hour later, Nick and Ellis walked into a town that was zombie infested; they were glad that Maya wasn't awake to see their bloody, mutilated faces. Nick handed Maya off to Ellis to hold her and keep her out of danger. Ellis kneeled down and laid her against one of his legs and began shooting zombies with his Dual Pistols. Nick was shooting with his Assult Rifle and was next to Ellis to make sure nothing would hurt Maya.

"Nick, I see a safe room up ahead. We should get there and get Maya to safety." Ellis yelled as he shot two zombies in the head.

"Nice eye, Ellis. Good idea we'll rest there for the night." Nick replied as he gave Ellis a hand sign to follow him.

Ellis gave a nod and put his pistols in his side holders and picked Maya up in his semi-muscular arms. He ran after Nick to catch up with him; he did finally. All the zombies were dead and all three of the survivors emerged into the safe room, unharmed.

Nick and Ellis panted for breath; Nick looked down at Maya. Her long, dark brown hair hung in her face a little bit but luckily she was unharmed.

Maya began to awaken again and she winced in pain from her shoulder wound. Her eyes opened, showing their beautiful turquoise color. Ellis held her in his lap gently and looked at her with a gentle smile.

"I see you're awake now." Ellis said calmly.

She looked at both of them with a mysterious wonder. "You guys took me with you?"

Nick nodded. "Just until we find someone else who can watch over you though." Nick sighed as he turned his head toward her.

Maya nervously blushed and nodded her head in agreement. Ellis smiled at Maya and whispered something in her ear so Nick wouldn't hear him.

"Do you have a crush on Nick?" Ellis whispered.

Maya looked at Ellis and blushed more as he asked her. Ellis winked as if he was telling her he wouldn't tell him.

Two hours later, Nick, Ellis, and Maya had just finished up dinner and Maya had already fallen asleep in between Ellis' legs and her head laid on his chest. Ellis held her close to him and rubbed her head gently.

"What? Does she have crush on you, Ellis?" Nick smirked.

Ellis narrowed his eyes in annoyment. "I don't know. Did she have any siblings, Nick? You two did talk a little bit."

Nick nodded. "She had an older brother."

"Maybe that's why. So maybe I can treat as her brother would, I mean for the time being at least." Ellis stated.

"Don't get too attached to her, Ellis." Nick hissed.

Ellis rolled his eyes and picked Maya up in his arms and laid in a sleeping bag with her still in his arms.

"Ellis, no. She's not sleeping with you. She's old enough to sleep by herself." Nick scowled.

"Nick, shes freezing cold and shes shivering. Plus, you wouldn't treat her like I will." Ellis smirked.

"Alright, fine. Just don't fuck her in your sleep." Nick chuckled.

"You're sick, Nick. I wouldn't do that to her. She's only twelve."

Nick shrugged and laid down in a sleeping bag by the door and Ellis went right to sleep after a few minutes of silence. Ellis hugged Maya in his sleep and Maya gave a little smile and smiled at Nick too; she was very thankful to get help in time.

~That's the end of chapter two. Damn it's long. I hope you guys will enjoy this chapter and the next shapters that will come out, cya :)~
