Chapter Two
Jacob and I were tossing ideas around for about ten minutes, before coming up with a plan for the rest of the evening. As we prepare to leave the store room, Matthew pokes his head in. "Hey, there's a new broadcast starting, want to come hear it?" He says.
"Yes, we'll be out in a few seconds." I reply, standing up. I enter the room first, Jacob following me. The sounds of a voice becomes audible. "... ve it is a disease that is, thankfully, short lived in the air, but within the few hours it effects anyone who is outside or who goes inside. The latest update from officials released the effects of the plague and where the worst affected areas are." The host grimly states. "The scientific name for the disease is Primis Intesia, which basically means, in non scientific terms, that the infected person becomes a real life zombie. The infected are easy to identify, so we are being cautioned to avoid them at all costs. The scientists say that the disease should be gone from the air by tomorrow morning, but be cautious, even when the disease is gone from the air, it can still be transmitted via a bite from an infected. Worst infected areas include London, Belfast and Edinburgh, followed by Birmingham, Dungannon and Cardiff. That's all the news that has been released so far. I'll do an update tomorrow morning, but for now, goodnight and stay safe." The music fades back to the music, which was a calm classical piece.
The others resumed their seats while Jacob and I stood at the front of the classroom, ready to announce our plan of action. "Ok, so the long term plan can be sorted out tomorrow, as it is quite late and none of us have ate since lunch. Right now, the plan for tonight is as follows." Jacob starts.
"We know that there is food in the HE rooms, thanks to Emma. We can use the resources up there to made our dinner. For beds, there are the blue mats in the girls gym that we can utilise, and I know that the drama room upstairs has a closet full of blankets and pillows." I continue.
"For those who don't have chargers with them, we shall check the teachers desks, as they most likely have a spare one here." Jacob finishes.
"What about clothes?" Zoe asks. "I doubt any of us want to stay in our uniforms while we sleep."
"Good point. Well, some of us had PE today, so we have a set of our own clothes, but for those who don't, I'm sure the PE office or the drama room have some spare clothes." Jacob points out. The others talk amongst themselves for a few minutes before turning to us. "Sounds good. Who's doing what?" Kirsty inquires.
After a small discussion ourselves, I designate jobs. "Matthew and Nate will get the mats out. Jacob and Emma will go looking for chargers and will check the PE office for clothes. Zoe and Nyx will go make dinner, while myself and Kirsty go up to the drama room for blankets, pillows and clothes." We split into our pairs and head off to complete our tasks. Kirsty and I race up the stairs and enter the drama room. At the back of the room were a few sofas with a handful of pillows, not enough for our group. Then we opened the store door, and the next thing we know, we're buried under an avalanche of pillows, blankets and random articles of clothes. We managed to clamber out of the mound and gather a couple of pillows and blankets, before carrying them down to the girls gym. Eight of the mats had been strategically set out around the hall, so that everyone had a power supply beside them.
After dumping the pillows and blankets we brought down in the centre of the hall, Matthew and Nate helped us bring the rest of the drama storeroom contents down. By the time we return to the hall with the last of the pillows, Jacob and Emma had returned. Between the two of them, they had found several chargers, a couple sets of pe kits and a selection of biscuits and sweets the teachers had stashed in their drawers. We sort the heap in the centre of the hall into three piles; blankets, pillows and clothes. We find a few unusable items of clothing, mostly because it is from a different era, for example, a frilly shirt, a corset and a ballroom gown, to name a few. Overall, we all get at least two other outfits apart from our uniforms. Before we could divide the pillows and blankets, Nyx enters the hall and announces that dinner is ready in one of the HE rooms. We all follow Nyx upstairs to Emma, who was just setting the final plates of food down.
We sit down to eat at the table, which was a combination of desks that had been pulled together. The cooking duo had prepared a delightful meal of scrambled eggs and chips. It was a weird combination, but since it had been pulled together with such a small range of ingredients, it was hardly worth complaining about. Dinner was a quiet event, as we all pondered the days events as we ate by torch light. "I wonder how it is outside of the upper building? How many were infected, and how many are just injured due to other factors, such as the earthquake and the power outage. Speaking of which, I'm extremely glad that there were few lights on when the bomb hit, otherwise we would be swimming in shattered glass." I'm pulled from my pondering by Zoe, who digs her elbow into my side. "You're doing that thing again, you know, where you overthink things." She utters.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to." I reply quietly. Zoe smiles before continuing to eat.
Once everyone had finished eating, we cleaned the tables and dishes before heading down to the girls gym. Once we had all gathered there, we divided the pillows and blankets before getting changed for bed. I was the first changed, so I went for a little dander down the Geography and History corridor. In the second History classroom, I found hot chocolate powder, so I returned to the HE department to make everyone a cup before bed. We drank them in the corridor outside the hall, talking about random things. Nyx and I return to the Art classroom where we wash the mugs before taking the radio and returning to the gym. When we entered the hall, Nyx went to the other end of the hall and set the radio on the stage. He wound it up, letting some soft jazz music float through the hall, as we all got settled down under blankets on our own mats. I plugged my phone into the charger and set it on the floor, hoping that the power would resume before we awoke the next morning. After a chorus of 'Goodnight' we all fell asleep.
I'm awoken by the soft, golden glow of the sunlight filtering through a window. Sitting up, I look around at my surroundings. All of the other mats still have sleeping people huddled under blankets, except for three of them. Gathered at the front of the hall around the radio is Nyx, Kirsty and Jacob. Sliding off the mat, keeping one of the blankets tightly wrapped around me, I check my phone. At some stage of the night, the power and internet must have returned, as my phone has full battery, and has only one notification. It's a news alert. I unlock my phone and read through the alert. It's a repeat of what the broadcast last night had announced, but it was good to refresh my knowledge. The only difference was an update that was made under an hour beforehand, which said that it was safe to go outside. Putting my phone into my pocket, I tiptoe up to the stage. The three others whisper 'Good Morning' to me before we lapsed into silence, listening to music from the radio while Jacob and Kirsty play tic tac toe on a piece of paper.
After a few songs, I grow bored, so I lean over to Kirsty and whisper "I'm gonna go for a walk around the upper. I have my phone if you need me." She gives me a thumbs up before proceeding to beat Jacob in their tenth round. I exit the hall and wander the upper building corridors. I've never been at school this early, so to see it full of this golden light is magical. The only downside is that the floors are ice cold to my feet, which only have socks as a protective barrier. As well as attempting to protect my feet from the bitter cold floor, socks also allow me to slide down the corridors, which leads me to go flying into an Art classroom door. The once locked door is locked no more, for it must have not locked properly last time it was opened. Entering the room, I discover rolls upon rolls of fabrics. Sat in the centre of the room was a table with a sewing machine. Spotting a roll of gorgeous, vintage patterned fabric, divine inspiration struck.
An hour and a few meters of material later, I emerge from the room with a few finished pieces. Walking down the corridors, I notice that they were a bit noisier than when I was last in them. Upon entering the hall, I'm greeted by the sight of a damp Zoe running after Nate, who was holding a bucket that he must have retrieved from the cleaners cupboard. I dodge the duo and join Matthew at the front of the hall. "What exactly happened here?" I asked, setting the material down on the stage.
"Nate dumped a bucket of water onto Zoe to get her up. What is that?" Emma asked from her seat on the edge of the stage.
"These? These are some pjs I made in one of the art rooms. The one that's always locked had been left unlocked is filled to the brim with material and a sewing machine. I made two sets and embroidered each one with Zoe and Jacobs names. I'll work on making one set for each of us." I explain, folding the new clothing neatly. Emma nods. I hand Jacob his pjs before setting Zoe's on her 'bed' which has dried up pretty fast.
