Halloween Special: Trick
Camila walked around Halloween night in Brownsville with angel clothing, complete with a halo hat, a golden and silver breastplate with similar clothing across the shoulders, kilt, and gauntlets.
Thankfully the weather was just warm enough to not be much of a bother.
But spotting so many different groups of kids with their parents, teens around her own age, and even a few couples left her in dismay. Everyone but her had an orbit.
Her wings caught wind of people discussing the ideal stores to get candy from, noticing a certain bodega that made her body shudder.
"Maybe he's not working there tonight..." thinking it over. "No, he is," looking through her phone.
Half of which were people she couldn't trust, the other half lived far from her.
She flipped the camera app on to take a selfie and enjoy her own beauty and self-made angel costume to post online.
Maintaining a brief glimpse of confidence in her smile, she decided to follow the crowd walking approaching the street to go after the multiple stores leading into the train stations heading to Rockaway Avenue.
The sidewalk was way more crowded than she expected with a minority of adolescents around several kids with their parents.
Crap. But if I move fast, maybe I can.
"Hey, angel."
She shuddered as the hand slid down her back was nothing compared to the memories of a particular individual.
"You know, you told me that tonight we were gonna share treats. How about we give each other another quick taste before then?"
She stepped forward with no hesitation, but she saw his shadow follow her, surprised a third shadow was approaching. When she turned around, a person with several pieces of clothing was now between them.
"Hey, could you leave my girlfriend alone?"
That voice was too familiar.
The man's eyes scowled, in a tunic, completely toned and way out of either of their leagues in terms of physical strength and appearance.
"You? She's my girl!"
"Kincaid, there you are? You're cheating on me?"
"Sindey?"
Another woman wearing a similar angel costume to Camila's approached the three of them as her 'boyfriend' pulled out a blue sword on them.
"Sidney, it's not like that."
"Whoa whoa, everyone calm down," pointing out they had similar looking outfits. "Looks like a simple misunderstanding."
Kincaid turned to Camila. "I am so sorry, both of you. I thought it was Sidney's!"
She twirled her hair. "Accidents happen."
"Word of advice. Tap their shoulder just in case, next time."
Sidney flaunted her air while looking at Camila. "Where'd you buy yours?"
"Oh, I saw it on a horror movie and kinda made it with some arts and crafts."
"She's really talented."
"Boyfriend's right, Party City's has nothing on yours. You'd probably win at our college's party. Come Kincaid, we're running late!"
They fled, and Camila turned to the guy who saved her.
"Silas. What are you doing here? And what's with...this?"
He put his sword down, which had a pumpkin of candy at the hilt of the blade. The outfit: shades in the middle of the night, an afro, and, "wait, is that blood?"
"Had some dye from Kool-Aid Punch leftover. Add some old nosebleed marks and let some paint dry and you've got battle scars."
"You can see?"
He pulled out his backup glasses just in case.
"But you said you weren't going?"
"I said I didn't have a solid costume. My cousins convinced my mom to let me go with them. There's three major candy routes over here: Rockaway, Livonia, and Pitkin Avenue."
"You were gonna meet them at Rockaway?"
"No, Livonia's too scary at night, so after I speed through here, we're going roam Pitkin."
"But that's super long."
"That makes it less competitive for us."
"Hey, give us back our candy!"
The duo caught wind of teens their height running away, leaving a trail of angry and confused kids in their wake, one whom had a mohawk Camila recalled.
"You know them?"
"Sort of. They're not really a nice person."
"He took my baby's snacks," yelled an old lady with hot coffee in her hands, giving Silas an idea.
"We'll get your grandchild's stuff back if you let me have your coffee."
"Take it, get those sons of-"
"Camila, come!"
She had no choice but to keep up with his dash away. "Why did you ask for her coffee?"
He put his sword in his book bag, pulling out a water gun to fill it with the hot coffee.
"Aren't you supposed to be a swordsman?"
"They used it later," pausing at two scooters.
"We can't steal those!"
"My cousins own these! Hop on!"
Rapidly kicking off the ground and following them, the two passed a school, catching up with two of the four.
"We're being hunted!"
"Get rid of them!"
Fearing the worst, Silas aimed and shot the coffee from the gun into the eyes of one of them about to reach in his pockets. They screamed and fell once Silas tackled him, tossing it to Camila while he searched the guy, thankfully finding no weapons.
Camila struggled to steer and aim it properly, jumping off to crash the scooter into the second guy, recovering his stolen goods when Silas looked up to see the other two, both wearing ghost costumes, climbing up a building, with him tossing several bags as his friends.
"No you don't!"
He chucked his sword at the duo, but missed. As it felt, Camila grabbed his water gun to hurl it up, knocking one of the two bags remaining and forcing the one in the mohawk to pick up his friend instead before retreating into the other side.
He sucked his teeth. "Well we got some of it back at least."
"Oh, we could go through Pitkins and make up the rest."
Their legs were tired after bursting through two dozen blocks collecting as much as they could, heading back to see the smile on the kid's faces revive.
