Chapter 7

Aileen and I patiently awaited Hannah's presence. Luckily, she was still up and agreed to see me as soon as she could.

"For the record, I hate this plan." Aileen said.

I nervously paced around the room. "For the hundredth time; point taken."

Then, there was a knock on the door.

We froze, sharing a look before I slowly headed towards the door.

I opened it, seeing Hannah standing on the other side, arms raised to knock again. "Oh, hey, is everything ok?" She asked, lowering her arm.

I took a quick glance back at Aileen. "Yes, uh, come in."

Hannah followed me inside, immediately spotting Aileen. "Hello, you're Mikayla's aunt, right?"

Aileen and I shared another quick glance before she stood.

"Actually, that's why we called you over." Aileen said, gesturing for Hannah to sit.

She did so nervously, me sitting down next to her. "What's all this about?"

Hannah looked between the two of us, confusion clouding her features.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

Aileen rolled her eyes. "I'm not her aunt... I'm her guardian angel."

Silence filled the room, then, as Hannah looked between us.

Then, she started to laugh. "Alright, that was pretty funny... What was the point of the joke, though?"

Aileen crouched down in front of Hanna, looking deep into her eyes. "This isn't a joke..."

Hannah glanced at me nervously as Aileen raised her hand, holding it in front of Hannah's forehead.

She looked on in amazement as a bright, white light hummed from behind Aileen's palm.

"Wow..." She said, the light glowing, reflecting off her eyes.

Then, she quickly stood, distancing herself from us. "Holy shit! What the hell was that! What the hell are you!" She panicked.

I stood then, inching slowly towards Hannah. "Listen, just try to relax, ok?"

"Stay away from me!" She yelled, backing herself into a corner.

"I told you she wouldn't get it." Aileen said.

I raised my hand at her. "You're not helping. Just, give me a minute."

She rolled her eyes, folding her arms over her chest.

I refocused my attention on Hannah. "It's ok, she's not going to hurt you..."

Hannah shook her head. "You didn't see what I saw... The things she showed me... I can't unsee that..."

I turned towards Aileen. "What the hell did you show her?"

She shrugged, biting her nail. "The last few million years or so... All at once..."

I shook my head. "C'mon, really? You're purposely sabotaging this."

"Well, how else was she gonna believe me?" Aileen asked.

"I don't know, make a flame with your hand or something." I replied.

She scoffed. "I'm not a witch."

"I literally saw you pull a hammer out of thin air earlier."

   "That's different." She said.

I put my hands up. "Alright, look, we're losing focus-"

"She's leaving." Aileen said, pointing to the open door.

"Shit." I huffed before following Hannah down the hall.

   "Hannah, wait." I called out.

She just shook her head, refusing to stop.

We made it all the way to the parking lot before Aileen suddenly formed in front of her, blocking her path.

"Alright, listen up, nurse. This is real, it's really happening to you, and nothing can change that. So, either you can come back and hear us out, or I'm gonna have to wipe your memory... Which, by the way, hurts. Really badly."

Hannah froze, glancing back at me, looking deep into my pleading eyes.

   Then, she sighed. "Fine..."

After getting Hannah back inside, we sat her at the kitchen table and laid everything out for her. What happened to me, what Aileen was doing here and what that had to do with us getting together...

   "Fate..? Really?" Hannah asked.

"I know it sounds crazy-" I started.

"You realize you're literally sitting next to an angel, right?" She cut off.

I nodded. "Fair enough... Anyway, I didn't wanna believe it at first either. But, think about it... It's a little more than a coincidence."

She sat back in her chair, taking in a deep breath. "I need a drink."

Aileen snapped her fingers, a tray holding a bottle of scotch and a few glasses appearing in front of us.

   "On the house." She said.

Hannah nodded, pouring herself a glass, before practically chugging it.

She slammed the glass down, letting out a cough. "Alright... Let's say I believe you... What does that mean for us..?"

I poured myself a glass. "We're not sure yet."

She pointed at Aileen. "You mean, the literal angel doesn't know?"

Aileen shrugged. "Hey, they don't tell me everything."

Hannah laughed bitterly, pouring herself another drink. "Well, isn't that just great... I don't even know what to think anymore..."

I rested my hand on hers. "Listen... I know this is a lot to take in. It's a lot for me to... But, what I feel for you, it's real... Everything we said... Everything we did..."

She looked into my eyes, seeming to sense the seriousness behind them. "I believe you..."

I smiled a little. "Thank you."

She returned it before glancing back at Aileen. "You know... I guess there are worse things than having your very own Angel."

Aileen folded her arms over her chest. "Watch it."

Hannah and I laughed a little.

   Then, silence fell over us.

"Alright... What am I supposed to do?" Hannah asked.

"Keep this between us. No one can know about Aileen." I said.

   Hannah nodded. "Got it."

Aileen leveled a glare at her. "Are you sure?"

   She nodded again. "Yeah."

Aileen stood then. "Alrighty, I guess we'll see how this goes."

We watched as she sat down on the couch, turning on the TV.

Hannah looked after her for a long minute. "So, this is what angels do when they're not helping people out, huh?"

I chuckled. "Trust me, this isn't even the worst of it."

"I heard that." Aileen said, causing us to laugh.

Hannah faced me then. "Wait... You said she was there for our first date... Was she there for, you know-"

"No... At least I don't think so." I replied.

"And now you'll never know for sure." Aileen spoke up again.

Hannah shook her head. "Wow... This is gonna take some getting used to..."

I nodded a little. "Yeah, you're telling me..."
