Chapter 5

My mom and I sat at the kitchen table, Aileen standing over us, arms folded over her chest.

"So, this is her?" She asked.

I ignored her, fixing my mom with an icy glare. "You never answered my question."

My mom shrugged. "What? I can't check in on my only daughter?"

"I haven't seen you in over a decade and you decide to drop in now? There must be a better reason."

   "Damn straight." Aileen added.

My mom sighed. "Well, if you really must know... the doctors said I only have six months left at the most and I wanted to spend what little time I have left with you."

I stared at her for a long second before getting to my feet, a slight scoff escaping me. "So, this is your way of making yourself feel better, huh? You fucked up when I was a kid and now you wanna do right by me as your final gesture? Well, to little, to late."

My mom got to her feet as well. "Mikayla Berd, I raised you better than that."

"You didn't raise me at all! I was on my own for most of my childhood, then you dropped a business on me and took off. If you're asking for forgiveness, you won't get it. So, unless there's anything else, I think it's time you leave."

She looked like she wanted to protest, but decided against it.

I watched her walk to the door without a single word.

Then, she opened it. "I do love you, Mikayla."

And, with that, she was gone.

I stared at the door for a long minute before collapsing back in my chair, resting my head in my hands.

"You ok, kid?" Aileen asked, sitting down across from me.

I just shook my head, feeling a few tears welling up in my eyes.

She took my hand from across the table. "Why don't you get some rest and we can talk about this in the morning?"

I let out a small sniffle and sigh, wiping at my eyes. "Thanks... I'll see you in the morning."

Then, I stood up and headed to my room, where I fell face first onto my bed.

'After all these years she just expects to come back into your life like nothing ever happened... Hell, I almost died because of her stupid business and now she wants to patch things up? Well, to fucking bad...' I thought.

The familiar anger started to swirl around my gut.

I rolled over on my back and stared up at the ceiling, letting out a few long breathes. "Alright, enough thinking about that... Just focus on the awesome date you just had with the amazingly beautiful nurse..."

A slight smile spread on my lips as memories of tonight danced around my head, replacing all the negative thoughts my mother left behind...

As Saturday rolled around, I found myself nervously pacing in my living room.

"Alright, what's the problem?" Aileen asked from her spot on my couch.

I stopped pacing, facing her. "Nothing... Just, it's been a while and I don't wanna mess anything up."

Aileen stood, taking my face in her hands. "Listen, you rocked your last date and I have confidence this'll be no different."

I smiled a little. "Thanks... Now, can you let go of me?"

She took a step back, checking her watch. "It's time, ready to go?"

I froze. "Actually, uh, I was wondering if you could... You know, hang out here instead?"

She flashed me a smirk. "Ahh, got big plans for tonight, huh?"

I rubbed my forearm, my cheeks heating up. "Something like that."

Aileen patted my shoulder. "No problem, kid. I'll see you later."

   I nodded. "Thanks."

She nodded back before plopping down on the couch, turning the TV on.

I gathered my things before heading down to my car, driving off into the night...

I parked the car outside Hannah's place before looking at myself in the mirror.

'Aileens right, you killed the last date, this'll be a piece of cake.' I thought to myself.

I got out afterwards, walking into Hannah's apartment building.

Hannah was already waiting for me in the lobby.

"Hey, you." She greeted with a small kiss on my cheek.

I smiled. "Hey yourself, you look great as usual."

She smiled back. "So do you."

She took my arm then, leading me to her door.

We walked through and I stopped dead, taking in the giant room, decorated with beautiful artwork and furniture.

"Wow, this place is amazing." I said.

She nodded, looking around as well. "Yeah, thank my interior decorator."

I faced her. "You have an interior decorator?"

She chuckled lightly. "No... Unless you count me."

I smiled. "Well, you did a great job."

She returned it. "Thanks. Now, how about we get this dinner started."

I nodded, following her into the modern kitchen, taking a seat at the round, glass table.

She set two plates before placing them on the table. "Can I get you some wine?"

I nodded. "Thank you."

She poured out two glasses before joining me at the table.

I raised my glass. "To good food and even better company."

She smiled, clinking glasses with mine before taking a sip...

After dinner, we sat down on the giant, leather sectional in her living room.

I sipped my wine, taking in the artwork around the room. "I wouldn't have pegged you for an art collector."

She shrugged, sipping her wine as well. "Blame my mom, she was an art major in college."

I nodded. "That's so cool. Do you paint?"

"Here and there, I'm not very good though."

I set my glass down. "I'd love to see some, if you don't mind that is."

She smiled, setting her glass down as well before standing. "Not at all, follow me."

She led me down the hallway into a small art studio. Abstract paintings hung from the walls, a half finished one sitting on her easel.

I looked around at all the paintings. "You did all these?"

She nodded.

"They're amazing."

Her cheeks flushed. "Thanks, I'm glad someone thinks so."

I faced her. "Hey now, give yourself some credit. You have a great eye."

She looked down, a slight smile tugging at her lips. "You're to kind."

I took her hand in mine then. "I mean it. As a matter of fact, I could use a new painting for my apartment."

She looked up then. "Really?"

I nodded, scanning the walls once again, before pointing to a canvas smeared with bright, beautiful colors. "How about that one?"

She chuckled a little. "You're really serious, aren't you?"

"Serious as a heart attack." I replied.

She nodded. "Alright, consider it a gift."

I took a step closer to her. "And here I was willing to pay for it."

She stepped closer as well. "To late, I already offered."

I giggled a little, biting my lower lip. "Can I... Can I kiss you?"

Her cheeks flushed as she nodded.

I leaned in, slowly pressing my lips to hers.

We stayed like that for a while before she pulled away. "You're a great kisser."

I smirked. "You're not to bad yourself."

She giggled, averting my gaze. "Would you maybe wanna... stay the night?"

I took her hand in mine. "I'd love to..."
