Chapter 3
As promised, I was moved to a new room the next day. Unfortunately, I haven't built up the courage to ask Hannah out yet and Aileen wasn't particularly happy about it.
"How much of that shit pudding do you plan on eating before you ask her the damn question?" She asked, arms folded over her chest.
I set my empty pudding cup on the table next to my bed. "I'm working on it, ok? It's not as easy as it looks..."
She checked the time on her watch. "Well, you have exactly one hour, fourteen minutes, and thirty-three seconds left. You better get a move on."
I closed my eyes with a sigh. "Fine, let's get this over with."
She stood up from her spot leaning on the wall, a mischievous smile on her face. "Great, I'll be right back."
And, with a snap of her fingers, she was gone.
I rested my head in my hands. "C'mon, Mikayla, you're a strong woman, you can do this."
Then, the door opened and Hannah walked in, followed closely by Aileen, who had a different change of clothes on.
I stared at them, confused.
"Uh, do you know her, Miss Berd?" Hannah asked.
Aileen threw on her best puppy dog eyes. "Of course she does, she wouldn't forget her favorite aunt." She said, in a southern accent for whatever reason.
I glared at Aileen.
"You didn't mention anything about any family in your paperwork." Hannah said.
"Sorry, it must've slipped my mind." I replied, still staring down Aileen.
She just laughed. "This poor girl, I told her mother she wasn't ready for that job, it's clogging up that pretty little head of hers."
"Right..." I replied with a slight role of my eyes.
Then, Aileen turned her attention to Hannah. "Speaking of pretty, you are just a gorgeous little thing, ain't you? Wouldn't you agree, Mikayla?"
I groaned. "Hannah, can I have a second alone with my aunt?"
Hannah smiled. "Of course, I'll be right outside."
Then, she walked out, closing the door behind her.
I faced Aileen. "What the hell are you doing?" I whispered furiously.
"Best watch that temper now, sweet pea."
I closed my eyes and took in a few deep breathes.
"That's better, now I'm giving you a little push because I don't wanna see you take that express elevator to the bottom floor, understand?"
I sighed. "Alright, alright, bring her back in."
She smiled before opening the door. "You can come back in now, beautiful."
Hannah walked back in with a slight chuckle. "I see where you get your charm from, Miss Berd."
I felt my face flush.
"Now, isn't there something you wanted to ask the pretty nurse?" Aileen asked.
I took in a calming breath. "Right, Um, would you maybe... I don't know, wanna grab some dinner one night, when I get cleared to leave?"
Hannah smiled, her cheeks turning a light pink. "Sure, I'd love to."
"Wait, really?" I asked in disbelief.
She just nodded. "You'll be cleared on Wednesday, how about Friday we grab that dinner?"
I smiled. "Sure, that works for me."
Hannah smiled back. "Alright, cool, I'll see you then."
"Bye for now." I replied.
She waved before leaving the room once again.
"Now see, that wasn't so bad, was it?" Aileen asked.
I couldn't wipe the smile from my face. "I actually have a date, with a beautiful woman."
She sat down in the chair next to my bed. "See, you're already happier and it's not even Friday yet."
I looked over at her. "Thank you."
She smiled and nodded. "I'm just doing my job."
I laid back down, a happy sigh escaping me...
After getting cleared to leave, I headed back to my apartment, excited for Friday.
Aileen followed me down the hallway, rambling on about the date. What I should wear, where I should take her, blah, blah, blah.
I stuck my key in the lock and opened the door, hurrying inside and closing the door in Aileens face.
I breathed a sigh of relief, when I heard her voice from the couch.
"Did you really expect that to work?" She asked.
I leaned against the kitchen counter. "Well, I was kinda hoping it would."
She stood up, strolling into the kitchen. "Look, I'm just trying to make sure this date goes smoothly."
"I know, but maybe leave the planning up to me, ok?"
She raised her hands. "Fine, what do you have in mind?"
"Just a simple dinner, get to know her a little better, then go from there."
She let out a huff. "Lame, but I guess it'll work for now."
Then, she grabbed a bag of chips from the counter and moved back to my couch, where she grabbed the remote and turned on the TV.
"Uh, what're you doing?" I asked.
"What does it look like?" She asked, eating a hand full of chips.
I just shook my head and wandered into my room, closing the door behind me before collapsing onto my bed.
'I guess you really are stuck with her.'
Eventually, I fell asleep, thoughts Hannah dancing through my dreams...
Friday morning came along sooner than anticipated and Aileen was there to give me a wake up call...
"Get up already!" She yelled, pulling my blanket off the bed.
I groaned. "C'mon, just give me a few more minutes."
"We don't have time, we have to get you ready for your date, remember?"
With a small sigh, I finally rolled out of bed and headed towards the attached bathroom.
"Where are you going?" Aileen asked.
"Taking a shower, care to join me?" I asked sarcastically as I closed the door behind me...
After getting ready for the day, Aileen and I headed down to the mall to pick up a new dress, even though my closet was full of them.
We walked through the isles, Aileen seemingly disgusted with every dress they had.
"No... Nope... Hell no. Jesus Christ, these people wouldn't know good taste if it kicked them in the ass."
"Look, why don't you let me pick one? It is my date after all."
She folded her arms over her chest. "Fine, I'll check in with you later."
Then, she disappeared, leaving me to myself for the time being...
After picking out a dress, I left the mall and hopped back in my car, where Aileen was patiently waiting.
"So, how'd you do?" She asked.
"Good, I like the dress. Now, let's go make a reservation."
So, we took off in search of a restaurant, making sure everything was ready for later tonight...
