More Than Meets The Eye

"So, what are your strengths, weaknesses, favorite movies?" Hawks asked me casually, as yet another set of crimson red feathers rapidly shot out from his wings.
I looked around in shock, watching as each and every feather went to do a specific job, saving the day in its own way. Seriously, it's almost like the guy was in multiple places at once.
"Hawks!! You just saved my dog from getting hit by a car!!"
"You stopped this robber from stealing my purse!!"
"Your feather just carried me up all of these stairs. Thank you for helping me, young man!"
My brows raised, slightly impressed by his abilities.....but honestly, it also seemed like he was just trying to show off.
"Strengths and weaknesses, huh? Seems like that's something I should be asking you, Mr. Number Two Hero." I retorted lightly, adjusting the gloves that accompanied my hero costume.
"Sure, I have no problem answering that, chicky. But, I asked you first." He smirked challengingly, waving to a group of civilians nearby.
I felt his eyes on me, as I kept my gaze forward...absentmindedly surveying the busy streets of the city.
"Well...my quirk is a difficult one to control. Immobilization means I can stop anything from moving, for forty five seconds. I can only stop three things, or people, at a time...so, I guess you got very lucky I hadn't exhausted my quirk yet, the day I saved you from that falling piece of concrete." I teased, shielding my eyes from the blinding sun.
I heard Hawks chuckle lightly at my words, watching his wings flutter gently.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're my hero. Is that what you wanna hear?" He said, matching my teasing tone.
"Hmm, yes actually. That's exactly what I've been waiting for you to say." I remarked, before continuing a moment later.
"But, I've actually come a long way since my quirk first manifested. I used to only be able to immobilize things for five seconds at a time. I've also built up my quirk to stop three things simultaneously. I used to only be able to stop one." I mumbled, remembering the grueling training I've put my body through, for the past eight years.
"Wow. Sounds like a lot of work. It's no wonder you're the top student at UA." Hawks said, sounding slightly impressed with my feat.
"It was a lot of work. But...it's worth it, being able to save people. Being able to make them not worry, no matter the situation. I wanna be just like him." I blurted out, too busy reminiscing on my past to even realize what I said.
Hawks hummed lightly at my words, lazily looking up at the sky.
"Who?" He simply asked.
I was pulled from my thoughts at his question, directing my attention towards him now.
"What?" I uttered out in confusion.
"You said you wanna be just like him. Who's the 'him' you're talking about." He questioned, absentmindedly shooting out another feather, stopping a pick pocket thief in the act.
What the hell? Hawks was looking up at the sky, when he stopped that pick pocketer. How did he even notice him!? I didn't!
I thought he wasn't paying attention to anything. That's how he always appears, anyway...
I quickly shook my head of any admiring thoughts I was having about Hawks, turning my attention back to his question.
"O-Oh. Who's the 'him' I'm talking about? Well, to be honest with you...I'm not so sure myself. But, um.....do you remember the Great Attack of Fukuoka? That crazy terrorist attack, that happened eight years ago?" I asked, watching his fluffy blonde locks flow in the wind.
Hawks was quiet for a minute, with an unreadable expression plastered on his face. Then again, it was hard to see anything on his face with those aviator glasses he sported. They hid his features well. Maybe that's why he wore them.
"Ehhhh. Sort of. Vaguely. Actually-not really. Why do ya ask?" He finally said, after a few moments of silence.
I smiled softly, as I began remembering him. The angel of the sky.
"Well...I was actually there, that day. My mom and I decided to take a walk in the city. She had just gotten her paycheck, and wanted to treat me to an ice cream cone. Somehow, I ended up getting separated from her, and landed right in the middle of all that chaos. Well...long story short...I got caught in an explosion when I was trying to save another little girl, and that's when he appeared." I started off, watching Hawks stare blankly into the street ahead.
He didn't even seem like he was listening. But, since he wasn't interrupting, I'll just continue.
"I was too out of it to see his face. All I could see was the dark silhouette of this guy-sorry, this kid. I don't remember how old he said he was. But, I do remember how he saved me. He saved my life...picked me up and carried me away from the explosion area. Then, he shielded me from this piece of debris that broke off from one of the buildings. He could have left me there, but he didn't. He stayed with me. He calmed me. He saved my life." I whispered, feeling my throat tighten up...the way it always does, every time I tell that story.
Hawks was quiet for a moment, pulling the collar of his fluffy jacket up to his mouth. It was a little chilly out.
"So, you never saw his face?" He simply asked, his typical goofy demeanor not present in his tone at the moment.
"No. I never did. But...I do remember how amazing he was." I breathed out, feeling the loud sounds of the city becoming white noise to me.
"Um. So, Ari. there's something I think....you should know-"
"Honestly, I don't even know if he really even existed. I was pretty beat up that day. I was already half dead from that explosion. I could have just been seeing things, due to the trauma of it all. That's what people started telling me, after I told them what happened. They told me he was probably just a figment my imagination created, to help cope with the trauma. But....I don't know. I'd like to believe he's out there somewhere. I know this might sound stupid to you...but, I call him....the angel of the sky. I mean, he even had the wings of an angel, from what I remember. His wings were big and beautiful, kind of like yours." I mumbled, before quickly following up my words.
"H-Hah! Except, I'm sure the angel who saved me is much less devious than you, Chicken Boy." I smirked, trying to lighten the mood after all of the serious stuff I just spilled out.
I didn't mean to tell Hawks all of that. It just kind of came out. Admittedly, I was a little embarrassed, and figured I'd deflect the conversation with some humor.
Hawks didn't respond right away, making me a little nervous that I pissed him off. I quickly peered my gaze over to him, taken aback when I noticed he was already looking at me out of the corner of his eye.
He was trying to hide his face. That much was obvious. The collar of his flight jacket was pulled all the way up past his mouth. His sunglasses masked his eyes....only slightly. Even through those aviators...I could see those honey golden orbs of his. He looked different. He looked soft and serious, like he wanted to say something...but didn't know how.
He looked....like he cared.
I couldn't help but look back at him in silence, not understanding.
It was really hard for me to read Hawks. I couldn't tell what he was thinking. I'd be lying if I said he didn't intrigue me a little...
All of this strange behavior from him, lasted no more than a millisecond, as he quickly shook his head and averted his gaze from me.
"Heh...'course I'm devious! Devils have more fun, chicky. I can promise ya that." Hawks smirked, gaining back most of his cocky exterior once again.
I ignored his words, still looking at him in absentminded confusion.
Hawks clearly felt my eyes on him, as he nervously adjusted his collar, looking everywhere but my gaze.
I'm starting to think there's more to him, than he lets on.
"Hmm. Drooling over me already, Ari? I know I'm irresistible, but c'mon babe. Eyes on the job." He teased, shooting me a small wink.
I realized he was referring to how I was still staring at him, causing my cheeks to heat up.
Averting my gaze faster than lightning, I took a second to compose myself...wondering why I cared about anything to do with the likes of Hawks.
"Drooling over you? Please. Like that'd ever happen." I mumbled in annoyance, lightly rolling my eyes as a crowd of civilians came over to take pictures with Hawks and I.
Hawks simply chuckled at my words, fully returning to his usual happy go lucky self as he began chatting up and sweet talking the citizens.
Damn. He sure was a natural at this.
