Chapter 6
The crowd was screaming, the dancers and actors were all running around in a panic and I stood there frozen, my stomach twisting feeling my knees bumping into one another.
I felt someone grab my arm and I turned seeing Raoul, his eyes dilated with concern and I quickly took his hand, leading him away through the panicking dancers, up a set of stairs leading to the roof. Knowing I had to tell him, it was now or never this madness has to come to an end.
"Christine, where are you taking us?" He asked as I guided him up the stairs.
"We're not safe here, Raoul," I replied turning a corner and swinging open the door.
"We must return!"
I held his hands tightly in mine as we stepped out onto the roof looking into his.
"No he'll kill us, he'll find me there!"
"Who are you talking about, who will kill us?" Raoul asked looking into my eyes as if the answer would be there.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes for a moment, then opened them.
"The Phantom Of The Opera."
He shook his head, a look of disbelief spreading across his face.
"There is no Phantom Of The Opera."
Now it was my turn to have the look of disbelief, he couldn't possibly think that not after the notes, the voice that spoke at the theatre, after everything that's happened.
"Raoul, he is, he's the one that took me last night, to that place where it seemed as if the daylight of the world turned into darkness, I've seen what he looks like beneath his mask, a face so distorted and deformed,"
My voice shook for a moment then I thought about how his eyes had looked, how his singing made me feel something I had never felt before.
"But his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound, and I could feel my soul begin to soar, and as I looked into his eyes I saw all the sadness in the world."
Raoul skimmed his fingers against my cheek and hugged me and I accepted it needing that from him.
"Christine, no more talk of darkness, forget these wide eye fears, I promise you're safe I won't let anyone harm you, I'll always be here beside you."
I looked up at him, wanting that more than anything.
"Say you'll love me every waking moment, turn my head with talk of summertime, say you'll need me with you now and always, and promise me that all you say is true, that's all I ask of you."
"I will be your shelter, I'll make your fears be far behind you, Christine I love you."
I could feel the warmness of having those words that I have been longing to say to him since I was a child being said to me by him now.
"Share each day with me, each night, each morning," Raoul spoke, reaching into his pocket, and pulling out a small blue case.
My heart began to pound as he opened it, revealing a diamond ring with a slight golden look to it. He held my hand into his slipping it onto my finger and as soon as he had it on my finger I crushed him with a hug as he stood up, grabbing my waist and swinging me around.
I laughed, having not felt this much joy for a long time.
I pressed my forehead against him, feeling him grasp the back of my neck as I held his.
"Anywhere you go let me go too, that's all I ask of you," I whispered, feeling almost breathless at the thought of spending my entire lifetime with Raoul.
He kissed me softly starting at my chest then my neck and he placed his hand against my face, I could see all the love and adoration he had for me filling his eyes as he gently kissed my lips. I hope he could see and feel the same amount of adoration and love I had for him, he was truly the only person I would ever want forever by my side.
As we pulled off of each other I thought I saw a glimpse of a shadow in the distance but as soon as I blinked it was gone.
I shook my head I wasn't going to let thoughts of darkness or the Phantom ruin this moment.
I grabbed his hand guiding him towards the door.
"Order your fine horses, be with me at the door!"
Raoul laughed as I opened the door.
"Christine, I love you."
As we descended down the stairs the theatre was completely empty, almost eerily so considering the chaos it had once been moments before. We were halfway down the stairs when I realized I had left my scarf that I had quickly wrapped around my neck before going out and I stopped.
"Raoul, will you wait for me I left my scarf on the roof," I told him, stopping abruptly.
"I'll be waiting for you in the carriage with the finest horses," He replied with a grin as he kissed my hand.
I giggled before quickly rushing back up the stairs to the roof, opening the door, and approaching the red scarf which was now covered in specks of white snow. As I picked it up, dusting the snow off, suddenly a chill went up my spine as I heard a familiar voice.
"I gave you my music, made your heart take wing, and now how you've repaid me denied me, and betrayed me,"
I turned seeing the Opera Ghost standing in front of me and I backed away slightly at first at the sight of him, but hearing the sadness fill his voice and face made my heart hurt for him, hating to have been the cause of it.
"He was bound to love you, I supposed, how could anyone not after hearing you sing?"
I could almost see a tear go down the unmasked part of his face and I felt myself moving towards him.
"I'm sorry," I spoke softly as I took his gloved hands into mine.
He rubbed my hand gently at first then as he looked down at my hands, his eyes landing on the engagement ring I could his face twist into anger, and his grip tightened around my hands.
I tried to get them out of his grasp, but he was stronger and I could feel the fear cling to my pounding heart as he looked down at me sharply.
"You will curse the day you did not do, all that I have asked of you!"
He roughly released my hands and it seemed with a swirl of his dark cape he was gone.
