Chapter Twenty One - Inferno
I stumbled out of the throne and stared at the boy who wore my face, it was identical to the most minute detail. From the jagged chip in his front tooth to the scar spots on his cheeks from popped pimples, he was exactly like me but the only thing that set him apart from me was his vibrant tangerine eyes that pulsed with life like a raging fire. He studied me as I staggered away from him, scanning me like an item on a shelf or an animal in a cage.
"This can't be happening, this isn't real." I thought to myself but the words echoed around in the darkness.
"Trust me, this happening." My doppelgänger chided to me.
"Where am I?" I shouted at him. "Who really are you?"
He sighed disappointedly, "Let me start again. I am you but to remove any confusion you can call me Revilo or just Rev and where we are is in your head."
"This is insane," I muttered.
"What's insane is you ignoring the warnings I gave you. I mean how many dreams of the exact same thing do have to be shown before you see a pattern." Rev paced around me.
"How was I supposed to know that it would happen, it's not like I can see the future."
"How exactly is that so hard to believe. You're sister can heal people and manipulate emotions, why is it so out of the realms of reality for you to have to see some semblances of the future?" he said with slight annoyance while I stared with intense confusion. "Come on don't be an idiot, think about it. Somethings to you have been so predictable. Like in fights, you can almost see the moves happen before they do, well most of the time. You always have." Abruptly the darkness shifted to scenes of my life. Times I guessed multiple choice answers and got A's from them, predicting numbers of candies in a jar to the exact number, every fight that I had been. "Sure, these are small compared to seeing a small army gunning down six teenagers, it doesn't change what you have."
I stood there, slightly dumbfounded. Really trying piece together my slowly fracturing mind. "Okay, what are you then? Are you my conscience or something?"
"Nope, I am you. The part of you formed from... that doesn't really matter. What does matter right now is what is happened out there."
"What's happening outside my head?" I asked.
"This conversation we are having is happening at the tenth of a second which will lead to a headache later but that's beside the point." Rev walked up to me. "We are in a bit of a pickle right now, fiftyish soldier armed to the teeth with military-grade guns about to gun you down..."
"Unless?"
"You give me control of our body. Just to fight them and then you can have it back." He said anxiously.
"What if you get me killed?"
"Trust me, you have a much higher chance of surviving if you give me a chance. I have the most knowledge and understanding of our powers from fire manipulation to future sight, seeing as I've had ample time to practice." He gestured to the space around him. "Besides, what do you have to lose?"
"My life."
"Look out there." The darkness shimmered into the scene outside of my head, bullets piercing through the stone protecting me and my friends, crumbling in slow motion, the look of determination on the faces of the soldiers and there I was. Curled up behind a tombstone, helpless and weak. "Do you think this can protect them?" Rev whispered in my ear.
"Can you really protect them?" I turned to face myself, heaviness in my voice.
"I want to keep them safe as much as you." He looked at me with pleading eyes. "If I wanted to, I could force myself out and save them, but this is easier. Let me do this." He pleaded with me.
I paused, all I could think was Meg was bleeding out on the floor with my sister trying to keep her alive. "Keep them safe. After this, I get full control of my body again."
A tooth grin formed across his face. "This will be fun."
Within the blink of an eye, I was back at the cemetery staring at my body as it opened its eyes revealing the flaming glow of Revilo taking control. He looked bewildered, but when he looked over to his side where Meg still lay in my sister's lap with her life slowly fading away, it changed to pure focus. He wiggled his fingers letting a lick of fire trail their movements, bright and powerful. He slung my backpack his shoulders and yanked out the chain, I could feel him planning his attack systematically. With certainty in his eyes, he stood up. "Everybody stay down." He called out to my friends grabbing their attention, fear in their eyes. "I've got this."
"Oliver! Get down!" Adam shouted to Rev but he didn't listen. He simply vaulted over the tombstone and walked forward. I floated after him without a choice, like a cinematic camera following the main protagonist. Adam called out me one more time, but with a flick of Rev's wrist, a wall of fire burst out of the ground cutting of my friends the battle. The wall wrapped around the cemetery creating a ring of fire trapping the soldiers with my occupied body. Rev continued to push forward through the cemetery with bullets flying with one of them managing to hit my shoulder, I could feel the pain even out of my body, but it merely made Rev angrier. The Transgress jacket I was wearing began to smolder as it burnt from the inside with orange rings growing from random spots around it revealing my nougaty skin. More bullets raced towards him but instead of hitting him they melted mid-air before they could even touch him. The intense heat he gave of killed all the plants around him leaving them ashened and dried out from his presence. Even the chain he held tight in his hand was glowing a bright orange.
A grin grew across his face as he began to sprint towards the soldiers, fear illuminated their eyes as he came at them. The closet soldier tried to fight the flaming boy hand-to-hand, but Rev caught his neck with the chain, the metal steaming as it touched flesh, choking out the scream of the solidier before Rev spun behind the soldier lifted him on his back and tugged on the chain, decapitating the soldier. Total shock filled me as the head rolled to the floor, it was then when i felt it. The intense feeling of bloodthirst exuding from Rev, a remorseless feeling of enjoyment that grew inside of him as he watched the rest of his prey become petrified in fear.
Soldiers fled for the outskirts of the ring and tried to jump outside but the ones that tried disintegrated at the slightest touch of the barrier, but the flames were a gentler death than the one Revilo was going to give them. He used the chain to slice through everything in his path like butter from tombstones to people, reeking absolute chaos. He grabbed a fleeing soldier by the collar and threw them to the ground, they pleaded for their lives and even tried to get on their knees but Rev only held their head still as a torrent of flames spewed out of his mouth leaving only the base of her neck charred on her body. He fought viciously like a feral animal; flames bursting from the palms of his hands, incinerating whatever was moving. Even without the powers, he fought with the vigour of a trained warrior. Rev threw punches and kicks like he spent his whole life watching Bruce Lee movies, moving from one soldier to the next with speed and cruelty, his swift movements made him look a fire dancer with embers trailing his every action. With one hand he grabbed the face of one soldier and the other hand torpedoed a fireball through the chest of another killing them instantly. A muffled scream ripped through the air from the other soldier as he was having face burnt off. When Rev let go all that was left of the soldiers face was a smoking malformed shape of a head made of burnt flesh and grey matter. He chucked the chain forward letting wrap around a soldier's neck and threw his wrist to the side, the force travelled through the chain letting it spin the head off the soldier like it was a Beyblade.
When I saw the remaining soldiers surrounding him a part of me hoped he would surrender, but that was never an option that crossed his mind, the bullets zipped through the air from all angles heading towards him only to melt to puddles the instant they got to close. Rev glanced around at the opponents that trapped him inside their circle of death and all he did was knell to the ground. Slowly all the fire littered across the battlefield even the one surrounding the cemetery started to return to him, collecting in a spiral that grew more and more like the vicious cyclone then like a rocket Rev launched into the air, the flaming tornado at his feet carrying him further into the sky, ripping apart his clothes to expose his bare chest. He was close enough to touch the stars before he began to fall back to earth like a meteor encased in flames, at his palm a ball of fire grew to the size of a car and as he hit the ground the fireball erupted into a tsunami fire that engulfed everything in its path but stopped before it could reach the place where my friends were still hiding.
The grass had been scorched to ash that gathered in the wind, blacked ground surrounded the crater where my body slowly rose from the flames and smoke like a demon emerging from hell. He stood in the centre of the calamity, content with what he had accomplished, the only thing left of his clothing was the tattered and burnt remains of the Transgress pants. Rev turned his head and looked at me, our eyes connecting through the smoke. Like a shift in perspective, it became me standing the crater surrounded by carnage. I shakily lifted up my hands to my face to the stained in dried blood and matter, in incoherent noise left my mouth, broken and choked.
"That was exhilarating." Rev's voice rattled in my head with excitement.
"What did you do?" The words barely leaving my mouth as my knees gave way to the weight of what he had done.
"What do you mean? I did exactly what I said I would do." He said, truly not knowing what he had done wrong.
"You killed them."
"What did you think I would do, hug them all until they let us leave? Don't be naïve, there was only one way we would get out of this and this was it." His agitation filled my body
"You massacred them. Some tried to surrender and you just killed them."
"They signed up to join a fascist group, they knew they would be fighting people that were far more superior than them. This was their death wish, I was just the one who granted it." His voice was sure and set. "I'm tired so I'm going to disappear."
"You better not Revilo," I called out to my other personality with no answer, my voice cracking. "Rev. Rev!" I shouted to myself, alone in a crater of my own creation. Waves of anger and sorrow broke me down, chipping away me. Tears burned down my cheeks as my anxiety built up in my chest like a ball of solid steel, expanding to fly out my chest. The sounds of moving crumbling dirt came from above me and when I looked up with my eyes full of tears to see the last person I would expect, Adam.
He skidded down the side of the crater and ran up to me. His electric eyes glowing with worry, his golden hair flopping around as he made his way to me. "Oliver, are you okay?" He slid to his knees and inspected me.
At first i couldn't say anything, I just stared at him with tear filled eyes and weighted breath , my lips quivering too much to get words out in fear of what they might be. "What have I done?" I finally croaked as Adam took off his jacket and put it around my shoulder.
"You did what you had to. You've been shot but you'll be fine, Meg isn't looking too good though. The bullet went through her but she's lost a lot of blood, we need to get her somewhere." He spoke softer then I have ever heard him speak. He spoke from a place of compassion and understanding, even the way he looked at me was remorseful.
"I didn't want this to happen. Please believe me, i didn't mean for this. " I whimpered and then he unexpectedly grabbed my head and placed it into his shoulder.
"I know Oli, I know. Sometimes we do things to save people at the expense of a part of ourselves." He whispered into my ear as he held me closer.
But it felt like the opposite. There was a new part of me inside. An inferno.
