Chapter Thirty Four - The Ties that Bind
After the mess of a meeting, I decided to take walk around the island. Take a break from people, specifically Cory, and everything for a while and just get a breath. Everywhere I went though, people thanked me and welcomed me back 'home'. It was weird, to say the least, having people I didn't know talk to me about me like they knew me. About how I helped them, how I set an example and I just nodded and smiled like some kind of idiot. After a while, I managed to find a trail through the snow and trees that took me across the cliffs and coast of the island. The sea whistled as it ran up the cliffside, each wave crashing against the rocks sending ripples through my brain like an auditory massage. In the distance, sitting on the edge of the cliff was an unstable crocked bench that stared off towards the beautiful Vancouver skyline. The bench's lust for danger called to me to take a seat and enjoy the moment.
Once I was seated, I felt this unexplainable relaxing feeling almost calling me to melt between the planks of wood that made the bench. I took a deep inhale, feeling the salty air nipping my lungs, before letting it all out in the wind.
"Rev, we need to talk about the body-snatching stuff."
"I already apologized for it, why are we bringing this up again?" He said with slight agitation.
"Yes, I know but we need to set boundaries. You can't just take the body from me, but it doesn't mean you can't use it either."
"What are you trying to say?" He asked, genuine mystification in his tone.
"Well, since we're stuck together and we've sorted the whole angry at each other thing,"
"It was mostly you being angry with me but continue."
"I mean I had good reasoning, you killed people but it's okay and I'm coming to terms with that. Anyways, what I am trying to say is that we can work out something where you can get time in the body so that you aren't throwing me out of control."
"Are you being serious or is this some kind of prank."
"I'm being serious, it's weird but it seems unfair to have you just come out when I need you, but there are some ground rules."
"Always a caveat." He moaned.
"Oh shush, firstly, no killing. You can find another way to get out of a situation that doesn't involve someone's death. Secondly, no long trips without the okay from both of us. I don't want to go to sleep in my bed and end up in Japan or something. Finally, nothing weird. I don't want to come back into the body with nipple piercings and a wife with three kids."
"But what about Dolores and two kids, I told them I'd be a good dad to them?" He spoke in a higher-pitched voice to mock me before letting out a little laugh. "You don't have to do this, you know."
"I'm well aware but if anything it will help us understand each other better and stop the body-snatching stuff," I replied, smiling at the water far below.
"First you take my room and then you take my quiet place." Stephanie's voice called out from behind me as she approached with Juan trudging beside her.
"Of course, you have to claim something I like. I can never keep anything for myself." I scoffed as I scooted up for them to have space. "How are you guys holding up?"
"Akari just bribed me with a family heirloom and now I'm going to go find my mother who pretty much abandoned me nine years ago," Juan said nonchalantly.
"That's a lot to take in, I was just going to say that I got myself a croissant," Stephy said as she brushed off some crumbs that still sat on her winter coat.
"You good?" I asked.
"I will be, but I don't want to think about it. What have you been doing, just walking around?"
"Just talking to myself."
"Get any good conversation?" My sister asked.
"Yeah, well that's something I wanted to bring up with you guys. It feels easier to bring up slowly to people so I didn't bring it up when we were with everyone but this is as good a time as any."
"Well, I doubt it can be as shocking as the existence of the afterlife." Stephy pointed out with a light giggle.
"Okay then, do you remember when I said that I wasn't in control of myself at Deckard Cemetery?"
Their faces soured slightly. Clearly, the topic still had a bad taste in their mouths. "Oliver, we know that you did what you had to do. We aren't angry." Juan said in hopes to try and console me.
"I know but that's not what I'm talking about. What I'm saying is that I genuinely did not have control."
"I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean?"
"It's probably easier if he just talks to you," I said while turning inwards to Rev.
"You're really putting me on the spot here."
"We have to tell them eventually." I pointed out. He groaned as I let go of control and let him take over. I floated over the edge of the cliff as he opened his orange eyes hesitantly. Stephy and Juan looked at him puzzled before he spoke.
"Hi, I'm Rev. It's nice to officially meet you." He said with a trying smile, I could feel the worry roll off him in cascades.
"Are you trying to say that you have multiple personalities?" Juan asked.
"Yes, Oliver is the one you are always talking to but I'm in there too. I was the one who killed all the people in the cemetery, I won't apologize for saving you but I do feel bad for killing them. If you do want to be mad at anyone, you can be mad at me but I will say that I was the one who dropped through the skylight and saved you from Vortex so do with that information as you will."
Stephy stared at him carefully, looking into his eyes as if they were the most entrancing thing she had seen, and then there was this wave of sadness that she exuded before covering it up. "Hello Rev, it's nice to meet you too. Just so you know, I don't blame either of you anymore."
"Everyone is so quick to believe this. Almost takes the surprise out of it." Rev lightened up, loosening his body.
"Once again, Heaven and Hell are still pretty up there on the most shocking things to here."
"You have a point."
"It doesn't really matter if there is one of you or nineteen of you in there. I'm just glad to have my brother back. Or brothers. This is going to take some time to get used to."
On hearing that, Rev tried to cover up a smile that went from cheek to cheek. "Take all the time you need."
"We'll if anything, that just means I have another movie buddy. Speaking of, you have a lot of marvel stuff to catch up on." Juan placed his hand on his shoulder.
"It's been nine months; it can't be that bad." Rev joked.
Stephy snickered. "Good luck, you're in for a treat."
There was something about watching them interact that made me feel happy. Maybe these were Rev's emotions that I was feeling but, to be honest, it didn't matter if it was either of ours. Any kind of disdainful emotions I had held for him seemed so far away in hindsight because all I could see for him was a part of me. He cared for Stephy like I did, joked with Juan the same as I would and though it would seem like it would make anyone jealous, it was knowing that all of them were happy and safe that kept any kind of thoughts like those impossible to think about. Sure, there were obstacles ahead, we still had to find Eliza before we get sent back to Hell and still stave away Transgress' attacks but I felt less worried about it. I felt hopeful for once. The future didn't seem so dark.
