Chapter 7
A new day should be the beginning of something bigger and better at least for Ricky. This morning wasn't as eventful as the previous morning as he already did his morning routine and ate his breakfast at the café. He looks at his phone to see how many days he has left before he returns to America, which will create more dullness and boredom. He knows that he can't overstay his visa, so he must abide by the visa's rules. A piece of paper mysteriously slips through the door as Ricky continues to look through his itinerary. He gets up to see the piece of paper and opens it:
Jewel Kadibil's Beach/Pool Party
Next Saturday at 19:00
Palm Villa
Broome, WA
Australia
Unable to figure out what 19:00 meant, he goes to his laptop to figure out the meaning, where it's 7:00 pm in Australia. Assuming that England is the only country that uses it, he never imagined Australia doing the same. Despite that, he places the invitation in his bag and calls his family.
As he waits for his family to answer, he goes to the bathroom to lather sunscreen on his body. The dread of creating more freckles from the sun from his childhood creeps in since his travels with his parents involved scorching temperatures with Australia being one of those places. Though Australia is a hot country especially in the Outback area, Broome isn't as hot as the other cities in the country.
"Hello?" his grandmother calls from a distance, causing him to run to his laptop.
"Hey, Grandma. How are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm doing great, dear. What about you?" she asked.
"Hey, it's Richard! Tell me everything!" his grandfather exclaimed.
"You told him?" he asked with his eyes wide open and his mouth slightly open.
"Your parents and I told him. Once we told him, he wanted to know every little detail." His grandmother said.
"Okay, then. He can come over." He spoke.
"Carlton! Your grandson wants to speak to you!" his grandmother shouts.
"Caroline! I'm not deaf! I'm coming." His grandfather grunts.
"I'll leave you two alone." His grandmother persuaded before walking away.
He waits for his grandfather as he hears footsteps in the background. It's been a week since he last spoke to his grandfather. He spoke to everyone else but him and isn't sure why he hadn't been part of the conversation.
"Hey, Richard." His grandfather greeted.
"Hey, Grandpa. Are you okay? You weren't a part of the conversation yesterday." He asked.
"I had the stomach flu. I might have eaten something undercooked." He replied.
"Oh, my goodness! I didn't know, but I'm glad you're feeling better." He sighed.
"Me too. How's Broome treating you?" He asked.
"It's pretty nice though I haven't explored much of the city yet." He replied.
"Who's this girl that your parents and grandmother keep telling me about? You know, at the hotel café?" He wondered.
"Her name is Jewel Kadibil. She suffered a panic attack and I decided to help her when no one else didn't bother to help her." He explained.
"That's sweet of you! Were you able to have a conversation with her?" He asked.
"Yes, we talked about everything. Well, not everything. Just introducing ourselves, that kind of stuff. After that, she handed me her phone number." He retold the story.
"And you meet her at a crocodile park hours after that? I don't know, Richard, that seems a little too quick." He hesitates.
"Yes. We had fun at the park; we took pictures of the crocodiles and ourselves and she drove me back to the hotel because she had a rental car." He spoke.
"I knew there was something that made Australians the nicest people in the world." His grandfather wags his finger in confirming his suspicions.
"She's cool. She invited me to a party that's happening this afternoon, fingers crossed that she'll be there." He hoped.
"Where will be this party be? I hope it's not at her house because you only knew her for a day." He raises his eyebrows.
"Oh no, of course not. It's going to be at the beach." He spoke.
"Good because you don't want to end up in a stranger's house and not know where you're getting into now, don't you?" He asked.
"No, Grandpa. I would never want that to happen. I always bring my phone with me wherever I go." He insists.
"Fine. Now that I know who Jewel is, she's in good hands. You did your morning routine and ate breakfast, right?" He asked.
"Of course, I don't forget to do that." He smiles though he sometimes does when he's in a rush.
"Good, Richard. Make sure you arrive 15 minutes early with Jewel depending on her schedule, don't drink alcohol, don't overeat, and more importantly, stay safe and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Do I make myself clear on that?" he warned.
"Yes, Grandpa." He sighs, knowing his grandfather still hasn't forgotten about his actions from Beach Week where he nearly got arrested for public intoxication while partying with John and Frank at a nightclub in Myrtle Beach.
"I should see what your parents are doing. Remember what I said." He said, pointing his finger at him.
"Yes, I know. I know." He rolls his eyes to prevent a long lecture about being safe in a different country from his grandfather.
"Okay, I love you, Richard." His grandfather slightly smiles before hanging up.
He lays back for a minute before getting back up to read a book from his suitcase. He has an hour before the party begins. Meeting Jewel's friends and getting a better idea of who Jewel was around others. The last party that Ricky attended nearly ended in disaster and a near arrest for public intoxication despite his friends' protest to not have too much alcohol. Giving into having fun and trying to fit in with society's way of partying hard, he had more alcohol than everyone else at the club, causing him to vomit on himself and the other guests once leaving, making everyone call the police. Praying that going to another party will run smoothly, he grabs a water bottle as an alternative to alcohol and texts Jewel, Hey. What time do you think we should meet outside?
He packs his sunglasses and towel and heads to the bathroom to change into his swimwear in case he will need to swim. He hears a ping, causing him to run and read it, How about 11:25? You can meet me and my friends will come over shortly after. Is that cool with you? He writes back, I'm good with that.
He puts on his sandals when another ding enters loudly. He reads, Sick! I'll meet you at 11:25. Sighing in relief, he grabs his bag and phone and heads out of his room to go to the same café where he had breakfast and met Jewel. The route isn't as complicated as previous days since being somewhat accustomed to how the Broome locals carry themselves and live life to the fullest.
15 minutes go by and a somewhat eventful one where a man passed out flyers to go to Cable Beach for the party. What he thought was a party for a few people became a public party across Broome. He reads a text, Hey, Ricky. Meet me outside the hotel entrance. He looks outside and sees three women outside. One wave at him, leaving him bewildered to head out to see why she's waving at him.
He runs out of the door and bumps into the woman, causing the woman to panic. He collects his things and helps the woman up.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm sorry for bumping into you." he persuaded.
"Are you Ricky Barnes?" the woman continues to pant.
"Yes. How do you know my name?" Ricky asked, looking around.
"I'm Jewel's best friend. Jewel told us about you." the woman said, finally calming down.
"Us?" Ricky asked.
"I'm Roxanne and this is Jessica and Kay." The woman introduced everyone.
"Well, it's nice meeting you guys." Ricky shook their hands individually.
"It's nice to meet you too." Jessica and Kay said together.
Noticing that Roxanne's accent is different from the Western Australian accent compared to Jessica and Kay's, he couldn't pinpoint the regional dialect in her voice.
"Hey, Roxanne. Not to be rude, where are you from?" Ricky asked.
"I'm from Melbourne, but currently live in Newman because my mum's from there," Roxanne said.
"Oh, wow. How is Newman compared to Melbourne?" Ricky asked.
"I go to Melbourne during the summer, but I love Newman more. It helps me become closer to my mother and her heritage." Roxanne slightly smiles.
"Where's your mom from?" Ricky asked.
"She's Aboriginal. I'm biracial because of my Scottish father." Roxanne said, hoping he doesn't fetishize her race.
"That's cool. What about you guys?" Ricky asked, turning to Jessica and Kay.
"We're both from Newman. We're Aboriginal as well." Kay said.
"That's great. Are you guys ready for the party?" Ricky asked, shaking hyperactively.
"I'm ready to go, we're just waiting for Jewel," Jessica said.
"How long have you guys known Jewel?" Ricky asked.
"We've known her since childhood. She was a bit weird in the beginning, but once you get to know her, she's a cool person." Kay replied.
The gang grabs their phones to keep themselves occupied until Jewel makes a didgeridoo-type noise from behind.
"What the hell, Jewel? I thought that was someone's car making that noise!" He shook in shock as Jewel laughs.
"Come on, let's go! The beach is not far from here!" Roxanne exclaimed as everyone followed suit.
Ricky looks around and runs to catch up with the gang. Just when the unexpected events would subside, it keeps on happening. When will these events be in place for Ricky? His quest to know Jewel more is just beginning and the party might test that.
