Chapter 15

After Ricky allows his dominant emotions to subside, he hears his computer ring again. He wipes his tears and slowly gets up to see who it is. Assuming his friends were still on, he quickly puts on clothes since he came with a towel. It was already embarrassing that he focused his attention on contacting his loved ones without even looking at himself despite washing off the camping odor.

The computer continues ringing and with his shirt halfway on, he limps himself out of the bathroom and sees Jewel's name on the screen. He immediately sits down and answers the call.

"G'day mate, how are you going?" Jewel greeted.

"I'm okay, how are you?" Ricky greeted back.

"I'm...okay."  Jewel hesitates, hand-combing her wavy hair.

"Are you all right? Did something happen?" Ricky asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just woke up." Jewel smiles timidly, knowing that she's internally hurting.

"That's good. Hey, do you want to go out on Thursday? If you're not busy?" Ricky asked.

"Um, let me check my schedule." Jewel gets up and walks off as Ricky waits. While Jewel is absent, Ricky pulls out his phone to play Flow Free. Some paths were easy, while other paths were difficult that they became repetitive. Like the puzzle, this could apply to Jewel's relationship to Maude: she abuses her, she does everything to distance herself, and comes back to her. He continues to attempt the difficult paths until he stopped when he heard a chair creak.

"Hey, Ricky!" Jewel exclaimed.

"So, you're available on Thursday?" Ricky asked.

"Thursday is the only day I'm available. Before the party, anyway. The days before Thursday are just mainly for friends." Jewel smiles.

"That's good! Jewel, are you sure you're okay?" Ricky asked, scratching his head while containing his excitement.

"Ricky, I told you I'm fine. I get you're trying to look after me, but I'm going to be okay. Don't worry too much." Jewel chuckles.

"I want to be there for you, but I can't be there for you if you're not being honest with me." Ricky groaned.

"I'm being honest with you. I know what I'm doing, okay?" Jewel argued defensively.

The sentence alone made Ricky not push any further despite his best efforts. Her defensive nature, though puzzling, just had to wait to be broken. At least for now. The more Ricky asked, the more defensive and closed-off Jewel will be. Ricky backs away from the questioning about Maude and moves to asking simple questions.

"How did you enjoy the camping trip?" Ricky asked.

"It was good thanks to you and my friends. Without that, it would have been a snooze-fest." Jewel smiles now that Ricky stopped asking her about Maude.

"That's good to know. As long as you enjoyed it, that's all that matters. The swimming and being close to nature was extremely beautiful and being technology-free was also cool." Ricky smiles since Jewel is smiling now.

Jewel leans forward to her computer to be more engaged with Ricky. Since meeting him, she could be around him even if he annoys her with the constant line of questioning. Ricky might be a curious fellow but his curiosity can go so far. The kind of curiosity where the information can be limited or unknown like an unsolved murder. They always say curiosity killed the cat, but sometimes curiosity can be a good thing for some people.

"Technology just would have made the trip an awkward silence kind of situation. Technology can be complicated to say the least." Jewel rambled.

"You're right, it's just complicated. It's cool to disconnect from the screen for a while." Ricky agreed.

Jewel claps her hands in agreement, especially as the true Aussie she is, because Australia is known more for their outdoor activities than anything else. Maybe that's the reason why Americans are attracted to go to the country. Despite Maude being a challenge, Jewel along with her family and the other locals are willing to accept him because that's what Australians do for the tourists.

"The only time I ever use technology are for emails and basically promote a brand, you know." Jewel turns her tone into a serious one after the initial excitement took over.

"I nearly forgot that you're a model. I almost forgot about that." Ricky instantly remembers their first meeting.

"It's okay. In fact, it doesn't even matter. Enough about me, how's life going for you?" Jewel asked.

"It's uneventful besides school, acting, family, friends, and general pain of adulthood." Ricky complained.

"Yet you're here on holiday? Mate, the last thing you did was go to a party at Cable Beach and go camping! That should count for something." Jewel wags her finger in disagreement.

"I know, but there's just something missing." Ricky clarified.

"Which is?" Jewel interjects.

"I don't know what it is, but it's hard to pinpoint it." Ricky points his finger in different directions.

"Well, let me know what it is because everything will fall into place eventually." Jewel reassured.

Ricky may have had many insecurities in his life with some being extinguished and Maude still ongoing, but at least he has support from his family and friends to get him through it. The two continue their conversation until the afternoon transforms into the early evening.

"Well, it was nice talking to you. We're still on for Thursday, right?" Ricky asked.

"We're still on for Thursday. I'll see you on-" Jewel changes her expression as loud footsteps approaches her room and Ricky quickly hangs up, knowing what's going to happen.

Closing his laptop, he lays down on his bed to watch TV without caring about what to watch. Escapism was more important with something nearly or almost good coming instantly crashing down with bad people or something bad involving the implosion.
