Chapter 14

With everyone's belongings neatly placed in the trunk and everyone tightly secured in Desmond's car as Desmond drives Ricky back to his hotel. Hugh plays with his phone as Joel attempt to figure out what to say to Ricky. He can empathize with his new relationship struggles, but at the end of the day, he wasn't his therapist or guidance counselor since he already has his own life to prioritize.

"Hey, you're very quiet, Ricky. Are you all right, mate?" Desmond asked, looking at the top mirror to see Ricky close his eyes in defeat.

"I'm fine, Desmond. It's... I'm okay." Ricky scoffs, not wanting to admit his defeat just yet.

"Is it about Jewel? Because if it's about Jewel-" Joel rambles before Ricky raises his hand to stop him.

"Look mate, I went through what you're going through right now, but ignoring everything else isn't going to make anything better." Joel continued, preventing Ricky from arguing with him.

Ricky looks out of the window to see the Australian nature, tuning out the conversations from the three passengers with the only priority in his mind to talk to his family and friends since there are a few people on his side about his intentions. Everything that seemed to go well for Ricky always tend to go awry for whatever reason. At least his family and friends could give their honest opinion about the situation. He would have to wait to deal with Jewel and her family later on.

"Hey, Ricky. Don't worry, Jewel is going fine." Joel reassures.

"I know." Ricky spoke meekly without looking at Joel.

As the drive continued, he ignores everyone as he continues to look at the window. Even in a peaceful country, there will always be dark undertones or overtones depending one's point of view. Being in love for the second time, he was dealing with a complex issue that he can't dive deep into, something that was subtle and hard to detect.

After the crew arrive at the hotel, Ricky gets out of the car only for Hugh to stop him to assist him. Ricky backs away as Hugh pulls out some of his belongings.

"Now, are you sure you're going to be okay?" Desmond asked.

Ricky nods his head yes, making it firm he's not changing his mind. The only thing on his mind was his loved ones; the mobile connection couldn't make up for lost connection with the camping trip being Internet free. While it was a good thing that nature was the main goal of the trip, the isolation and negativity clouded his grasp on reality.

"Hey Ricky, I pulled out all of your stuff." Hugh pants in exhaustion.

"Thank you, Hugh." Ricky sighed emotionless.

"If you need anything, call us, mate." Hugh said with Ricky remaining silent.

He grabs his belongings and waves goodbye at the gang, knowing he'll see them again at the party in the coming week. Will the party help repair his relationship with Jewel's father if the argument didn't happen? Only he can make that decision.

He silently walks inside the hotel with his belongings in tow and carefully held to his room key so he wouldn't get locked out with his stuff in his room. The thought of Maude possibly doing more than just putting Jewel's life at risk couldn't escape his soul despite the warnings from everyone to suppress it as he paces around the elevator. Thankfully, he was the only person in the elevator so he wouldn't draw attention to himself. Why does everything seem to go wrong when it almost seemed right? He continued to pacing around the elevator until the elevator opens to his door with the people waiting to go down, looking on in confusion. He runs out of the elevator with people still having their attention on him.

He continues to run until he places his card on the door. He opens the door and collapses on his bed with his thoughts, ignoring the task of everything else. The family and friends could wait. He'd hope to speak with them right away, but his body is paralyzed with fear and confusion. Jewel, Maude, and the questioning of whether he fell hard too quickly nearly consumes him until he snaps out of his feelings to remove his belongings and change his clothes, noticing the odor coming from his shirt. Forgetting to clean himself up before leaving, he runs to the bathroom to shower.

After his shower, he open his laptop to call his family on Skype. Despite him being undressed with a towel wrapped around him, it didn't matter since everything that's important is always number one. He rubs his hair messily to make his hair look neat for his family.

"Hi, my Lindy baby!" Morgan exclaims as the call starts.

"Mom, please! Not now!" Ricky groans.

"Why, what's wrong? Did something happen at the camping trip?" Morgan asked.

"It's complicated." Ricky continued groaning.

"Oh, I know what it is! Someone got sick or hurt during the trip, huh?" Duke concluded.

Ricky nods his head as Morgan and Duke look each other in shock and Caroline and Carl entering the picture.

"Morgan, honey, what's going on?" Caroline asked.

Morgan doesn't answer her mother as Caroline and Carl look at each other, discovering that something was up. Caroline turns her attention to Ricky for answers.

"Did something happen to Jewel?" Caroline asked.

Ricky nods his head with his family gasping in shock. The family may not have met Jewel, but based on Ricky's description of who she was, she seemed like a nice person in their eyes but they knew something was seriously wrong.

"What happened?" Carl asked.

"She's...um, she's being abused." Ricky trails off.

"Ricky, I... I don't know what to say." Duke said, looking down.

"What do you think I should do?" Ricky's voice begins to break.

"OK, first off, did you fight back against her abuser?" Duke asked.

"Yes, only because I couldn't stand there and let her constantly degrade her. Everyone else have unsuccessfully stood up for her." Ricky exclaimed, causing Duke to shake his head in disbelief.

"Richard, dear, I'm sure everyone at the trip told you that you had good intentions, but fighting back against the abuser wasn't a good idea." Caroline said as Duke continued his head.

"What should I have done, then?" Ricky asked.

"Well, it's complicated." Caroline said.

"I would say give Jewel time to be open with you. She has friends and family who cares about her, right?" Carl wondered.

"Yeah, but as I said, they're too scared to do anything." Ricky repeated.

"Well, she needs a supportive partner who doesn't have a savior complex. You're not her father or babysitter." Caroline said.

"What if the abuse gets worse?" Ricky asked.

"As I said, it's complicated. Give it time and everything will be okay. It's going to be okay, Richard, I promise." Carl said.

"I...I feel like it might." Ricky cries.

"Give it time. Don't rush it, okay?" Morgan said.

"So basically, wait for Jewel to be open?" Ricky repeated.

"Yes, you have a good heart, but I don't want you to have a broken heart the second time around. Everyone deserves love, but it will be all worth it. Your father and I have been through it and if we can get through it, so can you." Morgan reassured.

"Okay, I'll try to do that. Thanks for your help." Ricky looks down.

"No problem. That's why we're here. I love you." Morgan smiles.

"I love you too." Ricky smiles, wiping his tears.

"I want to meet Jewel one day. Make sure that happens, dear." Caroline said.

"Hopefully. I love you guys." Ricky said.

"We love you too, dear." Caroline greeted before hanging up.

Ricky clicks on his friend group chat excluding Bailey since this time, it would be better not to drag Bailey into his new romance problems. Unless she was interested, that's where the privacy will stand between the two.

"Hey, Ricky. What's going on, man?" Frank asked.

"Not so good. I'm very concerned about Jewel." Ricky replied.

"Why? What's wrong with her?" John asked.

"She's being abused and I'm scared for her safety." Ricky whimpers.

"Oh my God! That's horrible!" John shrieks.

"I know a solution: Give it time and don't be pushy!" Frank suggests.

"Great, my parents said the exact same thing!" Ricky groaned.

Frank and John look at each other as Ricky continues to groans and nearly pull out his hair. Even his own friends seem to not have the best solution, but at least they were honest with him. The only thing his family and friends share in common is wanting the best for Jewel, whose life could be in danger unless someone takes action. The last thing everyone wants is Jewel being dead from Maude's abuse.

"Um, look, Ricky. I don't know what to say other than don't aggravate the abuser. You've done that, right?" John asked.

"Yes, unfortunately." Ricky groans again.

"I hate to say told you so, but I told you so. You should have listened to your instincts." John said.

"John, you're not helping. This is serious." Ricky rolls his eyes in annoyance.

"I'm taking this seriously. The problem is that you have a good heart, but you're quick to act before you think. You do realize that you're her partner, not her bodyguard." John said before realizing his mistake.

"Dude, she doesn't need a bodyguard! She's got plenty of them, she's the freaking princess of Australia, for Christ's sake!" Frank argued.

"That's for only one part of Australia, you idiot! Australia has a Prime Minister!" John argued back.

"Who cares? She's still royalty!" Frank shouts.

"None of that matters! I only care about Jewel for Jewel, not for what she has. So, stop mentioning her status!" Ricky freaks out.

"Look, sorry. Obviously, we're all concerned for her, just don't go too far or use creepy tactics. Girls don't like that." John said.

"I know, I know. You guys somewhat were helping, I don't know what to do." Ricky groaned.

"We appreciate you asking and honestly, that's all the advice we could give you. I wish we knew as well, but yeah." Frank said.

"Gee, thanks. That was the only encouragement I needed." Ricky dazes off at their optimism.

"Hey, Ricky. Things will work out, I promise." Frank assures as Ricky doesn't say any more words to his friends.

As the silence lingers, Ricky gets up and goes to the bathroom as he allows his emotions to get the better of himself. His friends were left to disappear in the background and couldn't wait any longer. The advice from his family and friends will take a while to ponder before anything could move forward.
