Grieving
Three days. Three days since he died. I hadn't come out of my room. Answered my phone. I didn't go to school. Aunt Mary didn't force it. She was struggling with it just as much as I was, if not even more. The third day I had finally decided to come down stairs and be with her. The house wasn't as cheerful as it used to be. Thing's were different now. Load's of silence.
Day four. News had spread about Uncle Bob and I didn't want to go to school. But Aunt Mary made me. I hadn't seen or talked to Peter or Gwen since before the accident. Peter of course had tried to come over. I was in my room and Aunt Mary tried to tell me I needed him, I needed friend's during this hard time. But I couldn't do it. I was filled with so much guilt. I felt as though I deserved nothing. I could have stopped that guy. I could have stayed home. So many scenarios on what I could have done to prevent his death went through my head.
I walked into the school, head down, and I could feel all the stares as I walked through the hall's. I stood by my locker, putting my backpack inside it.
"Hey, Barrett." Flash called out from down the hall. I didn't turn I didn't look. I was not in the mood for him today.
"Not today, Flash." I mumbled.
"Hey, come on. I just want to talk." His hand touched my shoulder and in the blink of an eye. I had him pinned up against the locker.
The student's around us gasped and watched what was happening. I stared up at him as he stared back down at me.
"It feel's better right?" He asked and I narrowed my eyes. "Look, your Uncle died. I'm sorry. I get it. I'm so sorry. Okay?"
As he apologized, I had slowly let him down and let go. I grabbed my bag and shut my locker. Walking away through the hallway's filled with murmurs. I nearly made it to the end when I was stopped by Gwen.
"Cate..." She wrapped her arms around me and I shrugged her off.
"Cate?" Peter called out softly. I looked up from the bench I was sitting on and got up to walk away. "Wait, wait. Don't go. I know you're struggling right now..." He said and I stopped walking. I didn't turn around, only listened. "I'm sorry about Uncle Bob... I-I can't imagine what your going through. But, don't push me away. Let me be there for you."
He had reached me at the last of his sentence and carefully put a hand on my shoulder. I felt the tears I didn't think I could cry anymore, slip from my eyes as he turned me around and wrapped his arms around me. I let them fall. I sobbed into his chest, being held in his arm's. Peter stroked my hair and laid his head on top of mine. No other's word's were spoken or needed. I just needed the momentary comfort. As soon as I was done, he let me go and I walked home. I wasn't gonna be able to do this today.
When I got home Aunt Mary was asleep on the couch. I put a blanket over her and went up to my room. I sat on my bed with every guilty thought running through my mind. That man was still out there. The only way I felt that I could feel better was to do what I could. To track him down and get the revenge that I so desperately desired. I grabbed a gray beanie and tucked my pony tail into it. I put on my jacket and pulled up the collar. I snuck out my window and walked through the town at night.
I might be a 5'5 foot girl, but I knew my new found strength wasn't gonna let me down. But that was the problem. I got cocky.
As I walked through the town, I saw down an alley. A man pinning a woman against the brick wall. I could see the blonde hair under his beanie and I went after him.
"Listen, stay away, understand?" He yelled at the woman. "Stay away from Joey."
"Hey!" I shouted.
The man turned and looked at me. He let go of the woman and began walking toward's me.
"You like beating on girl's? How about beating up old men?" I called out as he got closer.
"Just keep walking, honey. You're in the wrong place."
I walked up to him. Meeting him half way and shoved his shoulders.
"When was the last time you were in queens?" He grunted as he was pushed and his eyes got big. "I asked you a question." I stalked toward's him and he pulled a gun out and pointed it at me.
"Nicky, no!" the woman cried.
"Is that the gun?" I asked, as I grabbed his hand and twisted it easily away from me. Making him groan in pain. "You gonna kill me, too?"
I punched him in the face making the woman behind me scream. I lifted him up easily and threw away from me and he slammed against the brick wall. I walked toward's him and someone else came up from behind and tried to hit me with a bat. Easily sensing him, I swung my leg out and knocked him off his feet. Two more guys came at me. One got his hand's around me and held me, as another guy punched my face. I grabbed his hands and lunged my body forward, tossing him over my body and into the other guy. My beanie fell off and my blonde hair spilled out. The men and woman looked at me stunned.
"This chick is crazy!" The woman yelled.
"Get her!" One of the men yelled.
I picked up my hat and ran. I felt one get close and try to grab me. I jumped up reaching for a pole. I grabbed it and used my feet to push off the wall, flipping over the head of the man as he lunged. I ran forward again and jumped up on some old pallet's, grabbed the wall and swung myself over the large gate that blocked off the rest of the alley.
"What is with this kid?"
"Get back here, little girl!"
"Get her!"
They all called out as I ran. I took a quick peak behind me and saw that one of the men had made it over the fence. I kept running and jumped off some boxes, onto a drain pipe, easily able to attach myself to it. I began climbing up the side of the large building as the men below shouted at me. Calling me name's.
"Freak!"
"Go around, man! I'll follow you!"
I climbed up as much as I could on the drain pipe. I looked beside me at the next building. There wasn't anything beside me except wall. I took a deep breath and prayed it would work. I jumped over to it and stuck to it with ease. I smiled at myself for a minute and then the voices of the men below caught my attention. I began crawling up the side of the wall until I finally reached the roof. I looked at the exit door and walked over to it.
It opened as one of the men chasing me appeared. I quickly turned on my heel and scrambled up and away from him.
"Go, go, go!"
"There she is!"
I ran across the small roof and jumped onto the small metal fire escape connecting the two building's. The man behind me easily followed and I ran in between the building. Jumping from each wall to the other. I hung from one side and as the man tried to lunge for me, I reached down and punched him in the face. More of the men showed up as I tried to climb onto the next roof. One of them grabbed my foot, and I kicked him away with my other.
I stood on top of the roof, and the blonde man I originally went after finished climbing up the escape ladder to the building next to mine. I looked at him and the distance and made a quick decision to run and jump across. I caught myself on the edge of the other roof and pulled myself up. I ran at him and he tried to swing at me. I ducked and threw my arm at his feet knocking him over. He fell towards the edge of the building, and I reached down grabbing his left hand. I pulled down his jacket sleeve and checked. There was no star tattoo.
I looked at the man wide eyed and he looked at me terrified as he dangled for his life, by my hand. I grabbed his other hand and pulled him back up to the roof. Setting his hand's on the edge, so he wouldn't be able to come after me. The other men were on the other roof and looked at me.
"Oh, yeah? Come on!" He shouted.
I turned away and walked forward. The roof beneath me collapsed and I fell down into the building below. I gasped as I fell and landed with a hard thud to the ground. I laid there stunned for a second trying to catch my breath. I pressed my forehead onto the floor below me.
"I know what you look like! You hear me?!" The men from upstairs yelled. "I've seen your face!"
I groaned and picked myself up slowly. When I looked up I saw that was in a boxing ring. I shook out my arms, and twisted my head to fix my neck. As my head turned, I turned my body and looked at the first poster that had caught my eye. A masked wrestler, with a red and black mask. I thought about what the man had yelled and a brilliant idea popped into my big brain. I knew I couldn't risk anyone else seeing the real me, if I was going to go on my little revenge tour.
So I went home and started drawing. I copied down the mask I saw at the wrestling ring, and started getting inspired from that. Peter and Gwen watched everyday at school, how I kept to myself and drew out something. Every time Peter tried to talk to me about it, I'd push him away, keep him at a distance. I never let anyone see what I was doing. I snuck out every night and put on my temporary mask I had made.
"Is that all you got?"
"Just take it, take it."
A man was being robbed by a suspect that fit my description. I snuck up in the shadows and tore him away from the man. Pinning him against the wall and I checked his wrist. No tattoo.
Walking around was getting me almost no where. Not as fast as I'd liked at least. I couldn't possibly move around fast enough to search for the criminal who killed Uncle Bob. So, I did the next best thing and came up with an idea to move around faster. I took my spider idea and researched the webbing I knew Oscorp was making that I had seen the day I had been bitten.
"Engineered from genetically enhanced spider's, Oscorp's biocable tensile strength is unparalleled. We're just beginning to understand all the potential industrial applications."
I order a case and got to work.
"A single pellet can store several hundred meters of the lightweight cable."
I studied the cable pellet's and took apart and old watch I found in the basement. I used the watch as a base and placed the pellet inside it. It took a few tries and miscalculations. Lot's of shocking and webbing to the face later, I'd done it. I shot out a web and flicked it with my finger. The strength was incredible. I was amazing even myself. I made my first set of real web shooter's. Now to test them.
