Embarrassing Flash
We were at school one day in the gym. I was with Peter and we were making banner's for the upcoming game and dance. And he was playing around with his camera. The basketball team was running around the gym, playing practice run's.
"Run it, buddy."
"Let's go, Reggie."
"Rejected!" Flash yelled knocking the ball out of the other kid's hand's as he tried to score a basket. The ball bounced over and knocked a bucket of paint onto Melanie's banner that she had been painting.
"You did that on purpose, Flash!" She yelled out, upset.
"No, but I should have. You better watch your back." Flash said to her and caught the ball as it was thrown back to him.
I walked over to her from the other side of the room and Peter followed.
"Hey." I said softly. Peter and I began helping her pick up the bucket of paint. She sighed looking at her destroyed work.
Flash knocked the ball again, purposefully over in our direction. It was like that sense went off again in my head and without turning around I reached out and grabbed the basketball. Keeping it from hitting her banner again.
"Whoa, how did you..." Peter asked quietly and I shrugged. Melanie looked at me in shock.
"Give it up, Barrett." Flash called out. He had been less than pleased with me since I threatened to let him fail and get kicked off the basketball team. So he'd been picking on Peter and I more often then normal. I got a wicked idea in my head and smirked at Peter walking over to the center of the court.
"Why don't you take it from me." I said simply with a smile. Flash walked toward's me with a snicker. I'd never been athletically inclined before and everyone knew it. Flash stood in front of me as I held the ball out.
"That's right, Flash. Take it, man." Another kid called out.
"Go ahead take it." I shrugged and held out the ball to my side.
"What are you doing?" Flash asked giving me a dirty look.
"Afraid to take it because I'm a girl?" I asked and the room oo'd, embarrassing him.
He reached for the ball and I could sense it. I quickly tossed the ball behind me to my other hand. He looked at me with narrowed eyes and tried again. I was amazing myself just as much as every one else. I moved the ball again and held it out above my head. I hadn't nearly been able to try anything with my new abilities so this was pretty exciting. He reached froward for it, seeing as he's a bit taller. I moved the ball and tossed it, still attached to my hand around his head.
He ha'd enough as the crowd oo'd in amazement again and I chuckled. I tossed the ball at the back of him, making it bounce off back into my hand's. The student's laughed and murmured about what was happening. I could see Peter trying to hold in his laughter, biting his lip and I winked at him. So much new found confidence running through me. Flash turned around and looked at me less than pleased.
"Just take it." I told him as seriously as I could muster.
He looked at me again and rolled his eyes. The boy's on the team watched and encouraged him to take it. But Flash didn't move.
"All right, how about this." I stuck my hand out and covered my eyes with my free hand. I peaked out and he reluctantly moved forward. "All right how about this?" I turned my torso with my face still covered, backwards.
Flash walked forward and tried to grab the ball that sat in my hand. I felt him tug at it and it didn't move. I turned back around and looked at him as he grabbed the ball with two hands and pulled hard. The ball or myself didn't budge.
"Do something."
"Stop playing, Flash."
"She's a girl, man. Just take it from her!"
"Come on, take it." I beckoned him.
Flash backed away, not willing to put up with it any longer. The kid's around us questioned him on what he was doing and I began bouncing the ball. Flash backed away still looking at me and I smirked.
"All right, bring it! Come on, Barrett! Come on!" Flash yelled out angrily.
I dribbled the ball and ran towards him, easily dodging him and jumped from the ground into the air. My body flew toward's the net and I easily dunked the ball. For the first time in my life, I dunked a basketball in the hoop. Only there was one problem. I watched as the board shattered into hundreds of tiny piece's of glass. I landed on the floor and looked back up at the mess. And then back at the hoop that was in my hand's.
Peter congratulated me and kept asking how I did it. I couldn't even answer him, because I got sent to the principles office. I waited there for my Uncle Bob to come and we all sat down having a little meeting about it.
"Cate's behavior today was just unacceptable." The principle finished scolding the both of us.
We walked out and up the empty hallway as kid's were in their classes.
"They're not gonna make us pay for the backboard. You know that..." I said to my very angry Uncle.
"Oh, I don't care about the backboard. Was that true? What I heard in there just now? Did you, Cate, humiliate that boy?" He stopped us in the middle of the hallway.
"I mean, yeah I did, but..." I sighed.
"But what?"
"He deserved it, Uncle Bob. He's the kid that constantly pick's on me and Peter." I told him annoyed.
"So all of this is about getting even. If so I bet you feel pretty good about yourself. How did you even do that anyway's?"
"I don't really know. It all happened so fast." I shrugged.
"Well, thanks to this little escapade of your's I had to change shift's and I can't walk your Aunt, home from work tonight. You need to be there at 9 to pick her up. Understood?" He said. "Is that understood?" He asked again when I didn't respond.
"Yes, sir."
"Hello, Peter." Uncle Bob called out, seeing him peek his head around the corner.
"Oh. Hi, Bob. Uh, I was just..." He gestured behind him trying to make it seem like he wasn't watching from the other side of the wall.
"Don't worry about it, she's all your's now. Watch out for her, Peter. Don't forget Aunt Mary." He gave me a pointed look and then walked away.
"Hi." I said nervously.
"Hi." He chuckled. "Did you get expelled?"
"Expelled? Me? Pshh, no. It was my first offense, you know so I got community service." I giggled.
"Right, well that's good. Uhm, that was amazing by the way. Really stupid, but amazing."
"Thanks." I tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear.
"Hey, so I was wondering. I mean, I know we have that thing with Dr. Connor's later. And uh, we already kinda spend a lot of our time together. But you were truly amazing earlier. Oh, not that you aren't always..." Peter rubbed the back of his neck nervously and I laughed, putting my hand in his.
"It's okay, Peter breath."
He stopped and took a big deep breath.
"You were really great and brave today. Like I've been trying to be for a while. I was hoping maybe sometime if you wanna, uh,"
"Wanna what?" I asked softly moving closer to him.
"I don't know. Just, uh, we could. Or we could do something else. Or if you feel like going out... sometime... together..." He said awkwardly and quietly in his typical nervous Peter way.
"I'd love to do that." He looked up from the floor at me in surprise.
"Really?"
"Yeah, really."
"Okay. All right, good."
"Sound's good." I nodded and giggled. I leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I'll see you later?"
Peter's face flushed bright red and stumbled some more on his word's.
"Yeah." He nodded.
"Bye, Peter."
"Bye, Cate."
