Balancing Promises
It's been just over a year since, I became Spider-Woman. Is it hard to balance, regular life and the life of a hero? Oh, yeah. But I think I manage pretty well.
I slipped on my suit this morning and began my usual patrol, and swinging, through New York City.
"Woo! What do you have for me today, New York." I laughed to myself as I swung around.
"Reporting live from New York one chopper. An Oscorp truck carrying plutonium has been hijacked. A police chase is in progress." The new's reporter said.
"All right, let's get to work." I changed my direction and headed toward's the police chase.
The hijacked truck, smashed through the barrier of NYPD police cars. As the rest of the department sped after him.
"Say hello to Aleksei Sytsevich!" The criminal laughed maniacally, inside the cab of the stolen vehicle.
Men on the back of the truck were attempting to get inside to take the stolen plutonium. The NYPD surrounded the eighteen wheeler blocking him in. Aleksei crashed into one of the police car's and drove right over the side of the police car, crushing it beneath his wheels.
I swung my way up the street and took a sharp turn to engage the high speed pursuit.
"Spider-Woman!" A pedestrian down below me called out happily as I sung by.
"Hello, pedestrians!" I called out to them.
I lifted my feet and pushed myself forward on my final swing and landed on the edge of the big truck, near the driver's side door. I knocked on the window.
"Uh, knock, knock! Mr. Criminal. Hey, my name is Spider-Woman." He finally opened up the window. "You can call me, web head, you can call me amazing, just don't call me late for dinner, you get it?" I chuckled at my own joke. Aleksei tried to punch me one one hand and I easily ducked and avoided it. "Whoa!"
I ducked down and jumped onto the roof of the truck and sat down, my feet hanging near his face.
"I guess, you're not a shaker. Are you a hugger?" He pulled out a gun and let go of the steering wheel.
"I am killer!" He said in a thick Russian accent.
"Whoa! Okay!" I moved out of the way of the window as he shot out a couple of automatic rounds.
"Warning, plutonium 238 is a radioactive material and is highly explosive." The computer device, containing the plutonium said to the men trying to break into it.
A balding, dark skinned man, with big framed glasses, walked down the street of New York, carrying load's of blue print in his hand's. Getting bumped into like he was invisible.
"Excuse me." Max Dillon the Oscorp employee called out as he walked. "There's more room on the sidewalk, folks, please. I got blue print's here!"
"Watch it!" An unknown man collided with him and angrily shouted back at him.
All of Max's blueprint's fell from his hand's and they scattered across the sidewalk.
"A little help?" Max called out trying to grab them.
No one stopped to help and everyone that walked by kicked and pushed the blueprint's away. Some of the blue print's crossing into the road. Max crossed into the lane of traffic and began picking up his blueprints.
I leaned into the window of the truck as Aleksei struggled with the stuck gun.
"You having a problem with your gun? Let me help you out with that." As he struggled with the gun, I turned the steering wheel of the large truck, rounding a sharp corner. "Whoops, coming through!"
Max continued picking up his blueprint's from the ground mumbling thing's to himself.
"Oh this is bad. Uh, I'm gonna be right back." I told the criminal as I noticed the lane's of traffic ahead of us and Max in the center of the road. The truck crashed through the intersection as I swung out to grab Max. "Head's up, watch out!" I tackled him down to the ground as an oncoming flying taxi, zoomed by our heads. "Whew! Okay, there you go." I helped him to his feet and smiled under my mask. "You okay? You all right?"
"You're Spider-Woman." Max said in shock. His glasses sat crooked on his face and I reached out fixing them for him.
"Costume gives it away, huh?" I webbed up the rest of his blueprints. "Look, these look pretty important, Max." I handed them to him as I read his Oscorp name badge.
"Max. How do you know my name?" He asked breathlessly.
"It's on your badge." I held it up.
"I'm a nobody." He looked down to the ground sadly.
"Hey, you're not a nobody. You're a somebody." I lifted his face as i spoke to him. "All right, listen to me. Now, I need you. You're my eyes and ears out here."
"Okay."
"All right?"
"All right." His face brightened with a smile and I lightly tapped his cheek.
"Good. I'll see you out there!" I shot out a web and started back after the truck.
"Warning, violation of protocol." The computerized voice said as the men started loading the viles into a large briefcase.
I swung out my feet and flipped in the air, towards the moving vehicle. The truck slammed on it's break's, skidding up the road. Causing a massive pile up of police vehicles and knocking the bad guy's in the back of the truck down. When they recovered the stood to their feet and swung open the back door's. Shooting at the car pileup behind them. I swung above the truck and webbed up their weapon's and then their bodies, pulling them up into the air and away from the pile up.
"Get him, Spider-Woman!" A cop shouted out as the truck lurched forward, beginning to speed off again. I landed in the back of the back with the plutonium that began bouncing all over the place.
"Gotcha. Gotcha. Whoa, nope. Got you too." I repeated every-time I caught another vile. The truck turned sharply and they fell from my hand's as I got knocked around. "You are not going anywhere. Come here, come to mama." I tried to pick them all back up.
"Get the hell out of the way!" Aleksei screamed as he exited the alleyway he had taken. Shouting at the people on the sidewalk in the way of the large truck.
"Whew!" I sighed, holding them all in my hand's, while attached to the ceiling. A single remaining vile in the case, bounced out from the movement. "Oh, come on!"I groaned. I webbed up the other viles of plutonium, and chased after the bouncing container. "Come back here! Whoa! Heel!" I shouted as if it would s listen. It rolled out into the street, with the police department headed straight for it with their vehicles. "Gotcha!" I scooped it up in my hand's and I landed to the ground with it.
I stood up straight for a half of a second and a turned around.
"Ahhh!" I attached myself to the moving NYPD truck. I held on tightly, to the front end and my phone started going off in my pocket. Playing the Spider-Woman theme song. I tucked the plutonium under my neck and grabbed my phone. "Hey, hun. I'm running a bit late. I got stuck in some traffic." I said holding the phone to my ear.
"You're timing is alway's terrible." Peter chuckled at our high school graduation. "It's started already."
"I know, I'm so sorry." I apologized.
"So, where are you?"
"UH, first and broadway, second and broadway, third and broadway." I explained quickly as we passed each street.
"Are those siren's?" Peter asked slightly concerned.
"Uh, would you believe me if I said no?" I chuckled nervously.
"Cate." He sighed.
"I'm sorry, I'll be five minute's top's." I promised.
"Well, you better hurry, because they are calling Gwen to the stage."
"Okay, love you bye!" I shouted into the phone and hung up.
A police vehicle pulled up beside me and the riding passenger looked at me confused and I saluted him.
"Good morning, esteemed faculty and families of my fellow graduates. It's a honor to be standing up here today." Gwen began her valedictorian speech.
I swung off from the truck and followed after the eighteen wheeler still trying to get away. I jumped from my web and landed on the hood.
"Hello." I said.
"Hey, get off!"
"Listen, I'm really running late." I shouted at him tapping my wrist. A burst of liquid shot out from the truck. Spraying me with windshield washing fluid.
"Ha, ha. It's over, Spider!" Aleksei laughed. I twisted the sprayer valve, making it stop.
"Really?" I groaned.
"I know we all think that we are immortal. We're supposed to feel that way. We're graduating." Gwen continued. "But, like our brief four years in high school, what make's life valuable is that it doesn't last forever. What make's it precious is that it end's. And I know that now, more than ever and I say it today, of all day's, to remind us that time is luck. So don't waste it living someone else's life. Make your's count for something. Fight for what matter's to you, no matter what. Cause even if we fall short what better way is there to live?
I punched the glass windshield over and over trying to break through it. The criminal stepped on the break's as we collided with a large tour bus. I jumped from the hood of the truck, webbing up the plutonium in my hand, to a street light. My body crossing over the large tilting tour bus. I landed in front of it and pressed my back against it, and planted my feet into the ground, skating forward slightly. The bus came to a stop and landed back on it's wheel's. I looked into the window's checking for any major injuries, but every person inside was cheering gratefully.
Aleksei climbed from the stopped truck and jumped up grabbing the remaining vile of Plutonium from my web and running off. I swung around the corner and he turned around shooting out bullet's from his gun. I flipped in the air avoiding each one.
"I'll take that." I grabbed the gun as I landed safely on my feet. "That's not your's." I webbed the plutonium and flung it up into the air. Quickly webbing his hand's together and then I webbed his pant's pulling them down. Revealing him in his underwear. I whistled as I worked and caught them plutonium vile in my hand's.
"This is not end, spider!" Aleksei growled, struggling in the web's.
I walked away leaving him there, knowing the cop's would find him.
The crowd of parent's and families cheered for the graduate's as they were called onto the stage. Aunt Mary looked around, not seeing me anywhere in the line of student's.
"Michael Bates, Julia Orchard-Key's, Alexis Cromwell," The principle called out each student. "Bo Parisi,"
I landed in the distance, and quickly changed from my suit. I ran out, fully dressed in my blue cap and gown, but I still had my mask on my face.
"Catherine Barrett." He called out and I ran, ripping my mask from my face toward's the stage.
"Hey, I think I know her." An older gentlemen, in a white suit and sunglasses said. (Stan Lee, we love you. RIP <3 )
"Catherine Barrett..." He called again and I ran onto the stair's. I shook the principle's hand and grabbed my diploma from him. I could hear the loud cheer's from Aunt May, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Mary. I shook Gwen's hand and gave her an apologetic look and she lightly shook her head with a smile.
"Peter Parker." The principle called and he walked onto the stage, quickly shaking each of their hand's. He jumped from the stair's and caught my arm. Spinning me around and kissing me on the lip's, dipping me and I blushed and smiled as we stood back up.
"Nice of you to show up." He bit his lip and tried to look mad. I grabbed his cheek's and kissed him again and pouted.
"I'm sorry."
"You're lucky, you're cute. And that I love you." He chuckled throwing his arm over my shoulder as we walked away from the stage area. "So, what was it this time." He whispered as we were mostly alone.
"Crazy truck heist. Tried to steal Oscorp Plutonium. Started bouncing everywhere, it was insane." I giggled quietly. "Stopped the guy though. Also held a entire tour bus, with my back pressed against it, single-handedly. Making sure it didn't flip, with the truck crashing into it from behind." I bragged rather impressed with myself and he laughed. Peter placed a hand on my cheek.
"And yet, you're still so beautiful, and my badass girlfriend." he said slowly and kissed me once more as the rest of the name's were called.
The crowd was released and Peter and I waited together searching for our families. I saw Aunt Mary and grinned at Peter before running up toward's her. I jumped into the air like doing a jumping jack and smiled widely.
"Wait, do that again, do it again." She laughed holding up her camera. I grabbed her tiny waist and hugged her, carefully lifting her off the ground. "Oh, Cate, for Lord's sake's, I almost stole a cap and gown to run up there myself."
"Well, I would have loved to see that. It would have been really awesome." I laughed letting her go.
My gown unzipped and revealed the white graduation dress I had on underneath and Mary began snapping picture's.
"Oh, I am so proud of you. Sweetheart, I really am so proud of you." Aunt Mary grabbed my diploma and looked at it. "I know the first thing your Uncle Bob would say."
"Yeah, I know too." I laughed.
"Yeah?"
"You better hurry up the party's over."
"No." She smacked my arm.
"You got to get a job now." I finished and she laughed.
"Well, fine. The second thing he would say is "Don't just follow the path, make your own trail." She stated.
"That's Ralph Waldo Emerson." I gave her a look with a raised eyebrow.
"No." She shook her head.
"What do you mean, no?"
"Bob told me he made it up." We both burst out laughing. "Well, I guess you really did learn something here." I wrapped my arm around her and hugged her. "I wish your Uncle could have been here." She said softly and I sighed.
"Yeah, me too." I let out a deep breath and smiled. "And my folks."
"Yeah... Yeah." She said slowly.
"Hi." Peter said walking over to us.
"We are so proud of you." Aunt May said as she hugged me.
"We are so proud of how far both of you have come." Uncle Ben said giving me a hug next.
"Okay, get together you two." Aunt Mary said waving Peter and I together.
He wrapped his arm's around me and looked down at me lovingly, then kissed me, then we made silly face's into the camera as she snapped the picture's.
"Cate!" Gwen called out jogging over to us. She engulfed me in a hug as Peter unwrapped himself from me.
"Hi, Gwen." I laughed hugging her back.
"So, you missed my speech." She said quietly as we stepped away from my family.
"I know, I'm so sorry."
"It wouldn't have anything to do with the Russian mob would it?" She held up her phone and showed me the Daily Bugle Article already spreading on the web, about them being webbed up by me. I pushed her phone down and sighed. "You don't have to explain anything to me." She said softly. "No matter what you'll always be my best friend. I wanted to come over and say that we need to get together before I go off to Oxford."
"You got in? Gwen that's amazing congratulation's." I smiled at her.
"Yeah, I also came over here because I've been assigned to give my head of internship position to whoever I deemed most worthy and since you're to busy, the next and best fit is Peter Parker."
"What?" Peter asked shocked. He'd been working there since last year under Gwen.
"Oh, my god. Peter that's amazing!" I shook his arm excitedly.
"You've earned it. You've made your way to the top as the best intern there and you deserve it."
"Wow, Gwen. Thank you." He hugged her.
"Gwen, honey! Come on!" Her mother Helen called her back to them.
"Well, we will see you soon, okay? I'll call and you better pick up. Stop avoiding me." She whispered as she hugged me and gave me a pointed look. Walking away back to her family.
George Stacy's voice rang out in my head once again. When I looked behind her family, I could have sworn I'd seen him standing there looking at me disappointed. I looked back at Peter's smiling face as he laughed with his Aunt and Uncle and my Aunt.
"You're gonna make enemies. People will get hurt. So I want you to promise me something, okay? Leave Gwen and Peter out of it. Promise me..."
