Issue 13: Friendly Neighborhood
"Okay, testing, testing...how's it sounding?" Vee asked over the new communication piece.
Spider-Witch twirled around in the air before swinging onto a rooftop. "A little static-y, but I can hear you! You did an awesome job, sis!!!"
"Aww, thanks!" Vee giggled. "I'm trying not to be too loud because I really don't wanna wake Mom up..."
"And what do we say if she does?" Spider-Witch asked with a grin as she looked over the city, which was absolutely beautiful at night.
Vee chuckled. "I'm playing video games and you're asleep...although, you're sure she's not gonna check your bed and see that there's a giant Azura plushie in your place?"
"She'll probably be too tired!" Spider-Witch said. "But, speaking of, I better get back. We at least know this test works-"
But then, once again, the sound of sirens filled the air. But they weren't police sirens. They were fire truck sirens.
Spider-Witch's eyes widened a bit at that before she started swinging after them. "Looks like there's a fire!"
"Wait, what is webbing gonna do against fire?!" Vee cried. "You're also, oh I don't know, highly flammable!?!?"
Spider-Witch kept swinging. "I know that! I'm just gonna help in case someone's stuck inside! I don't just beat up bad guys!"
Eventually, after swinging as fast as she could, she landed on the rooftop across from a burning apartment building. Spider-Witch looked around and saw all the residents outside, with firefighters already working their magic.
"Seems all clear..." Spider-Witch muttered before she began climbing down, just to listen in.
Everything seemed normal for a bit before she quickly heard someone screaming and even pushing at some of the firefighters to try and get back inside, pointing at an open window.
"MY SON IS STILL UP THERE!!!"
Spider-Witch's eyes widened and she quickly took action. She webbed onto the building and then swung inside the open window, sliding across the floor.
Screaming and crying was heard soon after. Spider-Witch looked around, waving her hand across the smoke as she dodged burning debris. "Hello!? Anyone!?"
No response. Only more crying and screaming.
Spider-Witch just followed the sound before she gasped after hearing a cracking sound. She then suddenly wrapped herself in her cloak as a burning piece of wood practically bounced off her.
"Luz!? Luz, are you okay!?" Vee cried.
"I...I'm fine! I think my cloak's magic too!" Spider-Witch said before she ran into the room where the screaming was loudest...and much to her horror?
A young baby, likely no older than two or three years old, was there.
Spider-Witch didn't hesitate and scooped the young child into her arms, wrapping him in his cloak. "It's gonna be okay, honey! It's gonna be okay! I'll get you to your mommy!"
The child just clutched onto her instinctively, crying and sobbing, even coughing a bit.
Spider-Witch then began running back towards the window, and just as the room started to crash down, she hopped out and fired a web-line, slowly lowering herself down with the child in her arms.
The residents and even the firefighters watched her land, with the mother of the child finally shoving people out of her way as she ran to Spider-Witch and her son. "MY BABY!!!"
"He's alright! He's okay!" Spider-Witch said as she put him back into his mother's arms.
The child coughed a bit, but clutched onto his mother as his sobs very slowly began to calm down.
The mother was now the one crying, clutching her son close as she looked at Spider-Witch. "...thank you...thank you!"
"Don't mention it...but please, keep an eye on the little guy-"
Then, there was suddenly a loud shriek from above. Spider-Witch looked up and gasped.
"Someone's still up there!!!" A firefighter cried.
"I've got them!" Spider-Witch cried before the firefighter could even send any of their men to save them. "Just put out this thing!!!"
She then pulled herself into the air with her webs and dashed through a window, her cloak and suit protecting her from the glass. The shrieking grew louder, telling her she was in the right place.
"Hello!? I'm here to help!!! Where are you!?" Spider-Witch cried as she began running towards the sound, quickly using her cloak to block a bunch of burning debris.
Then, she spotted a figure. Spider-Witch quickly began running towards them...only to suddenly be punched across the face.
A familiar cackle sounded throughout the burning room. "Play the damsel in distress and you come running..."
Spider-Witch groaned as she sat up before she quickly stood up. "Golden Goblin...again!?"
"Just wanted to check on my favorite person!" Golden Goblin cackled.
Spider-Witch raised her fists. "Oh, you suck! You know that?!"
"Luz!?" Vee's voice cried, but thankfully, only Spider-Witch could hear. However, Vee's voice was only beginning to glitch out more and more.
Spider-Witch's eyes narrowed. "Is it infuriating in here or is it just you?" She asked, clenching her fists.
"So harsh..." Golden Goblin laughed. "But, let's get straight to business...what are your thoughts on my little offer? Are you in or are you out?"
Spider-Witch pretended to think, even tapping her chin. "Lemme think...it's you who's out, Goldie! Out of your mind!"
Golden Goblin was silent for a moment...before laughing as he pulled out something from behind his back.
A detonator.
"Wrong answer." Golden Goblin smirked as he pressed the button.
Spider-Witch gasped and heard the loudest BOOM she could imagine...but it was from a distance. Spider-Witch looked out the window and then saw what had just blown up.
A bridge with cars still on it, therefore people were still on it.
"NO!!!" Spider-Witch shrieked as she hopped right out of the burning building and began swinging towards the bridge, trying to go as fast as she could.
Vee clearly tried to speak, but now the communication device in her ear was far too glitchy for her to even make out a single word.
Spider-Witch just blocked it out as she swung, gripping onto every web she shot and swinging herself into the air as hard as she could just so she could get further. Just so she could get there faster.
"NO, NO, NO, NO!!!" Spider-Witch shrieked as she swung herself high into the air...and then suddenly, the strange rings returned around her wrists. The same ones that allowed her to even transform, but now, only three of them were there.
Then, before Spider-Witch could even blink, she was suddenly engulfed in a bright flash of light...and then she was on the bridge, which was clearly unstable.
Spider-Witch's eyes were wide in confusion, but she didn't even bother to question it once she heard screaming.
She started swinging around, looking around for people. She then saw two people getting out of their car to try and get to safety. So, she dashed down and webbed them both, pulling them into the air much to their shock.
Spider-Witch then fired a large spider-web to the end of the bridge, one of the few parts that wasn't collapsing. She then tossed the two right onto the web.
She then quickly started swinging around more, webbing citizens and even a few cars and then the people to safety. And she was going as fast as she could, because with every person saved, debris would begin to fall and she would even have to dodge a few rolling cars.
After a while, she swung herself high and spotted one final thing. A bus slowly tipping over the edge.
"NOT TODAY!!!" Spider-Witch cried as she dashed down in front of the bus and then webbed the front of it to the edge, just so she would have a bit more time.
Then, she fired two web-lines and began pulling at it, straightening the bus enough for the people to get out and run to safety.
"EVERYONE GET OUT!!!" Spider-Witch shrieked as a small piece of debris suddenly hit her on the back, causing her to start struggling. "I CAN'T...HOLD IT MUCH...LONGER!!!"
The bus driver quickly opened the doors and started yelling at the top of his lungs. "EVERYBODY OFF!!!"
One by one, the passengers started running out the door, with Spider-Witch continuing to pull on the bus with all her might. They all kept running until there was only one left: the bus driver himself.
But then, the bus began slipping. Spider-Witch gasped and then acted quickly, dashing through the glass of the bus and grabbing the driver, wrapping her arms around him. They then both shattered through the back window just as the bus began to fall.
Spider-Witch then fired a web and swung back up with the bus driver in her arms. She then landed, letting go of the driver. "GO!!! I'LL MAKE SURE YOU GET ACROSS!!!"
"T-thank you!!!" The bus driver cried as he began running, quickly catching up with the other people.
But then, the people she saved suddenly all stopped as a large chunk of the bridge fell right off, leaving them trapped.
Spider-Witch swung over seconds later, her eyes widened. "This is only getting worse!!! HANG ON!!!"
She then dashed through the opening that the large chunk left behind and began webbing the two pieces of bridge together, just to stop them from rocking back and forth. She then swung back up and did it again to make it more stable.
If she wasn't trying to save lives, it would be like bungee jumping over and over again.
Eventually, the bridge was stable thanks to the large golden webs holding it together. Spider-Witch then spotted something and quickly webbed it, pulling at it.
A flatbed truck. She was using it as a bridge for the people to cross.
But then, one of the webs holding together the bridge suddenly snapped, causing the pieces to start rocking again. But, she still had some time.
Spider-Witch then got between the two pieces, webbing each side and pulling with all her might as the flatbed extended to the other side.
"GO...GO!!!" Spider-Witch shrieked.
The people quickly began running across the flatbed, with each of them jumping to the other side one by one. But then, suddenly, the flatbed began to slip as soon as the last person started to cross.
Spider-Witch quickly dashed towards them, falling and then scooping them into her arms. She panted heavily before firing a web and pulling herself into the air with the person in her arms.
"HANG ON!!! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT LET GO!!!" Spider-Witch instructed before cars suddenly began to fall down, as if the crumbling bridge was just trying to make her job harder.
She growled and began bouncing off the cars, running across them and then leaping to the next until she was finally on the safe side.
Spider-Witch let go of the person and looked at them. "Are you okay!?"
"I...I-I am!" The person cried as they began running to their group.
Spider-Witch then pulled herself into the air again with another web, making sure they got across. Eventually, she repeated the earlier process and started to web and throw them onto her safety-web.
And with that, the bridge finally began to collapse...but everyone was safe, to her knowledge.
Spider-Witch's arms and legs ached as adrenaline kept pumping through her veins. She then started swinging to a landing spot. "V-Vee...are you-"
But then, mid-air, she was grabbed by the neck and taken even higher into the air.
"TIME TO END THIS, WITCH!!!" Golden Goblin laughed as he flew off with the hero in his grasp.
