38: A Sanctuary for Rebels

"Where are we going?" I asked, panting in between every word.

"You'll see," came Maddi's reply. She let go of my arm, and I finally took stock of everyone who had come. Everyone meaning Liam and Adam. Abbot and Sam had made their presence known to me far and wide. Liam was obviously going to be there, having been involved even before school started, and I guessed it made sense that Adam had come too. Twins stuck together, to the best of my knowledge.

Not that I'd known many twins before.

We headed down a few paths and alleys, turning off the larger road into a network of side roads that I'd never even seen before. Adam, who was leading us (Maddi bringing up the rear right behind me) was familiar with it, though. At least I assumed so. He was navigating as easily as I might fling an elastic band into someone's face.

That is to say, without even thinking about it.

We turned onto another street, hitting a dead end. "This is a dead end," I pointed out. Liam glared at me as if to say shut up, it'll make sense.

Hopefully that's what it meant, because that's what I took it as and that was the intructions I followed.

Adam pressed his hand to the wall and kept it there for a few seconds. With a quick check behind him, he tapped the wall, and a door-shaped space slid out to reveal a wooden door where a piece of wall had been before.

Nice tech. It was funny how the rebel headquarters was harder to break into than the prison that kept a whole bunch of rebels-plus-villains in it. No wonder they were able to break out so easily. I'd need to look up the statistics (though there probably wouldn't be any available to the general public) later, but I got the feeling that not too many of them even needed Maddi's help.

We walked in in a single file line, through the door and down a couple sets of stairs. Of course, all secret bases have to be underground. I was surprised you didn't need an elevate- Whoa. I looked up. The roof was high and painted with blue and green and red swirlies, a couple feet taller than the average ceiling, but there was a narrow hallway that seemed to stretch forever. There were doors sticking out every once in a while, signs to the left of the neon yellow handles that seemed to be uniform. Maybe so that you could actually see. The place was so dark I had to squint to see Sam, and she was standing a foot away from my face.

The light lit up the room from behind me, and when I turned around, Maddi was glowing.

That was some power she had. Now I had to squint because she was so bright. It was like staring at a small version of the sun. Except less hot, because I wasn't burning up or anything.

That might be bad.

"This way," Adam said, starting to walk down the long hallway again. He turned left after about three or seven door, and with a sweeping bow, opened it. "After you, milady." Liam snorted, walking through ahead of Abbot.

We filed into the room. There was a long table, chairs crammed around it, and a chart on the wall. A few people were sitting there already, chatting about something or another, but for the most part the chairs were empty. I caught a glimpse of a name card with Liam's name on it and searched around for one with a Lindy. I found Belinda's and sat down, slightly reluctantly. Anyone who called me by my full name (Probably the Leader Mr. Hart had mentioned. If he- or she- was in charge, they'd be the ones to tell everyone else my name.) was bad news. It meant they were actually serious. And serious can be downright scary.

Everyone else took their seat

"Don't say a word of what happens in this room," Maddi warned. "The Leader will not like that, and neither will I." Adam rolled his eyes and snickered.

"Seriously-" Maddi glared at him and he shut up.

"That good with all of you?" We nodded. "Then you'll find out what was so funny to my darling brother. You see," she said, standing up. "The Leader and I are one and the same."
