23: Always Good to Get on the Inside

"I can seriously not think of any games that only use three suits," said Dakota, shaking his head as I showed him the heartless deck.

"Cheat? I remember reading about it. It would work."

We agreed, and a few minutes later after Contri explained the rules to us, we were playing.

I won all three rounds. I must be getting better at lying. After that, we stopped playing, Dakota saying I was cheating (Ha. Ha. Ha.) and Contri not arguing. "Hey, is there breakfast?" I asked. Contri nodded.

"It's until ten, though, and it's 10:02 now. If you were hungry, you could go beg for scraps."

"Good idea," I said, and walked through the door and down the stairs to the lobby. There were no chairs or anything. The kitchen, however, still did have foodstuffs. Looks like not many people a) knew breakfast was a thing on weekends or b) were hungry. Good thing Contri was Know-it-All. I snatched a croissant out of one of the worker's hand just before they dumped it in the trash. Everything else, it seemed, had been either eaten or thrown out, so it looked like that was my breakfast for the day.

I stepped through the door and started to head upstairs again. Someone grabbed my wrist so that I couldn't. We weren't in viewing distance of people in the kitchen, which was probably why they grabbed me here.

I turned around. Maddi.

"What do you want?" I said.

She smiled, but it went deeper than on the surface. This was a really creepy smile at second or third or fourth glance. "I want you to join us, of course. Same place, same time. Don't tell anyone or I'll tell that you were out of bed. And trust me, no one in happy when a student's out of bed."

Maddi let go and I punched her in the stomach, barely keeping a straight face. Mr. Hart had taught us the basics of punching a couple days ago, and I'd hit her hard. She staggered back. "Maybe," I said as sweetly as a full package of gummy worms. I walked off, but I had barely reached the stairs when I turned around. She was still where she had been before. "Yes."

When spying, it is always good to get on the inside. (From Lindy's Guide to Surviving Spying.)

Contri was gone, back in her room when I got back, and Dakota had left too. Probably getting changed, I thought, which was something I should do too.

I grabbed a (non-uniform!) outfit and went into the bathroom. After a nice, long shower, I changed into my favourite capri-jeans and a loose, burgundy top. May as well dress nice when I can.

Terra was back when I got out. Amazing how she picked the exact time I was in the shower to arrive in our room.

"Nothing happened yesterday between us. Got it?" I nodded, not wanting to share a room with someone who hated me. Although I could imagine the pranks. I curled up on my bed, grabbing my phone (Which was dying. I needed to find my charger.) and starting to read my new book.

It wasn't quite as good as my last, though it was a lot shorter. I was done before lunch.

It was 11:54, so I couldn't exactly do much before we ate. I popped over to the boys dorm, where Dakota should be. He was, and so was Liam and Jacques.

Oh, why oh why did one of my best friends share a room with a guy who I knew was conspiracing with someone who was going to probably betray the school? And a guy who hated me for spying on him?

"Hey Lindy," Dakota said, scorching over on his window seat bed so I could sit down. I stayed standing up. If I sat down, I'd have to look at his roommates. I went to stuff my hands in my pockets, before realizing that they were, in fact, fake. Ugh.

"Want to go down to lunch together?" I scuffed my shoes on the floor. Dakota smiled, nodding. His eyes drifted past me and his face went red. I whirled around, glaring at Liam and Jacques, who were barely suppressing smiles. Boys.

"C'mon, let's go," Dakota said, grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the room.
