Chapter 11

Once Oliver agreed to join the team, Elena guided them up a wooden staircase that lead back to the office.

"Two down and two to go. Who's next?" Isabella asked.

"I have a feeling that one of you will recognize this person."

Elena took out the next folder and gave it to Oliver. Isabella hovered over his shoulder with anticipation as he opened it. A school bell could be heard in the moving scene depicted on the folder and students crowded the hallways. The image didn't focus on the students for long, however, it zoomed in on a certain person with an orange backpack. She packed in multiple textbooks and was talking to someone beside her before a blonde-haired boy interrupted the conversation. Her head moved just enough to acknowledge him that Isabella could identify her right away.

"Our next target is Miranda Jones?"

"Wait, you know her?" Oliver said.

"She's one of my best friends. I met Miranda in ninth grade and we've been close ever since. This year was the time that we were finally going to graduate."

"Yes, and it's the moment to realize that both of you are gifted. Each person was chosen because they can achieve a certain purpose. You all have the same destiny, but different paths to achieve the common goal. We'll find and recruit her after school," Elena declared.

The school day passed slowly as Isabella counted down the hours to three o'clock. They waited patiently in the outside forum until spotting Miranda. She mingled with the kids that were

crossing the street and exited the group when turning left. They followed her quietly, being careful to stay a safe distance behind her. Miranda entered a café and they chose a secluded side booth in the far corner.

"Okay, here's what I was thinking: Isabella can get close enough to stun her and, once she's incapacitated, we can bring her back to my office. By the time she comes to, I'll explain everything to her and relay the proposition." Elena suggested, taking out her phone.

"Too much?" Elena laughed.

"At least she realizes when she sounds ridiculous," Isabella thought.

"We'll wait here. You walk over there and deal with your  friend."

"How do I activate my powers? Something could go wrong and could seriously hurt Miranda."

Elena had heard enough and interrupted, "I can't explain how to manipulate powers of this complexity because its different for everyone. Some come naturally while others require more work harnessing it than releasing the energy. All you can hope is that it works according to plan and to not put too much pressure on yourself if it doesn't."

"Fine," Isabella replied reluctantly.

She went to Miranda's table and the girl instantly looked up from her phone.

"Hey Isabella! Where have you been? I feel like I haven't seen you in ages."

She motioned for her to sit down.

"Yeah, about that. I've been caught up in a couple of things."

"Oh, anything worse than your wild experience on Sunday?"

"No."

She continued to talk, but Isabella tuned her out. If only she knew the truth about that night then maybe Miranda would be more worried for her own safety. Isabella peered at the exit and saw Elena's hand form a thumbs up.

"Let's put this plan into action," Isabella thought as she got out her phone.

Pretending to receive an urgent text was the most plausible solution to get herself out of this awkward conversation.

"Miranda, I have to leave."

"You just got here. Is something wrong?" she pressed.

"It's nothing. I'll see you at school tomorrow."

Isabella hadn't expected that Miranda would press for so much detail about Sunday. She was there after all and witnessed everything important.

"Maybe she figured out that I had powers before Elena told me? What signs would an inexperienced All-Seeing Eye show?" Isabella questioned.

Nevertheless, these questions didn't deter her. She passed by Miranda and pressed a hand against her shoulder. Electricity pumped through her, enveloping Miranda's heart. Her head hit the table with a loud thump. Elena ran to join Isabella, clapping her on the back reassuringly.

"You did it! Let's get out before we draw too much attention."

They arrived back at her office, laying Miranda softly onto the ground.

"When do you think she'll wake up?" Isabella wondered.

Suddenly, Miranda's eyelids began to stir.

"Right now," Elena answered abruptly.

She tried to sit up and take in her new surroundings. The world spun like a spiral, melting everything together into a blur.

"Where am I?"

"Welcome to the Archfiend office," Isabella responded.

"You must be very disoriented, but all will be clear shortly," Elena added.

"I'm part of the All-Seeing Eyes?" She guessed.

"How does she already know about us? None of that was mentioned before," Elena considered.

"I've read a lot of books on the Archfiend Manor myths and how their heroes are chosen. Once I discovered my ability to rewind time among other things, I figured that it wouldn't be long until you would find me," Miranda replied.

There was something odd about her response. Her lips didn't move, but the answer reached Elena within seconds. Miranda's smiled knowingly as she made the connection: telepathy.
