Chapter V
Aquaria cried as she rode Delta over the sea. She had been on the spirit's back for over a day and she had no idea where she was going.
After a few more hours she saw land. There were cliffs that had an opening into a beautiful fjord. There was a castle on the water and the kingdom looked gorgeous. She didn't know what kingdom it was, but she needed food and a place to stay.
Before they got to the shore, Delta dove below water, startling the young princess.
When Aqua came up, Delta was gone and she was at the shore. She walked onto the land and hugged herself. A guard saw her and made her stop.
"Where did you come from?" The guard asked and she panicked, not wanting to be sent back home so she ran as fast as her little legs would let her.
The guard easily caught her and she started to cry.
"Let me go!" She blasted water at the guard and he was in shock as she ran from him. He shook his head and ran after her.
"Get that girl!" He ordered as he passed his fellow guards.
In minutes Aqua was captured and she struggled.
"She has abilities. She may be after the king and queen," the guard said and Aqua shook her head.
"Excuse me, but who is after us?" A familiar voice was heard. Aqua turned her head to see Queen Iduna.
"Let her go," Iduna ordered.
"But, your majesty, she could be dangerous," the guard protested.
"She is a princess and a friend. Now, release her," Iduna said sternly and the guard complied.
"Aquaria, what are you doing out of Corona? Where are your parents?" Iduna approached the scared girl.
"I-I ran away... m-my father said I couldn't leave the palace a-and he said my birthday will only be nobles and the people who work in the palace... I'll never get to see Varian ever again..." Aquaria cried, realizing now that she had run away she would for sure never see him again.
"Varian? Who's that?" Iduna asked gently as she hugged the sobbing princess.
"H-he's my best friend... m-my only friend... I never get to play with anyone except my mommy when she's not busy... Varian is the only one I can play with and now I'll never get to play with him again..."
A guard came up to them and said, "your majesty, we just received news from King Frederic of Corona. Princess Aquaria is missing and they believe she is at sea."
"Send word back to Corona that we have Princess Aquaria," Iduna said and Aquaria panicked.
"But I can't go back! I don't wanna be stuck in the palace forever!" Aquaria trembled in fear. "I want my mommy here..."
Iduna nodded to the guard to go and send word back to Corona. Aqua pulled out her scarf and wrapped it around herself for comfort.
"Where did you get that scarf?" Iduna asked in shock.
"M-my mother gave it to me when she gave me to the water spirit... my birth mother..."
Iduna froze for a moment before turning to the guards.
"Go back to the castle and tell King Agnarr that I'm going to see our old friend, Pabbie. Tell no one of this event and forget everything she said. If I hear word of this spread around you will all be relieved of your duties as guards. Now go," Iduna said to the guards that were present.
They nodded and left to deliver the queen's message to the king.
"Aquaria, come with me," Iduna said as she held out her hand. Aqua took her hand and they went to the stables quickly. They got on horseback and rode through the forest.
"Where are we going? Who's Pabbie?" Aqua asked as she held onto the horse's mane.
"Grand Pabbie is someone who can give you answers you may seek and right now he can help me understand how the Nokk is still here," Iduna said as they rode into a clearing.
"Grand Pabbie! Please! We need your help!" Iduna called out.
Aqua looked around and saw a bunch of rocks. "Um... they're rocks... Grand Pabbie is a rock?"
Then the rocks popped up and Aqua nearly yelped in surprise. An older looking troll came up to them.
"Your majesty, what brings you back here?" The troll asked.
"Who's the cutie?!" Another troll asked excitedly as she looked at Aqua.
"This is Aquaria, princess of Corona. We knew she was adopted but she has a Northuldra scarf and claims that the Nokk brought her to Corona. How is that possible? The spirits vanished when the forest fell. No one can get in or out of the forest," Iduna said and Aquaria frowned.
"Hmm, come here, child," Pabbie said to Aqua and she carefully walked towards him.
He put a hand on her forehead and hummed.
"Were you born with your ability?" He asked and she nodded.
"I think so. I've always had it I think," she answered.
"Ability?" Iduna looked at Aqua.
"I-I can control water? My parents have hidden it from the kingdom. We don't want the wrong people to find out."
"So she's like Elsa. But how? The spirits don't just hand out gifts. Why would they give her this gift?" Iduna asked and Papa hummed.
"I am not quite sure. However, are you sure it was the Nokk? The spirits have been absent for decades," Pabbie said, wondering if the young girl was merely imagining things of a child's fantasy.
"The Nokk is how I got here. She's always there when I need her," Aquaria said softly and Pabbie rubbed his chin.
"I'll see what I can but the past is sometimes shrouded," Pabbie said and what almost seemed like mist appeared in the air.
The scene was a forest over looking the sea.
"She'll never get to see the sky. She'll be trapped for her entire life... it's not fair to her..." A voice sounded around them and it was very echoey but Iduna recognized the voice.
A horse appeared in the mist and a girl was placing a baby on the horse's back with a note, a scarf, and a music box.
"Take her somewhere safe, please," a man's voice echoed and the horse ran off into the water.
Then the horse shifted into a humanoid figure and ran over what looked like a castle roof. Soon armored figures surrounded the spirit who put down the baby before melting to the ground leaving only a cloak.
Then she heard the familiar voices of her parents.
"It's a baby..." Arianna's voice echoed.
"We shall take it to the orphanage in the morning," her father's voice was heard.
"Why can we not take her in?"
The mist faded and Aqua looked at Pabbie.
"That is all I can see," he said and Iduna stepped back slightly.
"So the spirits are still out there... maybe they can help us understand Elsa's magic," Iduna said hopefully.
"Perhaps but only Ahtohallan knows for certain," Pabbie said and Iduna hummed.
"Ahto-who-wha?" Aquaria looked at them both in confusion.
"Ahtohallan is a special place said to hold all of the answers. It is a river of memories," Pabbie explained and Aquaria thought of the lullaby.
"Where the northwind meets the sea," she murmured and Iduna smiled.
"There's a river full of memories," Iduna sang softly.
"You know the lullaby?" Aqua looked at her with a smile.
"I sang it to my children at night and my mother sang it to me and my brother when I was your age," Iduna said and Aqua smiled a little. "How did you hear the song?"
"My music box... my mother sang the words that were with my music box... but if you have the same scarf and you know the lullaby then you must be Northuldra too... right?"
"You know of the Northuldra?" Iduna asked.
"Yes, my birth mother left a note that said she was trapped in the forest. My parents researched a bit to figure out where my birth parents may be and they read about the Northuldra. We assume that I'm Northuldra from that fact but I'm not completely positive I am," Aqua explained.
Iduna laughed a little with a smile. "Well, you are definitely smart like your mother. Yes, I am Northuldra, but that is a secret that stays between you and I, okay? Arendelle mustn't know that either of us are Northuldran and they cannot know of the Nokk."
"Delta," Aqua said to her.
"What?"
"Her name is Delta," Aquaria said with a smile.
"Well then, you must keep Delta a secret. It could be very dangerous if Arendelle found out that one of the spirits, if not all of them are still around," Iduna said to the princess.
"Which is strange. I still have not sensed the awakening of the spirits," Pabbie said and Iduna hummed softly.
"Only Ahtohallan knows..." she murmured. "I must go to Ahtohallan. Then we can get the answers about the spirits. More importantly, we will find a way to understand and help Elsa control her magic."
"If that is the path you wish to take, your majesty. But the path to Ahtohallan is through the dark sea," Grand Pabbie warned and Iduna looked at him.
"You know where to find Ahtohallan?"
Pabbie pulled a scroll out of thin air and gave it to Iduna. "Here is the map to where you seek. But I caution against the trip. No one has ever survived in the dark sea."
"I have," Aquaria said to Pabbie. "Well, at least the misty vision said I did, right? Or was it a different sea?"
"The Nokk guards the dark sea so it is safe to say that you would've been taken through the dark sea," Pabbie responded.
"Then there is a chance that we can make the journey," Iduna said with a smile. She hated seeing her eldest daughter so afraid all the time. The gates had been closed for so long and if Ahtohallan could help Elsa control her powers, they could reopen the gates.
"Good luck on your quest, your majesty," Pabbie said as he bowed respectfully and Iduna curtsied back.
"Thank you so much, Grand Pabbie," she said before she took Aqua back to their horse and they went back to Arendelle.
