Chapter XII

Rose was walking into a room that had taken her so long to locate. She saw the book and her eyes widened as she grabbed it.

She stood still and waited for something to happen, like a trap, but nothing happened.

"Lu! I-I found it! I've got the Codex Semper!" Rosamund called out as she clutched it close.

She only got a scream in response so she immediately took off running.

"Lucia! Where are you?!" Rose shouted, trying to find her friend.

Desperatation filled her as she raced through the caves. She took a quick turn and sprinted down a corridor towards where she heard the noise. She ran in and saw that Lucia was on the floor, clutching a book.

She was panting heavily and Rose quickly helped her up.

"What happened?" Rose asked immediately as she held Lucia's arms carefully.

"Arrows. They just all came out of the wall," Lucia breathed out as she calmed herself down.

"I got the Codex Semper," Rose replied which made Lucia raise an eyebrow.

Lucia glanced at the book in her arms. "Then what book did I get?"

"I'm not sure. Maybe there is two books to throw off anyone looking for the book," Rose concluded as she looked at the book Lucia was holding.

"Well then we will take them both. Come on. I don't want to spend anymore time here than I need to," Lucia said, putting the book in her satchel.

"Yeah. I wanna get home. I miss Quirin and Varian so much." Rose started towards the exit and Lucia followed by her side.

The two women left the cave and didn't look back, wanting to get home to their respective families. Research could come later. They were both home sick and worn out from their travels.

Elsa sat by the fire with Honeymaren as a baby reindeer rested his little head on her lap.

"I wanna show you something. May I?" Honeymaren started, motioning to the scarf that Elsa had lying on her lap.

Elsa gave a silent nod, letting Honeymaren lift a corner of the scarf.

"You know air, fire, water, and earth," Honeymaren started as she motioned to the snowflake embroidered on the scarf.

"Yes," Elsa spoke softly as she nodded.

"But look," Honeymaren continued as she pointed to the center of the snowflake. "There is a fifth spirit. There is even a myth that there is a being that is a bridge between us and the magic of nature. Someone capable of controlling all of the elements."

"So there's a fifth spirit? What does it control?" Elsa asked curiously.

"No one knows, but some say they heard it call out the day the forest fell," Honeymaren explained and Elsa sat up straight.

"My father heard it," Elsa remembered before turning her gaze back to Honeymaren. "Do you think that's who's calling Aquaria and I?"

"Maybe. Alas, only Ahtohallan knows," Honeymaren replied as she held up a hand.

"Ahtohallan," Elsa repeated gently. "Dive down deep into her sound," she began to sing.

"But not too far or you'll be drowned," Honeymaren joined in, both of them singing in unison.

"Why do lullabies always have to have some terrible warning in them?" Honeymaren questioned with a light laugh.

Elsa laughed as well, feeling a warmth spread through her as she smiled at Honeymaren. "I wonder that all the time."

She felt a connection and then jumped slightly when the feeling of a hand went over hers. She saw Honeymaren's hand on hers which made her smile more.

Just then, the ground began to shake.

The both pulled back and the baby reindeer perked up.

"Earth giants," Honeymaren breathed out as she looked around.

Yelena turned around to look. "What are they doing down here?"

Everyone moved quickly, throwing pals of water onto the fires, closing the doors to the huts. They did everything to hide any and all sources of light in their camp.

"Hide," Honeymaren warned and Elsa nodded, pushing her back up against a tree.

Anna hid behind a rock as the ground shook more violently which each of the giants' steps closer.

Elsa felt curiosity fill her veins so she turned around, peeking out from behind the tree where she was hiding. She gasped quietly when she saw a giant made of boulders sauntering past in the distance.

The giant sensed a presence and stopped, turning its gaze towards the source.

Elsa sucked in her breath as she quickly hid from view once again. She then began to breath rapidly, realizing that it could sense her.

The giant merely turned and continued on with its course.

Elsa turned and walked away from the tree she had been hiding behind. She then felt someone grab her hand and she stiffened, relaxing only when she realized it was just Anna.

"Please tell me you were not about to follow them." Anna looked at her sister sternly.

"What if I can settle them like I did the wind and fire?" Elsa questioned as she looked back to where the giant had been over top of the treeline.

"Or what if they can crush you before you even get the chance?" Anna argued in a whisper. "Remember, the goal is to find the voice, find the truth, and get us home."

Olaf came over with the lizard on his head. "Hey guys, that was close."

"I know," Elsa murmured as she let the lizard jump into her hand. "The giants sensed me. They may come back here. I don't want to put anyone at risk again. And you're right, Anna. We've got to find the voice. We're going now."

"Okay. We're going. Let me just-" Anna turned to look for Kristoff and Sven.

Aqua and Varian were running over with Ruddiger still sitting on Varian's shoulders.

"Wait, where are Kristoff and Sven?" Anna asked as she looked between the two Coronans.

"We don't know," Varian answered as he shook his head.

"Oh yeah, I think they took off with that Ryder guy and a bunch of reindeer," Olaf spoke up and Anna's eyes widened.

"They left?" Anna questioned in disbelief to which Olaf nodded. "Just left without saying anything?"

"Who knows the ways of men," Olaf replied as he walked towards the direction Elsa went.

"Don't worry, Anna. Kristoff and Sven will be safe with Ryder. They'll be back at camp with the others by time we get back. We'll meet up with them after," Aqua assured Anna with a smile.

"Yeah. I guess you're right," Anna replied with a soft sigh.

"Come on," Aqua said, looking back to see her birth parents looking at them from the camp.

Aquaria waved to the couple with a smile before she walked with Anna and Varian to catch up with Elsa.

💧

Aqua walked hand in hand with Varian as Elsa sang out to the voice.

They all jumped when Olaf started to try and imitate Elsa, but he was very off key.

"Hey, Olaf, um, maybe just one of you should do it," Anna spoke up.

"I agree. She's a little pitchy," Olaf replied and Aqua laughed lightly before Gale blew past them, swirling around each of them. "Hey! Gale's back!"

The wind spirit flew up to the mast of a shipwreck, drawing their attention to it.

"What?" Anna was confused when she saw the Arendellian flag.

Aqua gasped as she realized what they had found. They ran up to see the Arendellian ship that Iduna and Agnarr had been on when they died at sea.

"How can it be?" Anna asked softly as she held onto her sister's arm.

"What is it?" Olaf asked in confusion.

"Mother and father's ship," Elsa replied in pure shock.

Olaf looked back to the ship. "But this isn't the Southern Sea."

"No, it isn't," Aqua confirmed and she glanced at Varian.

The sisters ran to the ship.

"Wait, they don't know? Aqua, I thought that they knew," Varian said quietly as he looked at his girlfriend.

"They kept their destination a secret. The only reason I knew was because I was there when Pabbie told Aunt Iduna about the map to Ahtohallan," Aqua replied as she looked down.

"They deserve to know, Aqua. Coming from someone who didn't know what really happened to my mother, they should know the truth." Varian put a hand on her shoulder.

"How am I supposed to tell them?" Aqua quivered as she thought back to when Iduna had taken her to meet Grand Pabbie.

"Just be honest with them," Varian said softly as he hugged her.

They went down into the shipwreck to find Anna, Elsa, and Olaf searching for something.

"Here!" Anna said as she pulled out a scroll from the waterproof compartment off the ship. "What language is this?"

Aqua went over and looked over Anna's shoulder.

"I don't know, but look, this is mother's handwriting," Elsa pointed out as she saw the writing in the corner.

"The end of the ice age. The river found but lost. Magic's source. Elsa's source?" Anna read before handed Elsa the scroll and grabbing the other scroll with a light gasp. "It's a map. They travelled north and planned to cross the Dark Sea to..."

"Ahtohallan..." Elsa breathed out.

"It's real?" Anna questioned in shock.

"Always has been," Aqua replied and the sisters looked at her in shock.

"Ahto-who-what?" Olaf questioned.

"Ahtohallan. It's a magical river said to hold all the answers about the past," Aqua explained to the snowman.

"Reinforcing my water has memory theory," Olaf said with a hum.

"Water has memory," Elsa murmured as she looked at her hands before standing up. She went to the center of the ship and knelt down with her hands on the ground.

She concentrated on bringing forth the water that was held in the wood.

"Elsa?" Anna looked at her sister in confusion.

"I wanna know what happened to them," Elsa replied as she pulled the water from the wood and formed an ice sculpture of her parents holding each other in a giant wave.

"Ahtohallan has to be the source of her magic," Iduna's voice rang out.

"We keep going for Elsa," Agnarr spoke.

"The waves are too high!" Iduna cried out.

"Iduna!" They heard Agnarr yell.

"Agnarr!" That was the last thing they heard.

Elsa started to cry and she ran out of the shipwreck.

"Elsa!" Anna quickly went after her.

Aqua quickly followed and Varian stuck close behind her.

"He, hey, what are you doing?" Anna asked Elsa who was leaning her weight on a rock as she cried.

"This is my fault. They were looking for answers about me," Elsa spoke as she trembled.

"No, Elsa... it's... it's my fault..." Aqua admitted and Varian squeezed her hand lightly.

"How is it your fault?" Elsa shook her head.

"I'm the reason they found that map. I was born in the enchanted forest, but I was able to make through the Dark Sea when I was only a newborn because of the Nokk. The first time I came to Arendelle, Aunt Iduna took me to the trolls and that's where they got the map. That was also the day your mother started planning to go to Ahtohallan," Aqua explained as she looked down, tears trickling down her cheeks.

Anna hugged Aquaria tightly. "It's not your fault. It's nobody's fault. Neither of you are responsible for the choices our parents made."

"No, but I'm responsible for their deaths," Elsa replied and Anna stopped her quickly.

"Stop. No. Yelena asked, why would the spirits reward Arendelle with a magical queen? Because our mother saved our father. She saved her enemy. Her good deed was rewarded with you. You are a gift. And I'm positive that whatever Aquaria's parents did, she was the reward for them as well," Anna tried to explained. "If anyone can resolve the past. If anyone can free Arendelle and save this forest, it's the both of you."

"We believe in you both," Varian spoke up with an encouraging smiled.

"He's right. More than anyone or anything," Anna agreed with the royal alchemist.

Elsa nodded and looked at Aquaria. "Honeymaren said there was a fifth spirit and there was another who was supposed to bridge humans with the magic of nature."

"A fifth spirit?" Anna questioned.

"That's who's been calling us from Ahtohallan. The answers about the past are all there," Elsa replied as she looked to her sister.

"So we go to Ahtohallan," Anna said with determination.

"Not we. Me," Elsa corrected and Aqua frowned.

"I'm going too, Elsa," Aqua argued quickly.

"The Dark Sea is too dangerous," Elsa shot her down.

"No. No, we do this together. Remember the song? Go too far and you'll be drowned," Anna reminded desperately. "Who will stop you from going to far?"

"You said you believed in me, that this is what I was born to do," Elsa spoke, her voice dripping with pure determination now.

"And I don't wanna stop you from that. I...I don't wanna stop you from being whatever you need to be. I just don't want you dying trying to be everything for everyone else, too!" Anna argued. "Don't do this alone. Let us help you, please. I can't lose you, Elsa."

Elsa wrapped Anna in a hug and the pulled Aqua in as well. "I can't lose you either, Anna. Or you, Aqua. Come on." She motioned for Olaf and Varian to join the hug.

They all hugged before Elsa stepped back and froze the ground.

"Wait, what?" Anna was confused as she looked down. "What are you doing?"

All of them, save for Elsa, were in an ice boat that Elsa had slide down an ice path down the hill.

"Elsa!" Aqua cried out as the queen faded from their view.
