chapter twelve
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
All the alarms was doing off in the house. I slowly rose up from the bed and pulled the covers off. I didn't get an ounce of sleep. I was too worried about school. When I did fall a sleep, I had a nightmare - which caused me to cried for a good portion of the night.
I opened my dresser drawer and tried to decide what shirt I wanted to where. I pulled out a navy blue long sleeved shirt and pulled out my black high wasted jeans from the closet. I put on my grey jacket, some black socks and my Jordan's. I brushed my hair into a low puff, did some baby hairs, put on my little hoop earrings, and went into the bath room.
In there was all three of my brothers fighting over the toothpaste.
"Give that back! I had it first! There was no need to snatch it out of my hand!" Ace yells grabbing the paste from Jace.
"Well, you was taking too long! Some of us what's to have time for breakfast!" Jace shouts back taking it from Ace again. Trey took it from him.
"HEY!"
"Both of y'all are acting stupid! It's just toothpaste!" Trey screams. He sets the toothpaste on the sink.
I shake my head and walk in. They was too busy arguing to notice me. I grab my toothbrush and toothpaste, put the paste on my toothbrush, and brush my teeth. After I finish, I put my toothbrush away and walk out the bathroom to the kitchen.
"Good morning." I say to mom. She was toasting a bagel.
"Good morning, would you like one?" I nod. She spread strawberry cream cheese on them and give them to me. She then pops another in the toaster for herself.
"Thank you." I say smiling.
"No problem honey. Hurry and eat though. It's almost time to go, I'm gonna be talking you to school today." I nod as I munch on my bagel. Mom finishes packing everyone's lunch and then we head to my school.
The whole car ride I was nervous. This well be the first time I have to acknowledge strangers. I was sweating and shake more as we got closer to the school. My temperature was rising, it was harder to breath. I focus on my breathing. In and out. In and out. I calmed down a little until we pulled up into the school's parking lot.
"Ok, let's go." Mom says and we get out the car. There was a lot of people here. Way more than I thought. They kept glancing in my direction, which didn't help settle my nerves. We walk into the office.
"How may I help you?" The receptionist ask my mother.
"Yes, today is Jaz's first day of school." Mom says.
"Wonderful, let me get her schedule." She does some typing on the computer. "Here is your locker combo, if you decide to use it, and you are to report to the library. In there is Mrs. Smith. Just tell the Liberian you're looking for her and he'll direct you." I nod.
"Where is the library?" I ask in my quiet voice. She smiles.
"Go up the steps. Turn left then turn right." I nod again.
"Thank you. Now Jaz have a nice day and if there's any problems have them call me." I nod. We both leave the office. She heads to the front entrance and I head up the stairs.
I was very crowded in the halls. I try my best to push through people without actually pushing them. As I bump into people I say sorry, but they don't here me. They don't pay me no mind. They are also so loud. Too loud. They talk at each other obnoxiously loud, laugh obnoxiously loud, they walk obnoxiously loud. They just can't quiet down. I already hate it here already, and it's haven't been five minutes. I walk into what I assume is a library from my little memory of it. There are books so I guess this is it. I walk up to the man at the desk.
"May I help you?" He ask raising a eyebrow.
"I'm looking for Mrs. Smith."
"What, I can't hear you, speak up. My old ears aren't as good as they use to be."
"Mrs. Smith." I say a little louder.
"Mrs. who?"
"Mrs. Smith." I say even louder, would be as loud as a normal persons voice would be when they speak to someone.
"Oh, Mrs. Smith. Through that door right there." I nod and knock on the door he pointed to.
"Come in." I open the door. "You must be Jaz. Come take a seat. We have a lot of work to do." She smiles widely at me and I take a seat on the other side of the table from her. "Ok, I'm going to give you some test to see what level you are on. It's on the computer. You will be given questions. It will start off easy then the difficulty will increase. We will do a math and reading one. As for science and history, we will start from the beginning, ok?" I nod my head.
She puts a computer in front of me. It was reading.
"You're going to read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Try your best." I start the test and she works on something on her computer.
After two hours I finally finish the test. I turn the computer towards her to get her attention. She looks at my results.
"You've exceeded our expectations. Very will done. You're at a seventh grade level. You was suspected to be at a fifth grade level. It is time for lunch. Would you like to eat in the cafeteria or in here?"
"Here." I say. This is my the first time speaking to her. I grab my lunch bag and start taking my food out. I have an apple, a turkey sandwich, I bottle of water, four Oreos, and strawberry yogurt with granola to put in it.
"Good, I can talk to you about your schedule. Every morning you come in here with me. Then you have lunch. After you'll have art then gym. I will show you where art is then gym. Just wait for me. You can eat lunch in here with me when the time comes or in the cafeteria, I don't mind. If anyone is giving you trouble where it be a student or teacher you tell me or tell them to call me. When the day is over you are to wait at the student parking lot for your brothers unless told other wise. Tomorrow you will take the math test when the next day we'll start class. Hopefully by the end of this semester you will be able to be put in regular classes, which is why we we'll be seeing each other on Saturdays too. Remember I'm also your consular. You can talk to me about anything. My ears are always open for you." She eats her lunch in between talking keeping a smile on her face.
"Now, I what to get to know you. We can make it a game. I'm going to ask you a question then you'll ask me one ok." I nod as I finish up my sandwich and start eating my apple. "What is your favorite color and why?" I think for a moment.
"G-green. It reminds me of nature, which makes me happy." I say above a mumble.
"Now you ask me a question."
"Umm, what... what is your favorite animal?"
"Zebras. They stand out to us, but in the wilderness, they seem invisible to the animals hunting them. I love there pattern on there fur also. How about you?"
"I always liked elephants. I love their height, their big ears and big nose. I think they're amazing. What is your favorite snack?"
"Umm, let's see. I love chocolate chip cookies. What is your favorite sport?"
"I did love to play soccer. I was really good at it when I was younger before... I, I still like it."
"That's great, I was never good at sports. I really wanted to play volleyball, but I was really, really bad at it."
"How bad?" I ask actually wanting to know.
"When I tried out for it when I was in middle school, it was a disaster. Every time I hit the ball it went in the wrong direction. I actually hit it too hard and I broke one of the ceiling lights." I chuckle and she does too. A bell rings. "Well lunch is over, let's go to art." I nod and throw my trash away.
She walks me to art, which was on the other side of the building. After a lot of pushing and shoving, we made it to the class.
"When the bell rings wait for me." I nod. She tells the teacher, who's name is Mrs. McDaniel, that I'm a new student and McDaniel tells me where to sit as Mrs. Smith leaves.
Other students come in. Some fill the other seats at the table I'm at.
"Ok, we are starting perspective drawings. Perspective drawings are drawings that are draw at your eyes perspective. Think, when a cube is at you line of sight it will look like this." She draws a cube on her white board. "If it's above your light of sight, which is called birds-eye view, then it will look like this... If it's below your line of sight, which is called your worms-eye view, then it will look like this.
Your line of sight is the horizon line. Notice how I drew two vanishing points. We are working on two point perspectives. Also take notice that I drew converging lines to help draw it correctly. I want you all to practice this on the paper I'm handing out. You will draw a total of nine cubes. Three above the horizon line, three below, and three on the line ok. I'll be walking around to help. Raise your hand when you're finished."
I work on my cubes. First I draw a horizontal line through my paper with the ruler. I draw a point on one side of the paper then another point on the other side of the paper on the line. I start with the cubes on the line. I make my vertical line, then my converging lines to each point. I make more vertical lines, making sure they're parallel like she was just telling us. I then erase the part on the converging line I don't need. Then, started the process over again.
(A/N This is what she's doing for those who don't know)
I finish and raise my hand like told. She come over.
"Well done, you can relax until the rest of the class is done."
Once everyone finishes, she continues to talk about two point perspectives and then we draw houses.
The bell rings and I wait for Mrs. Smith like I was told. She comes walking in. I meet her at the door and we leave to gym.
"How was art."
"Fine."
"What did you do there?"
"We are learning about two-point perspectives."
"That's cool, are you enjoying art so far?"
"Yes, it's kind of relaxing."
"Oh, how so?" I shrug.
"I don't know. It's hard to explain. It's like... I, I can focus on it and my mind doesn't wonder off... sorry if I'm talking to much." I keep my eyes directed to the floor.
"No, no. I want you to be able to freely talk to me. Don't be scared to speak your mind, ok?" I look at her and smile.
"Ok."
We walk into the gym and she tells him, Coach Bret, I was a new student. He tell me to make sure to bring gym clothes next class and to go sit on the bleachers. He said he'll assign me a gym locker for tomorrow. I sit down and wait for whatever I am waiting for. Finally other students walk in wearing there, what I assume, gym clothes. I see Trey walk in. He spots me.
"Hey Jaz." He says sitting beside me.
"Hey." I say smiling. I'm finally not alone. Tommy and another guy sits beside him.
"William, this is my twin sister Jaz. Jaz, William."
"Sup." William says. I wave.
"Nice seeing you again." Tommy says.
"You too."
"Silence!... Today we are going outside to have a free day, but you have to say active. That means either playing football or soccer or walking around the track, got it."
"Yes coach." Everyone says.
"Someone grab the bag full of equipment and let's go." We walk outside to the football/track field.
"Jaz, you want to play soccer with us?" Trey ask.
"Sure."
It was me and Trey against Tommy and William. All three of them was on the soccer team. Me and Trey start with the ball. It was like riding a bike, I didn't forget how to play. After I warmed up to it, I came to realize I was still good at it. I played as good as them even. We played the whole time we was out here. When it was time to go, we won by one point.
"Dang, your still good at soccer." Trey says as I'm huffing and puffing.
"Yeah, but I'm not as fit as I use to be." I say trying to control my breath.
"Yeah, yeah, that's a easy fix." Tommy says as we all walk back to class.
"You may be as good as us. You should join the girls soccer team." William says.
"Maybe next year." I said. Tommy and William was starting to grown on me, which was a good thing. I was starting to feel comfortable around them.
"When do you have lunch?" Trey ask.
"I have the last lunch."
"D lunch, that's great, we have that too." William says.
"You can eat with us tomorrow. Kelly and Fate is there too." I nod.
"Ok."
We walk into the gym and everyone else goes to change back into there regular clothes. I meet with my teacher for a quick second. She checks in with me and tells me she'll see me tomorrow at the library. I tell her she doesn't have to walk me to the car rider loop since my brother is in this class. She waits with me until he shows up. When Trey comes back, she wishes me a goodbye and me and Trey go to the car and wait for the other twins.
