Chapter 6

Calm Before the Storm

I slowly knelt down and picked up a piece of the dirt, rubbing it against my fingertips. There were clear footsteps running through the dirt and they brought a familiar sense to someone with expertise such as mine.

"Vampires" I spoke to myself, allowing a smirk to form on my face. I took two photos out of my right pocket and studied them carefully one more time. "Targets Miette and Serena. Your time will come. I can almost taste it"

I blinked a few times to allow myself to be brought back to reality. Did I really just hear what I thought I heard? I hadn't realised I was staring awkwardly and the two vampires. They both stared back and waited for a proper response.

"Erm..." I scratched the back of my head and laughed nervously.

"I'll take this awkward silence as a compliment," Miette winked, turning her head to Serena. "I mean, no one has really been stunned like this before"

What was she talking about? Some kind of power? It was at that moment that I realised I couldn't move my legs. I was frozen to the spot. No matter how hard I tried to move legs I couldn't. I wriggled and wormed around on the spot, looking like a complete fool.

"That wasn't a funny joke Miette," Serena sighed and then clicked her fingers. "That should do it"

Suddenly, my legs felt lighter and I took a step back. It was a strange feeling, but I was just glad I could move. After stretching my legs I turned back to the girls.

"What was that?" I asked Miette, who couldn't help but smile.

"Just a little trick some vampires have. We all have powers that vary beyond each bloodline. Serena can negate these powers and I can do all sorts of things to any human, through things like kissing, hugging or even talking about something relationship-related, such as going on a date."

Well it was good to know I knew a vampire that could freeze me on the spot if I stepped out of line. Plus the blood sucking part. What was the deal with that anyway?

"We're not sucking your blood because of unforeseen circumstances. That and you are our friend now, Ash. Even if we crave your blood, we can fight the urges," Serena answered my question without me even saying it. "Don't worry, I can't read minds. It was written all over your face"

"Well anyway, if you are serious about this 'date' favour then how are we going to do this? You can't be outside in the sunlight, right?" I continued asking questions and neither of them seemed the least bit phased about my inquisitiveness.

They both answered without words, popping up umbrellas in the middle of my room. The room became encased in shadows created by the umbrellas and they both smiled.

"We will be fine, although umbrellas in the sun may seem like a weird thing." Serena sort of frowned but Miette shrugged.

"I don't know. Maybe we can use them until we get into some shade? Like, under a tree or something," Miette suggested as they both thought hard of some ideas.

"I know a good place we can have lunch on Saturday, it has a few tables with parasols, the sun shouldn't hit you there," I spoke up, still wondering if they were being serious. I didn't really understand why both of them had decided to take me out on a date together. Some sort of competition perhaps?

"It's decided then!" Miette clapped her hands and Serena smiled, but she seemed a little different. "We better get going now!"

"Guess I will see you both on Saturday?" I heard muffled shouting from my Mom downstairs. Perfect timing.

"Adieu, Ash" Miette winked once more and she basically disappeared.

"See you tomorrow" Serena spoke awkwardly and then she followed Miette.

I opened my door after they had left, keeping my thoughts about what had just transpired in the back of my mind. I had decided to keep the other things to myself, like the man who was looking for vampires. Was he a friend of Serena's and Miette's? Or an enemy? I wanted to find out for myself first.

"Ash?!" Mom's voice was raised, like she had been shouting for a few minutes. "Someone is at the door for you"

Huh? Door for me? This was a first. I dashed down the stairs and opened the door. It was the person that had asked me about Miette and Serena! I suddenly began to panic as he stared at me blankly. His expression changed to a smile and I tried to regain my composure while he spoke.

"It seems we meet again. So you do know about the vampires, don't you?" he folded his arms and raised one eyebrow. He meant some serious business, I could tell.

"What vampires? What are you talking about?" I lied, gulping once. I wasn't sure if he had noticed how nervous I was because he continued to smile, shrugging slightly.

"I guess if you are saying that then you must be telling the truth. I'll leave for now," he said those words, but I could read the encoded meaning behind them. He was going to keep a close eye on me.

"Goodbye," I replied with a straight face, instantly slamming the door shut. With a deep sigh, I ran back upstairs, realising a problem. "I have to cancel the date!"

I ran around in my room, realising I had no way of contacting Miette and Serena. It was kind of a good thing that I wouldn't be seeing them until Saturday. It meant I had a few days to plan. I still didn't know what the guy wanted with them both, but there was something in my head that told me it wasn't going to be a nice thing.

I walked down the street away from the boys house. He definitely knew something about them and it was just a matter of time before he would slip up. I slipped my hand into my left pocket and brought out a pair of leather gloves, putting them on. L

"Time for action" I said to myself with a smirk.

I felt like I was going to enjoy this vampire hunt!

"Mission log, quick update, time unknown. I have found a possible kid that is a host for the two vampires. He is giving off a strong vampire-like aura, they are probably using his body unbeknownst to him for their powers, without taking his blood. I will proceed with caution and continue to survey the area. Maybe he will slip up and reveal where they are. Maybe they will just show themselves.

I spent the last few hours perched up on a hillside. I was trained in this kind of thing, having no sleep. I put my bag down and opened it up, taking out a crossbow and some arrows made out of silver. This silver was coated in a special concoction that could eliminate vampires. Of course, with each vampire having unique abilities, I had other traps and certain tools at my disposal. All I could do now was wait and keep a close eye on the boys house. It wasn't too far from the hill I was sat on. With a pair of binoculars, the front door was visible. Of course, no vampire would just knock on the front door. They can use super speed to pretty much traverse up walls and through windows, as silent as a mouse. Like ninjas. Pretty scary to any normal human, but not someone like me.

I was feeling excited and ready to take out some more vampires. It was a job I enjoyed way too much. Perhaps a little too much. I pulled out a cloth and began cleaning my crossbow. It had to be sparkling clean ready for the hunt!

Even though I shared the same idea as Miette, it slowly sank in that I was going on a date with a human. Ash was the nicest person I had met. The other vampires never spoke to me like he did. He made me feel special and wanted. He made me feel warm. Miette was the same. She was pretty much the only vampire that could tolerate me.

However, I felt like a competition was beginning between us. I was starting to like Ash more each day and now that Miette was in the mix like this, I wasn't sure how things were going to pan out.

I also felt a little uneasy at the same time, the mixture of the two didn't sit right. Like a storm was brewing, waiting to bring darkness to the land. There was definitely something about to happen.

We would have to prepare for the worst. Miette and I were in trouble, for sure.

"I wonder if Ash knows we are in trouble?" I looked up at the darkness above, surrounding myself in my own thoughts.

I had a gut feeling that he knew.

But could Ash help someone like me?

He is just human. No powers or special capabilities. By being around Miette and I, he would be risking his life.

I would never ask him to risk his life No matter what. Because I cared. I wanted to care even more. I wanted our friendship to grow.

I just wanted things to start changing, from now until the end of time.
