Chapter 2
Another one?
By. TheNameIsMark
I panicked and looked around, searching for places that Serena could hide in. I whipped my head to her and she was smiling, clearly giving me a look that made me realise how stupid I was acting. I sighed and looked at her as if I was searching for a solution. Mom couldn't find out that a girl was in my room, at this time, for no reason. Plus the fact that she is a vampire. Is this even real life?
"Ash?" Mom repeated and I nearly jumped out of my skin.
"Don't worry, just answer back" Serena whispered into my ear. I shivered at the sound of her voice and gulped nervously.
"Sorry, I'll keep it down" was all I could think of. I gave myself a mental facepalm and waited for a reply. It felt like forever before a reply came back from the closed door that was keeping her from entering my room.
"Well, you should think about stopping whatever you are doing and getting back to sleep" Mom finally replied and I wiped my forehead in relief. Now that was over, I had to figure out what to do next with the vampire in the corner of my room.
"Well, it looks like there has been a mistake" Serena frowned, but I could tell she was frowning at herself. She looked back at me and smiled. Her smile was soft and made me warm. It was easy to see how much she was like me. She seemed weak. Like someone that needs protection from the simplest of things. Someone who needs care at every moment in their life. I realised my thoughts were creating an awkward silence and laughed nervously.
"Erm...I guess" I kept my voice down. I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice.
"I better go now, before the sun even considers coming up" Serena turned to look out of my window and sighed. "I guess this is goodbye for now"
"I suppose it is" I replied rather awkwardly with a frown of my own. "Who knows whether the sun will come out or not...summer has just ended after all"
"You could be right. We will have to wait and see" Serena turned back to face me and winked before she disappeared from sight like a bolt of lightning. The curtains lifted up from the wind and then settled back down.
Questions began to fill my head.
"Vampires...real? This is too confusing. Why me of all people?" I said to myself, rubbing my chin in thought. "Even though I am confused, I do wish the sun will not come out tomorrow. Maybe I will see her before school..."
With my thoughts never-ending, I realised it was best to just sleep and figure everything out as I go along. Falling asleep was easy. I was out like a light, the night passing by like it wasn't even part of our daily timeframe. Before I knew it, the birds were chirping in the nearby trees and the sky was bright. It was the morning all right.
I drew back the curtains and straight away I noticed two things. The wind was blowing a little heavier than usual and there was no sun. I had the urge to smile, but it was too early to even consider the fact that I was walking to school. I grumbled and groaned all the way to the kitchen to enjoy breakfast. It was quiet in the kitchen, no Mom in sight. I poured some cereal into a bowl and then milk. My random thoughts of people pouring milk in first made me frown, just as my Mom walked in.
"What are you frowning at?" she asked me. Great timing Mom.
"Nothing" I replied with the usual reply when she got nosy. I heard her sigh.
"Of course it's nothing. You say that every time. Somedays I think you get into serious trouble and pretend like it's nothing" she sighed more noticeably this time and walked to the fridge to prepare her own breakfast.
I didn't reply. Instead, I got on with my priorities. I devoured my breakfast in a couple of minutes and dropped the bowl and spoon into the sink. Before Mom could complain about the dishes I dashed upstairs to get ready for school.
Once I was ready and my bag was on my back, I headed out into the outside world. As soon as I closed the door I felt the cold breeze hit me like an ice cube rolling down my back. It was freezing. I drew up my scarf from my neck and pulled it up to my mouth. Then, I threw my hands into my coat pockets and walked towards my school.
My school wasn't anything special. High school was a pain, considering I had no friends. The old buildings and classrooms made the mood even duller during each day. The main thought of each school day slivered into my mind like a snake coiling around a victim.
Who was going to make me a victim of bullying today?
"Well if it isn't Ash Ketchum" a voice answered my question for me. I looked up briefly but ducked my head down to avoid the group and I continued walking on before he could try anything.
School was rough. No one could understand how I felt. Going to teachers was something I would never do. The thought had never crossed my mind. Not many things crossed my mind each day. Usually, the only things I would think about in the unsociable hour I had that everyone else called 'lunch' were what games I could play after getting home. I never considered anything else.
However, today was a little different. The day went by feeling like any normal day. I had a few snide remarks about my gaming interests and piles of homework on top of more homework. Great. But, I just couldn't think about games. All I could think about was Serena. It wasn't like I was directly thinking about her. It was more about vampires. I needed to know more. All I could feel was the urge to get home and wait for night to come. She never said anything about coming back tonight. I could only hope that she would.
"I think you need to learn a lesson, Ketchum" the same person from the morning was waiting outside of the school for me to walk out. School was over now, why couldn't he just go home?
"Why don't you just leave me alone Gary?" I turned away from him and put my hands in my pockets, walking away. It wasn't until I felt a hand grab onto my wrist that I realised he was being deadly serious for once. Gary spun me around and then pushed me straight onto the floor. I landed on the cold hard pavement, looking up at the moron.
"The next time I say something to you. Don't ignore me, okay? I know you're all wound up in your stupid game fantasies, but you could learn some manners" Gary scowled at me and then he began to walk in the opposite direction.
I suddenly realised after a few moments on the floor that my mouth was slightly open, a grin on my face. The irony in his statement was amusing. He wasn't the least bit respectful or well-mannered. I knew he was making it seem a little bit less violent, but Gary was the rudest of the rude. The one that I tried to avoid at all costs. The crap he gave me made my life constant hell. Escaping from my thoughts, I got up from the pavement and headed home like nothing had happened.
"How was school? Did anything happen?" Mom asked as usual once I had walked through the door. I had barely let go of the handle after closing the door when she asked. She was a constant nag after school, something I hated.
"It was fine and-"
"And nothing, that's what I am guessing you are going to say, right?" Mom folded her arms with that look that all Mom's gave when they knew something was up.
"Yup, " I spoke casually, heading up the stairs with my bag.
"Dinner will be ready later. I'll shout you down when it is" Mom shouted up to me before I could shut my door and block out her voice.
"Sure!" I called back during the slamming of my door. Now that I was in my safe haven and the gaming chair was beckoning me, I sat down to play a few games.
Time passed. What started out as a few games turned into a dozen and suddenly, I heard my Mom shouting to tell me it was time for dinner. I followed my usual pattern of devouring all the food in sight and then I headed back upstairs. During meal times, she always liked to have conversations about school and my life. I wasn't all for it. I held a minimal conversation with her on a daily basis, which gave her reasons to constantly nag. I didn't want to get her involved in my problems, though. The nagging was something I just had to put up with.
ALL the time.
Ever so slowly, the night began to creep up on us, like an enemy lurking in the shadows. Before I could even get ready to sleep, my room was complete darkness. I felt a sudden chill run up my spine and spun around in my chair, hoping to see Serena stood in the same position.
However, it wasn't Serena. But, there was another girl stood directly opposite me, at the other end of my room. She seemed similar to Serena in that she was clearly a vampire. However, her appearance was completely different. She had short blue hair. Red eyes. She was just like Serena. Pretty and a warm smile that made me feel comfortable with people.
"Am I dreaming?" I murmured to myself. I put my controller down and got up from the chair I regularly glued myself to. "I am guessing you're a friend of Serena's?"
"You have met Serena have you?" she let out a single mocking laugh and shook her head. "Serena isn't very popular with the rest of us"
"Ah, so there is plenty more of you?" I asked and she immediately covered her mouth. "Ooh, a secret"
"Don't tell anyone. I'm always like that, slipping up and giving away secrets" she sighed and then frowned. "I was supposed to be drinking your blood and you are distracting me. This happened with Serena too, I am guessing so anyway?"
"I actually have a question about vampires" I ignored her question and continued on anyway before she could even prompt me to ask the question. "Can you come out during the day, if the sun isn't out?"
"Well, I suppose that information isn't an actual secret. The simple answer is no. We only come out after dusk and leave before dawn" she answered my question. Simple enough.
"Where do you leave to?" I pressed for more answers, but she shook her head once again.
"You said A question, not two. No more questions" she refused to answer, folding her arms and staring straight at me. Her expression was kind of cold, although she had the same warm feeling as Serena. It was really strange.
"What about your name?" I asked her, wondering if that counted as a question she couldn't answer. When she shrugged like she was considering to answer in her head, I prepared to mentally catalogue her response.
"I'm Miette. I am a vampire, just like Serena. I suppose it is nice to meet you" she answered like it was an answer she had practised for a long time. She finally smiled again, the cold expression immediately dissipating from sight.
I never considered vampirism to be a possibility in the real world. They didn't exactly resemble vampires, but the way they acted and the other powers I had caught glimpses of, such as Serena's speed, made it all seem true. Mette went after introducing herself. She didn't explain why she didn't just drink my blood anyway, it made me confused. Just like the previous night and the whole of the day, the thoughts regarding the vampires stuck in my mind like they were locked up in there. I couldn't stop wondering about the possibility of a third, or maybe even a whole country of vampires.
After seeing two, anything could be possible.
I knew that much was true.
With the thoughts flooding my entire mind, I slowly fell into a deep asleep, my thoughts filling my dreams with all sorts of possibilities. Endless pieces of imagination combining into dreams that could never seem possible in the real world.
But what I thought was impossible was becoming possible. The world as I knew it was changing. I knew my life was going to change with the introduction of two vampires. Two vampires that seemed way out of my league to be even telling me their names.
Was it changing for better or for worse?
I would just have to find the answer out myself.
