The Affair {6}
Today was the day I would end everything with Blake. I had been acting normal around him in school, and when we hung out at Luka’s house.
“Connor, are you okay? You seem kind of…tense,” Luka said.
I offered him a reassuring smile. “I’m fine Luka,” I assured him. I was a little tense, but it didn’t matter. It would all be over soon.
We were sitting in Felix’s living room watching The Boondock Saints. Felix was sitting with me and Luka on the couch, and Blake was sitting in a chair next to the couch.
“Guys, I’m thirsty!” Felix announced.
“So go get yourself a drink,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Nope. You and Blake are going to go downstairs and get us soda and chips,” Felix said with a pleasant smile.
“And why are Connor and I doing that?” Blake asked in confusion. “It’s your house Felix!”
“Exactly! I invite you guys into my house, so I figure the least you peasants can do is serve me,” he said, folding his hands behind his head and leaning back against the couch, kicking his feet up on the coffee table.
“Lazy,” I grumbled, standing up.
Blake copied me and we went down to Felix’s basement together. I reached for the chips, but Blake caught my hand.
“Are we hanging out tonight Connor?” he asked.
I nodded at him, pulling my hand out of his grip. “Yea. We’re hanging out tonight Blake,” I said, grabbing the chips and nodding at him to grab the soda.
He followed me upstairs and we ate and drank, laughing along with the movie. I held Luka close to me the whole time, not even bothering a glance towards Blake.
When the movie ended, we all stood up and stretched. I shared a kiss with Luka and took his hand in mine.
“I think we better head back to his house now,” I said, nodding at Luka.
“Okay. What time are you coming over to work on the project, Connor?” Blake asked me.
I shrugged, trying to think of a time. “I guess I’ll just come after dinner. So, probably around six,” I said.
“Alright, sounds good,” Blake said with a knowing smile.
But he didn’t know anything.
Luka and I left and got in my car. I drove us back to Luka’s house, and we went around back and climbed onto the trampoline. We laid down, cuddling together.
“Connor, what’s on your mind? I can tell that something us,” Luka said, brushing my hair out of my eyes and staring into them.
I leaned up and pecked Luka’s lips, smiling at him. “Nothing, Luka. Hey, do you want to go on a date tomorrow?” I asked.
Luka looked pleasantly surprised as he nodded at me. “Sure! I would love to go on a date Connor!” he said in excitement, blushing lightly.
“I love you so much Luka,” I said, hugging him to me.
“I love you too Connor,” he said, resting his head on my chest.
We laid together for a while before his parents called us in for dinner. We went inside and sat down together.
“Are you spending the night Connor?” Tammy asked with a bright smile.
Luka nodded eagerly, kissing my cheek. “Of course he’s spending the night again, mom!” he said happily. He pouted and crossed his arms. “But first he’s leaving me to go work on a project with Blake for a little.”
“It’ll be fast. We finished most of it the other day. All that’s left is the conclusion,” I said, tilting his head and kissing him.
“Well, you boys should eat up before it gets cold,” Luka’s dad, Paul, said, smiling and offering us the food.
We ate and I got up, kissing Luka before heading out and getting in my car. I took off towards Blake’s house, taking a deep breath to keep myself calm. I had to make sure that Blake knew this was over for good.
“I should’ve killed you when I had the chance to get off easy,” Breathe Carolina sang as I pulled into Blake’s driveway.
I shut my car off and took another deep breath before getting out. I went up to the door and rang the doorbell, waiting until Blake opened it.
He led me inside and up to his bedroom. He shut the door and locked it before turning to me and smiling.
“Hey Connor,” he said flirtatiously, moving to kiss me.
I shoved him back and he stumbled a little. He caught his balance and shot me a confused look.
“What the hell Connor? Are you sure you’re feeling alright?” he asked in concern.
“It’s over Blake,” I said flatly.
“What’s over? Connor, what are you talking about?” he asked, looking even more confused.
“We’re over, Blake. This affair is over. I’m done cheating on Luka. I never loved you Blake. I’ve only ever been in love with Luka,” I said, my voice hard and cold.
“Connor…no. What? No!” he whispered, his eyes going wide. “Shut up! You don’t know what you’re saying! Are you fucking drunk?”
“I’m sober Blake. And I’m done here. We’re never doing this again. Honestly, I never want to see your face again. But since I know I have to, I’m just going to tell you to never talk to me again. The only reason I’ll pretend to even be your friend anymore, is so that I don’t upset Luka. There was never anything between us but lust, Blake. And you’re a moron if you didn’t figure that out.”
“Shut up!” Blake screamed. “Shut up Connor! You’re lying! You’re in love with me, just like I’m in love with you!”
“You’re wrong. I never have been, and never will be, in love with you. I’m only in love with Luka. You were just a way to keep things interesting.” That was partially a lie. I had loved Blake. But I hadn’t been in love with him. I had loved him in a completely different way than I had loved Luka.
“Connor,” Blake said, his eyes watering. “Connor, baby, please. Don’t do this. Don’t end us like this. Please. I’ll do anything. If I did something to make you mad, I’m sorry. Please don’t do this to us. To me. I love you. I wasn’t lying when I said that. I. Am. In. Love. With. You. God, I’d do anything to be with you Connor. So just…just hang in there, okay? For me? We can stay together. I know we can.”
“Why should I try for you? I don’t love you. Dammit Blake, I don’t care about you!” I snapped. Now I knew I was lying. But he had to know this was over. Crushing him was the only way to get it through his head. I didn’t want to hurt him, but I knew I had to. For the sake of Luka. I would do anything for Luka.
“I used you for sex, Blake. That’s all I ever cared about,” I hissed.
That was a complete lie. I had never used Blake for sex. Like I had said, I loved him. Just not the way I was in love with Luka.
“You mean nothing to me. Absolutely nothing. So leave me the hell alone. You’re pathetic and worthless. Just a good fuck.”
With those cruel words, I turned and left Blake’s bedroom. Hell, I left his house. Blake didn’t follow me. Didn’t call after me.
I got in my car and stared at the doorway for a minute, expecting him to appear and watch me with those sad eyes of his, not wanting me to leave. But, of course, the door stayed shut.
I drove myself back to Luka’s house and rang the doorbell. Luka let me in, looking a little surprised.
“Wow, that was really fast!” he said.
I nodded as I shut the door and pulled him into a hug. “I know. I told you that we just had to do the conclusion,” I said.
I kissed Luka deeply. He kissed me back, wrapping his arms around my neck. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.
Blake was out of my life, and for good. I would never go back to him. I would never cheat on Luka again. I could forget it had ever happened. Blake would finally leave me alone, and I could get on in my relationship. I would be loyal from now on.
“I love you Luka. You’re the only person I ever want,” I said honestly. “You’re the only one I’ll ever love.”
***Blake’s POV***
I stared at my bedroom door in shock, expecting Connor to come back through it and say “Just kidding!”. But he didn’t. Even when I heard his car pull out of my driveway, I just stared at my bedroom door, waiting for him to come back.
“Connor,” I choked out, pulling my knees up to my chest and wrapping my arms around them. I rested my forehead on my knees and squeezed my eyes shut tightly, his words replaying in my head.
Had that really just happened? Had Connor been drunk?
No…No, he had been sober. But why he had ended our relationship like this? So abruptly? Just the other day, we had made love. He had told me he loved me. So why now? Why like this?
I loved everything about Connor. His looks, his laidback personality, his humor, his charm, his honesty.
But now I hated that honesty. That coldhearted, brutal honesty.
I gulped and picked my head up, clenching my fists tightly as I sat up a little straighter. How was I only just now realizing how horrible of a person Connor was? He wasn’t honest. He was a liar. He had been lying to Luka about our relationship. So it was only natural that he had been lying to me about his feelings.
He had never really loved me. I had been just a game to him. A fuck buddy. He threw in the “I love you” phrase a bunch of times just for shits and giggles.
My whole body was starting to tremble and I ground my teeth together. I was just a way to keep him entertained. I was his excitement, while he would be all cute and sweet with Luka.
Luka.
I shook my head. No, it wasn’t right of me to be mad at Luka. Jealous of him that he had Connor’s love and affection, yes. But mad at him? No. He didn’t know Connor was cheating on him. He didn’t know Connor had just shattered my heart into a million pieces.
My eyes widened a little. I had been just a game to Connor, right?
So why couldn’t I make him a game to me?
Everything slowly fell into place in my mind. Luka didn’t know Connor was cheating, and Connor didn’t want Luka to know he was cheating. He thought I was just going to leave them alone now.
But Connor should know by now that he never got what he wanted. Oh sure, he had gotten Luka, and even gotten me. But other than that, Connor never got anything he wanted. A little glimpse into his past would tell you that.
He wasn’t going to win this game. I had the very thing he was trying to bury: The truth.
I would drive him crazy with guilt, shame, and desperation. I would torture him with the truth until he felt as helpless as I did now. I would toy with him until he came to me on his hands and knees, begging me to stop. And then I would tell Luka the truth, and crush Connor. I would shatter his heart and his world, the way he had shattered mine.
Connor Brennan, let the games begin.
