Showers and Eggs

(Y/N Scoresby P.O.V)

Lyra and I had a good rest in bed. "Feels great to be in a bed," Lyra said across to me.

"It sure does. You did a smart idea accepting his request to stick together,"

"Well...we're not exactly going to get answers alone," she said back.

"You're right. Besides...it's better than being alone," I said.

We suddenly heard a clang from down below. Then the scream of "Oww!" Will's voice.

"What'd you think he's doing there?" I asked over to Lyra.

"Dunno. Probably just trying to fix something,"

A pace of hammering echoed in our ears.

"Not again!" Aster complained diving under the pillow.

"He's done five times already," Pan complained.

"I'll go and check on him. In the meantime Lyra, you should try consulting the alethiometer," I suggested again. She looked reluctant. I sighed and came down to sit with her. She sat up. "I'm sorry that it didn't tell us what Asriel planned to do with Roger," I offered an arm. She laid her quivering head against my shoulder and I rubbed hers. "But if we're going to find answers to what we're looking for, you need to ask it. It's the only way we'll figure out what to do,"

She nodded. I smiled a bit. "I'll be back in a bit," I stood up and walked down the stairs to the second level. I walked across the room into a side door and I saw Will at the far end next to large tank. He had a hammer with him and he was banging against it. He heard me approaching.

"Would you quit that hammering?" I asked kindly. "Lyra and I are trying to think,"

"Sorry. I'm trying to fix this shower," he said.

"Shower?" I questioned.

He stared at me blankly. He stood up. "You don't know what a shower is?"

Awkwardly I shook my head.

"You don't wash?"

"Yes. At a sink or in a bath," I answered. "Is it another way of washing?"

"They're just like baths but standing up,"

I seemed to get the answer.

"Anyways I'm having trouble getting it to work. I can't quite adjust the pluming,"

"Let me try," I offered.

He looked at me curiously, questionably.

"I'm the daughter of an aeronaut. I know everything about tools and fixing things,"

Will pulled out a box of tools from a cupboard and I got to work. Using a pipe wrench, I altered some pipes until they were probably in place and with a screwdriver and nails I screwed them together.

"And there," I stepped out from under the tanks.

Will pulled the handle that was supposed to make the strange sprout thing above the shower square shoot water. Nothing happen. "Mmm" I rubbed my lip. "Probably just needs a little kick,"

"I don't think..." Will tried to speak but I kicked the tank. Water flushed out the top right onto his head. He screamed and shuffled back. I burst out chuckling. "There you go,"

He glared at me. "You did that on purpose,"

"It was just a joke," I answered. I paused my moment of fun just for a sec. "You have just jokes in your world right?"

"Yeah. Of course we do," he answered.

"Well tell us one," Aster insisted from on my shoulder.

Will stared at us. I just crossed my arms and shrugged my shoulders.

"Okay," he cleared his throat and pressed and rubbed his hands together. "What do you call a three humped camel?"

I stared at him.

"You don't have camels in your world?"

"Yeah. I've just never seen one up close before. So I am supposed to guess this joke?"

"No. You're supposed to ask me what do you call a three humped camel. Let's do it again. What do you call a three humped camel?" he gestured at me to ask the question.

"I don't know what do you call a three humped camel?" I asked back.

"Pregnant," Will suddenly burst out laughing. I didn't laugh at all. He stared at me. "You don't the joke?"

Awkwardly I shook my head again with a nervous smile.

"Well...camels have humps right? You get that?"

I nod.

"Well...the joke is if they have third hump then that means they could be..."

"Pregnant?" I finish.

"Yes,"

At that moment I can't the joke and I burst out laughing. "That was so funny," I was laughing so much that I nearly fell to the floor in a heap of giggling. "Man Lyra would kill for a joke like that,"

"Yes. I bet she would. Okay so would you like to take the first shower or..."

"Oh no. You take it," I offered. I rubbed my hands behind me nervously. "Probably should uh leave you alone. Well see ya," I turned around to walk out the room.

"Hey (Y/N)..." Will called behind, earning my attention. "Thanks,"

"You're welcome," I walked out the room.

(Lyra P.O.V)

Wondering what had taken (Y/N) a long while, I thought about what she said about consuming the alethiometer.

"(Y/N)'s right," Pan said. "You've got to ask the alethiometer. It's the only way we'll figure out what to do,"

I heard footsteps and saw (Y/N) come in. "Sorry I took long. I had to help Will fix the shower. It's how he washes in his own world,"

"I don't think I need a bath," I answered.

"Well I'm definitely up for one after he's finished," she said. She went to some drawers. "In the meantime I'm goanna find us some new clothes. Mine stinks so much,"

"I'll help you," I stepped out of bed before Pan could convince me to consult my truth reader. We found some trousers and shirts and slippers. They would do for now. A while later, we heard Will call out that he was finished and (Y/N) zipped off for a wash.

"I think I'll make us some food," I said to Pan. I walked downstairs to the shower and got out some eggs. "I'm goanna try and make that omelette thing," I cracked some eggs. I fried them. I stewed them. I add a bit of egg shell to it. I heard footsteps coming down and I saw Will, all cleaned up and washed.

"Making food I see?"

"Thought I might make that omelette thing like you did," she said.

"You know your friend is really good at fixing things," he said. "She fixed that shower,"

"Her father's practically handy in mechanics," I said. "Why don't you go and sit down. The omelette should be finished soon,"

Will went to sit outside. A second later (Y/N) came down and she was dressed up. She looked very different from her air flying clothes.

"You look cool," I said, quite admiring her new look.

"Lyra. You've got to try the shower out. It's so amazing. So much quicker than a bath," She expressed excitedly.

"Well I'll consider it," I obliged. "I'm cooking eggs. Why don't you wait outside with will?"

"Okay,"

(Will Parry P.O.V)

I saw (Y/N) jogging outside. She sat at the table in front of me with Aster.

"You look...different. But still good," I couldn't help but admire her new look.

She bent her eyebrows and held up a smile. "It's that supposed to be a compliment?"

"Yes. But different is good. You know what? You look great," I anxiously blabbered out my thoughts before I could stop myself. "I like your hair,"

She looked at her hair and saw how curled it was a little. "Thanks. The shower was quite lovely by the way. There's so much about your world I'm interested in. You have to tell me about everything there is to know. Do you have balloons there? How do you travel?"

Before I could answer this enthusiastic girl's questions, we heard Lyra walked outside with three plates perfectly balanced along her arms.

"Thanks," (Y/N) said as she also handled out cutlery.

"Thank Will. He's the one who taught me how to. Well...at least baked a good example of it first," Lyra answered in a tone that meant she was trying to compliment me.

Looking down at the blade I saw boiled egg with egg shell pieces. I picked up one. "You seem to have added your own twist to it,"

The girls dived into their meal. They must have been starving. I gently tucked into mine, being careful not to eat the egg shell pieces.

After our meal, we decided to have a walk around together. We walked up the narrow pathway to the tower with carved angels around. When (Y/N) was glancing at the carved angels, I couldn't help but noticed she was twiddling with a strange pendent around her neck.

Aster and Pan turned into birds to scout the area. Pan called out: "Hey! Look over there!" and we saw a man that was still and silent like stone. When Lyra went to touch, he slowly reacted. When he turned, we saw emotionless eyes and a pale face. He must have been a victim of these spectres that the boy (M/c) was talking about.

"Seems like (M/C) was right," Lyra said.

"We should be safe," (F/C) said taking her hand.

"Until we're old enough. He said I was close to the change," I spoke up. "I'm really starting to think (M/C) was right that we shouldn't stay in this place. But the truth is neither of us can leave can we?"

"You're right Will. This is only place for us to go," Lyra said.

Just then we heard ear-piercing shouts and an animal was screeching. It sounded like...meows! "Those screams aren't human!" Quickly I jogged off around the corner, pursued by Lyra and (Y/N) and their daemons chasing up me. In front of a house we saw children threatening a cat.

"Hey!" I shouted. They all turned to me. "Stop!" pushing through the mob of bullies I picked up a poor calico cat with a battered ear. "What would you hurt this cat for?!"

"Who are you?" a scary girl with dark hairs that matched her plaited hair demanded. "You are from Cittagatze,"

I tried to make a break for it but a girl next to her with a bandanna tied around her blonde hair threatened me with a mop stick. "Get out of my way!"

"Maybe we won't get out of your way," the blonde girl threatened.

"Then I'll make you!" I threatened back.

The two girls and their friends drew a little close on me. Too close. I suddenly became scared. My courage melted.

The children suddenly jumped when they heard growling and roaring from behind them. There was a wolverine and a tiger cub snarling their sharp teeth at them. Lyra and (Y/N) stood behind them.

"I suggest you get lost," (Y/N) crossed her arms.

The children didn't move.

"You heard what she said," Lyra crossed her arms too. "Get lost!"

The wolverine and tiger cub, obviously Pan and Aster in a different form growled again and the children scurried off in different directions. I walked to them, cradling the poor cat.

"Are you okay?" (Y/N) asked me.

"Yeah," I breathed. "Thanks,"

"Poor kitty," (Y/N) reached forward to stroke the poor battered cat in my arms.

"Good job at staying hidden you two!" Lyra berated Pan and Aster.

"You needed our help," Pan answered back.

"I didn't you two come up with any better ideas," announced Aster glaring at (Y/N).

"Well done you two," she complimented him and Pan. "Let's take this cat back and treat him well,"

Before we could move away, we heard more shouts and banging and thuds coming from down the street. And a voice that sounded like...

"(Y/N)," said Lyra.

"Please don't tell me we're goanna do what we don't need to do," Pan moaned.

We walked off.

Another chapter done. Please tell me what you all thought. I really would like to hear your opinions. It would be most helpful.
