A Journey up the Mountains
(Y/N P.O.V:
"(Y/N)"," It was Lyra. "I think she's waking up,". My eyes flickered. I saw four heads. Lyra, Will, (M/C) and Serafina Pekala. "You're okay," Lyra's hand slipped under my head. "Try and sit up. It's okay,". My entire body ached as she and the boys helped me sit up. I could feel Aster beside him; his arctic fox fur was soft.
But Serafina's face was the one I met. "Easy (Y/N)," she ushered gently. "You went through quite an ordeal last night,"
I suddenly felt my stomach twisting inside out. "I was flying," I remembered my wings. But I couldn't feel them. "My wings are gone!"
"Not gone. They have just disappeared," the witch said gently. "They woke up from such a long rest. And now they will appear to you when you need them most,". I was speechless. "I know you have many questions but for now we must keep moving," she said gently.
Lyra and Will helped me onto my feet. We gently made our way through the woods, climbing up some hills further away from the city. We walked for an hour. We were safe for now. Will sat down...his hand still bandaged. He winced as he sat down. "How's your hand?" (M/C) asked.
"Not any better. You did everything you could,"
"Let me see the wound," Serafina knelt before him. He wouldn't let her touch it. "Please. It will get worse if you don't let me look,"
"You can trust her Will," Lyra promised. Will reluctantly held it out and the witch queen unravelled the bindings. I felt sick. His hand looked half-rotten with disfigured skin.
"Was it your knife that made it?" Will wouldn't answer.
"Show them," I encouraged. He didn't want you. "You can trust her. She's only trying to help," Will handed her the knife and she glimpsed at it with fascination.
"What does this edge cut?"
Will and I both spoke together. He said "Nothing,". I said the right answer. "Everything,". Serafina handed him back the sheathed knife and took another look.
"Is it bad?" (M/C) asked worriedly.
"He's not poisoned," We were delighted to hear that. "But this isn't a normal wound. And it is going to take more than plants," she addressed the other two witches. "We need to gather lichens,"

(Third P.O.V)
Lee, Jopari, their daemons and Iera had flown far and wide in the balloon. But now they were soaring over the North. The Pansebjorne longed to be reunited with her mate Iorek but the safety of the girls had to come first. She gazed down below. So much ice had melted forming rivers and exploding more earth and rock that used to be buried under layers of snow. "The seals have depleted. My people are starving. Another thing Asriel failed to consider when he opened that door,"
"We're close," Lee stared out and saw a bright beacon of light in the distance. "There's the doorway. And now we can go through. And find the girls. And then I promise you Iera, I will get you back to Iorek,".
"With little food here with too much-melted ice, he will have taken the bears further east," she said. "Nevertheless I am going to help you find the girls Lee,".
"Thank you Iera," Lee said gratefully.
"You're certain this balloon can fly through it?" Jopari asked.
"Just make yourself comfortable, Mr Jopari," Lee said to him.
"Brace yourselves, gentleman!" Iera warned. "We're going in!".
The wind blew in their hair and fur and they scrunched their eyes, afraid they would be blinded by the burning light. Flash!

(M/C P.O.V):
I stared at the witch called Serafina Pekala as she picked at the flora. Will and (Y/N) were with the others. Will remained silent with his wounded hand and (Y/N) had been very quiet. The only thing keeping me from bored was observing this amazing woman from Lyra's world. "How are you finding her?" Lyra asked.
I whispered back to her. "I thought witches wore black with black top hats and flew on brooms,". I whispered back to her.
My childhood imagination made Lyra laugh. Even Pan was amused. "I can sense you staring at me," the witch spoke. I held my breath. "I'm not offended in any way. I believe the term 'witch' is understood very differently in other worlds,".
"I've always wanted to meet a witch," Lyra said. "Asriel once gave me a book about witches,".
"Did it have pictures in it?" I asked.
"I did. All the witches in it had raven hair,".
"I find those books irritating," Serafina criticised. "Asriel knows exactly what a woman looks like. Don't touch that flower Lyra,".
I twitched my head and saw that Lyra was about to touch a yellow stigma. "Very clever," I complimented the witch.
"Thank you. What is your name, young boy?".
"(M/C),".
"(M/C)? Mmm? A handsome name,".
"Thank you,". I became curious all of a sudden. I felt desperate to learn all I could about this woman who saved us. "What else can you do, Miss Pekala apart from fly?".
"She can kill pretty easily. You should have seen her at Bolvanger," Lyra smiled. "She killed dozens of soldiers in a blur,".
"Wow!" I breathed.
"The cold also doesn't affect them. And they can eat whispers in the wind,".
"Amazing," I breathed. "Are we safe, Miss Pekala?" I asked the witch again. "Will our friend be alright?"
"Will's wound is deep,".
"But he's gonna get better right?" Lyra asked, trying to hold onto hope.
"We will do what we can here but we must travel to our lands," Serafina informed.
"But our dads are on their way here," (Y/N) came walking over. "Lyra checked the Alethiometer and my father and Will's father are heading towards us. We need to reunite Will with his father. He went missing from his world for 12 years,".
"The flora is more powerful in our world," Serafina informed. "And I pledged to keep you safe Lyra. There are many places I can hide you and (Y/N). It's what your father would have wanted. We leave for our world soon,".
A while later, the witches left to find water and the four decided we needed to talk. "We can't leave this world. We need to wait for our dads," Will desperate.
"Will, I can see the way you're hiding your hand," (Y/N) said seriously. "I know it's bleeding,".
"Only a little,"
"Will, your hand could get worse," I said solemnly. "I did everything I could but it wasn't enough,".
"It was enough (M/C). I can go on. Lyra, ask the Alethiometer what we should do. Should we wait here or go to you and (Y/N)'s world?"
Lyra walked over and pulled out her truth-reading device. She got to work, setting the symbols up. I closed my eyes feeling the dust working its magic to answer her question. "It says Lee and John Parry are close with Iera,".
"What?" Will breathed.
"They're here already?!" (Y/N) was overjoyed with excitement.
"They're in this world. They went through the gateway not too long ago,".
"Then we stay here then," I decided. "We find your dads and figure out what to do from there,".

(Third Point of View):
The two men, their daemons and the talking polar bear stared out from their balloon, eying mountains and mounds and a grey sky. "So this is a new world," Lee said, not sure whether to feel amazed or nervous.
Jopari picked up a feather that had blown off his daemon. "New to those not born in it - as old as yours or mine otherwise,".
"Asriel's actions have shaken everything up," Iera said.
"They did indeed Iera,".
"What else lies within this world?".
"Beyond that headland is a city once powerful and wealthy. That's where we're heading. The knife bearer may be there. Once great, the city has fallen on hard times,".
"In another life, I'd be looking for what I could scavenge," Lee said. "My wife used to talk about a world where there was a city called Citagatze. She said there was a tower surrounded by angels,".
"The Torre Degli Angeli," Jopari informed. "In another life, neither of us would be here at all,".
"In another life, my wife would still be alive if I had been with her," Lee lamented. "You have a strange way about you Mr Jopari. They say things about shamans,".
"Like what?".
"That they have powers. That they can fly,".
"And yet you cannot," Iera finished giving the shaman a strange look.
"Oh, but I am flying. I summoned you, Mr. Scoresby. And look where I am. Here I am - flying. I'm human but I've learnt a few things along the way. I've spent time with witches, academicians, and spirits. I've found folly everywhere,".
"And this journey, is it folly or wisdom?" Iera asked.
"I don't know," Jopari stood up and inhaled the fresh sky air.
"So we find the bearer of the Subtle Knife and what then?" Lee asked.
"We tell him what his task is,".
"And the task will include protecting the girls?" Iera reminded.
"It will protect all of us," Jopari announced.

(Y/N) P.O.V
I had been very quiet as we walked. I couldn't feel my feet much anymore and I still felt my wings even though they were invisible. Loud wincing rang my eardrums. "(Y/N)!" alerted Aster. I turned and I saw Will learning against the rocks. "That's it, we're stopping,".
"No, we're not," Will was as stubborn as a mule. "We have to keep going,".
"There's no point getting you to your father if you're half dead,".
"She's right Will. We need to fix your hand," Lyra agreed.
"No, Lyra. Ask the Alethiometer. Ask it how close we are to my dad,".
"Will, you're being ridiculous," (M/C) spoke up. "Just sit down and rest,".
"Don't use me as an excuse to stop!" Will lashed out. We froze. He sighed. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I know you three wouldn't do that. I just don't want you to worry about me,".
"We should worry about you Will," (Y/N) walked over and touched his good hand. "We're your friends. That's what friends do,".
"They take care of each other," (M/N) said kindly.
"Your apology is accepted," Lyra said. "It'll be getting dark soon. We need to stop off soon anyway. We all need to rest," she nodded at Serafina. We sat against the wall, exhausted from our long walk. Roger sat between me and Lyra and trumpeted with his trunk. He sounded like a mouse. We laughed. Leo however was quite scared and stayed safe inside my knapsack.
(Third Point of View):
It had turned dark. The curtains were around the carriage and the lamps were lit. Iera was lying down, her body half-covering up the space. "It amazes me you can fit in a polar bear," Jopari said.
"This balloon carried two bears," Lee remembered how heavier it felt having Iorek inside as well. "It felt so stuffy,".
"Hey," Iera growled.
"No offence," Hester calmed her down.
Sadness and hope warred on Jopari's face. "I'm thinking about my wife and son. I feel closer to him here. I haven't been back to this world since I left my own,".
"I'm so sorry," Iera comforted.
"I didn't even see Sayor Kator," Jopari affectionately eyed his daemon. "You don't see your daemon in my world. I'd given up hope of finding a window and getting back to them,".
"You mustn't," the bear's kind eyes gazed into his remorseful irises. "When my mate was banished, for a long moment I gave up hope of ever seeing him again. But that all changed when I met Lee's daughter. You are going to see your son and then you will be able to return home to your world and your wife,".
"Thank you," Jopari was touched by her hope-giving words.
"I'll make some coffee," Lee searched through his supplies and found a little stove.
"Thank you,". Jopari watched Lee failing to light it. "Here," a box of matches popped into his hand. He handed it to Lee and spark!
.....................................................................................................................
The witches and the children had made camp that night in the forest by the small canyons. Will was lying down and (Y/N) was beside him, rubbing a cloth on his head whilst Roger stroked his bad hand with his trunk. Serafina meanwhile talked with Lyra and (M/N) near the fire.
"The knife that Will carries, the way it's cut him - it's no ordinary cut," Serafina's worries made their skin quiver like ice. "It scares me, how he got a weapon this powerful,".
"It's a very long story," (M/N) said. "But it chose Will. And he's not dangerous. We don't need protection from him. We need him to protect us,".
"(M/N) isn't from this world," Lyra informed.
"I know he is not," Serafina reached her fingers towards (M/C) but he stumbled back. "Don't be afraid. I just want to see what I can sense inside you,".
Lyra's encouraging smiles gave (M/C) the courage again. He closed his eyes, surrendering to the gentle touch of the witch's fingers. Her eyes closed too. She breathed heavily, with Lyra watching them both. "I am sensing powerful energy inside you (M/C),".
"(M/C) can sense Dust," Lyra explained. "He can feel it when it gives me an answer every time I use the Alethioeter. It told us we have to find Will's father and that we need to help (M/C) return to his home world,".
Serafina pulled her fingers back allowing (M/C) to breathe again. "I know we're just kids Serafina but if it's what Lyra's truth-telling device told us this is the path we must follow, then we have to,".
"Then we will protect you, all of you," the witch queen declared. "We will help you both get to Will's father and Lee and then return you to your world (M/C). Did the Alethiometer tell you which world he is from Lyra?".
"I did. But it didn't give me an answer. It's like we have to wait until the right moment," Lyra wasn't sure with her words but (M/C) trusted her nevertheless.
"We stop Will's bleeding first," Seraphina walked over to (Y/N) and she stood up and walked over to her other friends. Roger walked over to them and they walked up to a higher rock platform whilst the witches smashed plants and gathered around Will. They whispered words of magic into the air and all seemed silent. The three feared for Will. (Y/N) turned away and sat down, staring up at the stars. Lyra and (M/C) could clearly see how guilty she and Aster felt for Will being in that condition.
"It wasn't your fault you know," (M/C) comforted.
"It doesn't feel like it,".
"At least you didn't bring him deliberately to Tulio," Lyra lamented. "Not like how I brought Roger to Asriel,".
"Don't you start that again," warned (M/C). "You weren't to know what would happen either. Will is going to be alright. Serafina said so herself. How do we find Lee and John Parry, Lyra?".
Lyra read her Alethiometer again. "Up. We have to keep going up the mountain tomorrow,".
"What am I going to say to my dad?" (Y/N) wondered out loud. "How's he going to react when he sees me like this? Of if he sees my wings?".
"I think your wings are beautiful," Lyra complimented.
"So do I," (M/C) comforted. "When you talk with him about your mother, all will be well. I know he kept the truth from you but maybe he was just trying to protect you. Can you still feel them?".
"Yes. But I don't even know how to activate them again. I guess they just came out when I needed them,".
"Children..." Serafina called them again. "We have done all we can for Will. Now you must all sleep. Stay close together, it'll be cold,".
They came down and (Y/N) slept beside Will, Aster curled into a ball in his Arctic Fox form beside him, Lyra slept beside her with Pan in his ermine form curled up and (M/C) slept next to her clutching onto Leo. Roger went to Will's other side. They fell asleep but Serafina watched as silver wings sprouted out of (Y/N)'s back as she slept on her stomach. They covered herself and her friends like a big warm blanket. She smiled.
