Chapter 2- Heron

Moonreader had her snout buried in a scroll about matchmaking when a MudWing walked in.

She got up to help her.

"How may I help you?"

The MudWing tapped her talons noisily.

"SkyWing succession, please."

Ooh, this one's strange.

Butt out, Moonreader told her sister.

Just stating the facts. And either way, we don't have SkyWing succession books.

Moonreader mused quietly over the MudWing's futures.

There was one with a large SeaWing, but oddly female. Moonreader pondered this then moved on.

Another great portion of her futures had a giant, stony dragon that was not like any tribe she had seen before.

"I'm, excuse me- Can I find scrolls on the SkyWing succession?" The MudWing said again.

"Oh-uh, yes, well, the closest thing we have is a lineage of SkyWing princes since the Scorching."

The MudWing nodded

"That's fine. Where-?"

"Row 9, shelf 3. And my name is Moonreader,  if you need anything."

"Okay, thank you. I'm Heron."

Heron turned towards the rows of shelves.

Moonreader watched the cave entrance.

Obviously the best future for her is going to be with the SeaWing.

Mother?

Greatwatcher's mental voice pounded through Moonreader's head, along with their mother Firefly's.

You two need to quiet down with all your matchmaking. I can hardly focus on the scavenger club request.

Apologies, mother.

Firefly turned to stare Moonreader in the eye. The dusty scales by her eyes shimmered.

Moonreader yelped as Greatwatcher's talons came down hard on her tail.

You giant featherbrain! Watch where your talons are going, if you're so great at it.

Shut up, the SeaWing comes in 5.. 4... 3... 2..

Moonreader whipped around as a big aquamarine dragon entered the library, flanked by two other SeaWings. They were silent, but light-up patterns flickered on their scales, entire conversations that were silent.

They all settled down in a corner, but the biggest came up to Moonreader.

"Hey, Conch." Moonreader said calmly. The SeaWing sat down quietly, but her tail was alight with comments to the other blue dragons.

"Hey! Where can I find a scroll on SeaWing royalty?" She asked quietly.

"Row 9, shelf 1, dearest." Firefly said, stepping in on their conversation. "I know you'll find something you like there."

Greatwatcher hissed and turned around. Moonreader showed extreme self-control by not falling over and dying of embarrassment.

Conch cocked her head at the twin NightWings, then turned away.

Moonreader observed her little light-up discussion with her friends. The two other SeaWings, both female, giggled and flashed their scales back. Conch the SeaWing grinned.

Heron had found a scroll on the SkyWings, and oddly was standing in front of the shelf, snout buried in it.

Conch swept her tail past and busied herself browsing stories.

Heron looked up to notice the aquamarine princess.

"Oh, hey Conch."

"Um, hi."

"I-I just was thinking that I had something to give you."

Moonreader caught a flash of thought that ran through Conch's mind.

Really? For me? How sweet-what does she want?

Meanwhile Heron was fishing around in her library pouch. She pulled something out, flashing with blues and purples.

"I-I'm making these for everyone." She said sweetly. Then, a tinge of red flushing her face, she hurried away.

Conch observed the statuette for a minute, turning it over in her talons.

Moonreader leaned closer. Well, figuratively and literally. Peering into Conch's mind, she saw a statue of the dragon, carved down to the perfect detail. As she looked closer, though, it seemed to be studded with sapphires and turquoise, the underbelly with whorls of amethyst, and the eyes bright little emeralds.

Moonreader smiled a tiny bit. Although it was true that the MudWing was making them for everyone, she knew the amount of excruciating detail that Heron had put into the figurine.

Conch pried open the drawstrings of her pouch and gently put the statuette in. Tightly pulling it close, she dropped the pouch around her neck and joined her friends. Silent chat flickered on the first two, but Conch had gone oddly quiet.

Gazing into a soon future, Moonreader saw Conch sitting in a cave, reading the scroll while toying with the figurine.

Greatwatcher thwacked her tail into her twin.

By all of Pyrrhia, your eyes look like the moons you were reading just ate them.

Shut up, featherbrain.
